A strong Secondary 3 vocabulary is not a collection of impressive words stored for a test. Why these are useful Grade 9 and Secondary 3 vocabulary words

Searches for “9th grade vocabulary words”, “Grade 9 vocabulary”, “academic vocabulary words”, “advanced vocabulary words” and “vocabulary words with meanings and examples” often lead to lists. Lists are useful because they reduce the search space. They are not enough because a student can recognise a definition and still fail to use the word in a real answer. How to learn this Top 100 list without memorising it badly

Do not begin by trying to memorise all 100 words in alphabetical order. Alphabetical order is useful for reference but weak for building meaning. Learn the list in ten functional clusters. Each cluster contains words that solve related language problems. When words are learned as a network, one word can cue another and the differences between them become easier to see.

A practical learning cycle is notice → define → contrast → collocate → use → retrieve → transfer. Notice the word in a real text. Define it in plain language. Contrast it with a nearby word. Learn two or three natural combinations. Use it in a sentence. Retrieve it later without looking. Finally, transfer it to a different subject or situation. If a learner can only repeat the definition, the word is still fragile. If the learner can select it under pressure and reject a tempting near-synonym, the word is becoming active.

Cluster 1: Thinking and reasoning vocabulary

Secondary 3 reading and writing demand more than remembering information. Students are asked to break ideas apart, connect them, judge them and explain how they know. 1. Analyze

2. Interpret

Interpret means to explain the meaning or significance of information, language, behaviour or evidence. A student can interpret a graph, a metaphor, a historical source or a character’s reaction. Interpretation goes beyond description: “the line rises” describes a graph; “the rise suggests demand increased after the policy change” interprets it. The word is useful when evidence does not speak for itself and must be connected to a defensible meaning. Common combinations include interpret results, interpret evidence and interpret a passage. Retrieval cue: “What does this information mean here?”

3. Evaluate

Evaluate means to judge quality, value, strength or effectiveness using relevant criteria. It is not simply to give an opinion. A student who evaluates an argument asks whether the evidence is relevant, sufficient and credible. A student who evaluates a solution considers benefits, limitations and trade-offs. Common collocations include evaluate effectiveness, evaluate evidence, evaluate a source and evaluate a strategy. Leonie’s useful question is: “By what standard am I judging this?” Without a criterion, evaluation easily collapses into preference. Word family: evaluation, evaluative.

4. Infer

Infer means to reach a conclusion from clues or evidence that do not state the conclusion directly. In reading, students infer attitude from word choice or infer motive from action. In Science, they may infer a process from observed results. The noun is inference. A frequent error is to treat inference as guessing. A good inference is constrained by evidence: several interpretations may be imaginable, but only some are supported. Iona’s test is simple: “Which detail permits this conclusion?” If no detail can be identified, the inference is probably too loose.

5. Justify

Justify means to give adequate reasons or evidence for a choice, claim, method or conclusion. In an answer, “I chose this” is a decision; “I chose this because…” begins a justification. Strong justification connects the reason directly to the decision rather than adding unrelated information. Common combinations include justify a claim, justify a choice, justify a conclusion and justify the method. Maren uses a two-part check: state the decision, then show why the evidence makes that decision reasonable. Word family: justification, justified, justifiable.

6. Synthesize

Synthesize means to combine information or ideas from several sources into a new, coherent understanding. It is not merely summarising sources one after another. A synthesis shows relationships: agreement, tension, cause, hierarchy, chronology or a larger pattern. A student may synthesize two articles and a graph to explain a social issue. A science student may synthesize observations from several trials. Common collocations include synthesize information, synthesize findings and synthesize sources. Retrieval cue: “What new whole can I build from these separate pieces?”

7. Distinguish

Distinguish means to recognise and explain an important difference between things that may appear similar. Academic learning often depends on distinction: fact versus inference, correlation versus causation, fairness versus equality, description versus explanation. “Different” names separation; distinguish requires the student to identify the dimension on which the difference matters. Useful patterns include distinguish A from B and distinguish between A and B. Iona’s question is: “What boundary prevents these two ideas from being interchangeable?” That boundary is often the heart of the learning objective.

8. Compare

Compare means to examine two or more things in relation to one another, often to identify similarities as well as differences. In everyday speech, “compare” is sometimes treated as “find similarities”, but academic comparison is broader. A strong comparison uses shared dimensions: cost, speed, reliability, motive, tone, structure or outcome. “Both are different” is not enough. Maren might compare two introductions by looking at clarity, scope and reader expectation. Common combinations include compare methods, compare outcomes and compare perspectives. Retrieval cue: “Use the same measuring dimensions for both.”

9. Contrast

Contrast means to highlight differences, especially differences that reveal something important. Compare and contrast often appear together because comparison establishes a common frame while contrast sharpens separation. A useful contrast is selective. It does not list every difference; it chooses differences relevant to the question. Common collocations include contrast approaches, contrast viewpoints and in contrast to. Iona may contrast two speakers’ attitudes by tracing diction, certainty and evidence. Leonie’s exam cue is: “Name the shared dimension first, then state the difference on that dimension.”

10. Clarify

Clarify means to make meaning clearer by removing uncertainty, vagueness or confusion. Good clarification can define a term, add a boundary, give an example, restate an idea more precisely or explain a relationship. It should not simply repeat the same unclear sentence with more words. Common patterns include clarify the distinction, clarify the meaning, clarify the scope and clarify a misunderstanding. Maren’s editing question is: “What exactly could a careful reader misunderstand here?” The answer points to what needs clarification rather than expansion for its own sake.

Cluster 2: Argument architecture vocabulary

Arguments are easier to understand when students can name their parts. These ten words allow a reader to see the structure behind persuasive language. They are useful in comprehension, argumentative writing, source work, discussion and everyday decision-making. 11. Evidence

Evidence is information used to support, test or challenge a claim. Evidence can include observations, measurements, examples, documents, testimony or data, depending on the subject. The key question is not only “Is there evidence?” but “What does this evidence actually support?” A vivid anecdote may be emotionally powerful but weak for a broad statistical claim. Common collocations include strong evidence, empirical evidence, supporting evidence and evidence suggests. 12. Claim

A claim is a statement presented as true or defensible and therefore open to support, qualification or challenge. The stronger the claim, the stronger the evidence normally required. Common combinations include make a claim, support a claim, challenge a claim and qualify a claim. 13. Premise

A premise is a proposition used as a starting point in reasoning. In a simple argument, premises support a conclusion. “All metals expand when heated” and “this rod is metal” function as premises before a conclusion about the rod. In essays, premises may be less formal but still present: a writer may assume that fairness requires equal opportunity before arguing about policy. Common combinations include basic premise, underlying premise and premise of the argument. Iona looks for premises because conclusions can sound persuasive even when their foundations are weak.

14. Assumption

An assumption is something accepted as true for the purpose of reasoning without being fully established within that reasoning. Assumptions are not automatically bad; every model and argument needs starting conditions. Problems arise when hidden assumptions are doubtful or when conclusions extend beyond them. Common combinations include reasonable assumption, implicit assumption, challenge an assumption and based on the assumption that. Leonie learns to ask one useful question: “What must be true for this argument to work?” That question often reveals the assumption.

15. Inference

An inference is a conclusion reached from evidence and reasoning rather than stated directly. It is the noun related to infer. Good academic writing makes the inferential step visible instead of jumping from evidence to conclusion. For example, “attendance increased after the new timetable” is an observation; “the timetable improved access” is an inference that may need additional evidence. Common combinations include reasonable inference, draw an inference and inferential step. Iona checks whether the distance between evidence and inference is small enough to defend.

16. Implication

An implication is a consequence, meaning or conclusion that follows from something, even when it is not stated directly. In reading, a sentence can imply an attitude. In policy, a decision can have financial implications. In an argument, accepting one premise may carry implications for another issue. Common collocations include practical implications, ethical implications, implications for and the implication is that. Maren uses the word when she wants to move from “what happened” to “why it matters” without pretending that every implication is inevitable.

17. Conclusion

A conclusion is the judgement or proposition reached after reasoning from evidence, premises or observations. In school writing, “conclusion” also names the final section of an essay, but the reasoning meaning is more fundamental. A strong conclusion is proportional to the evidence. Limited evidence may justify a tentative conclusion rather than a universal one. Common combinations include reach a conclusion, draw a conclusion, tentative conclusion and support the conclusion. Leonie checks whether the final claim says more than the preceding evidence allows.

18. Criterion

A criterion is a standard used for judgement or decision-making. The plural is criteria. If students are asked to evaluate a solution, they need criteria such as cost, fairness, effectiveness, safety or sustainability. Without criteria, evaluation becomes a sequence of unstructured opinions. Common combinations include selection criterion, evaluation criteria, meet a criterion and judge by the criterion of. Maren’s useful sentence frame is: “Using ___ as the criterion, option A is stronger because…” This keeps the judgement anchored.

19. Validity

Validity concerns whether a conclusion, measurement, test or method is appropriate for what it claims to establish. The exact meaning varies by field, but the core idea is fitness between the method and the claim. A survey about screen time is not valid evidence for sleep quality if it never measures sleep. Common combinations include valid conclusion, valid measure, validity of the argument and question the validity. Students should not use “valid” merely as a sophisticated replacement for “good”. The word asks: valid for what purpose?

20. Reliability

Reliability concerns consistency or dependability. A measurement procedure is reliable if repeated use under similar conditions produces stable results. A source may be described as reliable when it has a dependable record, transparent methods and appropriate expertise, although source evaluation also requires relevance and possible bias. Reliability and validity are not identical: a broken scale can give the same wrong reading repeatedly, making it consistent but invalid. Common combinations include reliable source, reliable measure and assess reliability. Iona learns to ask both questions separately.

Cluster 3: Judgement and evidence quality vocabulary

These words help students calibrate claims instead of treating information as simply true or false. Mature academic language often depends on degree: how strong is the evidence, how certain is the conclusion, how relevant is the detail, and how coherent is the explanation?

21. Empirical

Empirical means based on observation, measurement or experience rather than pure speculation or theory alone. Common collocations include empirical evidence, empirical study and empirical data. The word is especially useful in Science and social research, but it can also sharpen everyday reasoning: a belief may sound plausible yet lack empirical support. Empirical does not mean “certain”; observations can be incomplete or badly measured. It describes where the evidence comes from. Iona’s cue is: “Was this actually observed or measured?”

22. Objective

Objective can mean based on publicly checkable criteria rather than personal preference, or it can mean a goal. In this list, the first sense matters most. An objective judgement tries to reduce the influence of individual bias by using evidence and explicit standards. Objective does not mean free from every human choice; methods and categories still need scrutiny. Common combinations include objective evidence, objective assessment and objective criteria. Maren avoids using “objective” as a synonym for “obviously correct”. The stronger idea is “checkable by others using shared standards.”

23. Subjective

Subjective means shaped by personal experience, interpretation, preference or perspective. A response to a poem may contain subjective elements; pain is experienced subjectively; aesthetic judgement can be subjective even when people give reasons. Subjective does not mean worthless or irrational. It identifies a type of knowledge that depends partly on the experiencing person. Common combinations include subjective judgement, subjective experience and subjective interpretation. Iona’s distinction is useful: “Can another observer independently check this, or does the report depend on the person’s own experience?”

24. Plausible

Plausible means apparently reasonable or believable given what is currently known. A plausible explanation deserves consideration, but it is not automatically proven. This boundary matters because students often jump from “I can imagine this” to “this must be true”. Common combinations include plausible explanation, plausible account and plausible hypothesis. Maren can use the word to keep a claim proportionate: “One plausible explanation is…” signals that alternatives remain possible. Retrieval cue: “Does this fit the evidence well enough to be taken seriously?”

25. Probable

Probable means more likely than not, or having a relatively high likelihood. It is stronger than possible and different from certain. Students should learn to calibrate these words because they communicate confidence. “It is possible that the policy mattered” permits a wide range of likelihood; “it is probable” makes a stronger commitment. Common combinations include probable cause, probable outcome and highly probable. Iona asks: “What evidence justifies moving from possible to probable?” That question makes certainty language accountable.

26. Significant

Significant can mean important, meaningful or—within statistics—unlikely to be explained by a specified chance model. Students should not collapse these meanings. A statistically significant result may have a small practical effect, while a practically important change may require more data before statistical significance is established. In general writing, use significant when importance can be explained, not simply as an inflated synonym for “big”. Common collocations include significant difference, significant factor and significant impact. Maren follows the word with the reason the significance matters.

27. Relevant

Relevant means directly connected to the question, purpose or decision at hand. Relevance is one of the highest-value examination concepts because students often know true information that does not answer the actual question. A detail can be accurate and interesting yet irrelevant. Common combinations include relevant evidence, relevant example, relevant factor and directly relevant. Leonie’s time-saving cue is: “If I remove this sentence, does my answer become less able to answer the question?” If not, the sentence may not be relevant enough.

28. Sufficient

Sufficient means enough for a particular purpose or requirement. The word always invites a hidden question: enough for what? One example may be sufficient to illustrate a possibility but insufficient to establish a general pattern. Common combinations include sufficient evidence, sufficient reason, sufficient detail and necessary and sufficient. Iona distinguishes sufficiency from relevance: evidence can be relevant but too limited in quantity or scope. Maren uses the word when evaluating whether an argument has crossed the threshold from assertion to support.

29. Consistent

Consistent means showing agreement, stability or compatibility across cases or over time. Results can be consistent with a hypothesis without proving it. A character can behave consistently with an established motive. A dataset can show a consistent pattern. Common combinations include consistent pattern, consistent results, consistent with and internally consistent. The phrase consistent with is especially useful because it avoids overclaiming: evidence that fits an explanation may also fit alternatives. Iona uses it to preserve uncertainty while still saying something informative.

30. Coherent

Coherent means logically connected and forming an understandable whole. Coherence is more than grammatical correctness. An essay can contain correct sentences yet feel incoherent if claims, evidence and paragraphs do not connect. An explanation is coherent when its parts fit without unexplained contradiction. Common combinations include coherent argument, coherent explanation, coherent structure and internally coherent. Maren’s revision test is to write the purpose of each paragraph in the margin. If the sequence does not form a sensible chain, coherence needs repair.

Cluster 4: Cause and systems vocabulary

Students regularly have to explain why something happened. Weak explanations collapse everything into “because”. Strong explanations distinguish direct causes, contributing factors, mechanisms, constraints and relationships that may not be causal. This cluster connects closely with Secondary 3 Vocabulary for Cause and Effect.

31. Cause

A cause is something that produces or helps produce an effect. In serious reasoning, causation requires more than sequence. If B follows A, A did not necessarily cause B. Students should ask about alternative explanations, mechanisms and evidence. Common combinations include direct cause, underlying cause, cause of and causal relationship. Maren avoids writing “X caused Y” when the evidence only shows that X and Y occurred together. Retrieval cue: “What evidence supports production, not merely association?”

32. Consequence

A consequence is a result or effect that follows from an action, condition or event. Consequences can be intended or unintended, immediate or delayed, beneficial or harmful. This makes the word useful in essays because it supports more precise chains than the vague word “result”. Common combinations include long-term consequence, unintended consequence and consequence of. Iona checks whether a claimed consequence is actually linked to the preceding cause. Maren can strengthen paragraphs by specifying the type and time scale of the consequence.

33. Factor

A factor is one element that contributes to a situation, outcome or decision. The word is valuable when no single cause is sufficient. Educational outcomes, health outcomes and social changes often involve multiple interacting factors. Common combinations include key factor, contributing factor, risk factor and factor influencing. “Factor” is safer than “cause” when the relationship is partial or complex. Leonie’s cue is: “Is this one component in a multi-cause system?” If yes, factor may be the more accurate word.

34. Mechanism

A mechanism is the process through which one thing brings about another. It answers the important question “How does the cause produce the effect?” Saying that sleep affects learning is a relationship; explaining how sleep supports memory consolidation begins to specify a mechanism. In social topics, mechanisms may include incentives, information flows or institutional rules. Common combinations include underlying mechanism, causal mechanism and mechanism by which. Iona treats mechanism as the bridge between correlation and explanation.

35. Influence

Influence means the capacity to affect an outcome, behaviour or development without necessarily determining it completely. It is a useful verb and noun when the evidence suggests contribution but not total causation. Family, peers, incentives and prior knowledge can influence behaviour. Common combinations include strong influence, influence on, social influence and influence behaviour. Maren chooses influence when “cause” would sound too absolute. The word supports nuanced explanation because it leaves room for multiple forces acting together.

36. Correlate

Correlate means to show a statistical or observable relationship in which two variables change together. The noun is correlation. A positive correlation means both tend to move in the same direction; a negative correlation means they tend to move in opposite directions. Correlation does not by itself establish causation because a third factor, reverse direction or coincidence may explain the relationship. Common patterns include correlate with and strongly correlated. Leonie remembers the boundary with one sentence: “Move together is not the same as make happen.”

37. Contribute

Contribute means to add to a result, process or condition as one part among others. It is one of the best verbs for avoiding exaggerated causal claims. Stress may contribute to poor sleep without being the only explanation. A design feature may contribute to efficiency without producing it alone. Common patterns include contribute to, contributing factor and make a contribution to. Maren uses it when several causes operate together. The word is especially useful in analytical essays where absolute causal language would overstate the evidence.

38. Inhibit

Inhibit means to slow, restrict or prevent a process, action or development. In Science, a substance may inhibit an enzyme. In learning, fear of error may inhibit participation. In policy, high costs may inhibit adoption. Common combinations include inhibit growth, inhibit development and inhibit a process. It is stronger and more precise than “make harder” because it names a restraining effect. Iona asks whether the factor reduces the process, blocks it entirely or merely changes it; that distinction helps choose between inhibit, prevent and constrain.

39. Facilitate

Facilitate means to make a process easier or more likely without necessarily causing the outcome by itself. Clear instructions can facilitate learning; transport links can facilitate trade; a catalyst can facilitate a reaction pathway. Common combinations include facilitate communication, facilitate access and facilitate learning. The word pairs usefully with inhibit. Maren avoids using it as a decorative synonym for “help”; it is strongest when the sentence names the process being enabled. Retrieval cue: “What friction or barrier does this reduce?”

40. Constrain

Constrain means to limit the range of possible actions, outcomes or growth. Time, money, rules, resources and physical conditions can constrain a system. A constraint does not necessarily stop an action; it narrows what is feasible. Common combinations include budget constraint, time constraint, constrain growth and constrained by. Leonie uses the word during planning because constraints are not excuses; they define the solution space. In writing, naming a constraint often makes an explanation more realistic by showing why an ideal option may not be available.

Cluster 5: Data and measurement vocabulary

Students increasingly meet tables, graphs, surveys, experiments and quantitative claims. These ten words help them describe what data show without inventing more certainty than the data contain. They are useful in Science and Mathematics, but also in Geography, Economics, media literacy and argumentative writing.

41. Trend

A trend is a general direction of change across time or ordered observations. A trend may rise, fall, remain stable or change direction. One isolated movement does not necessarily establish a trend. Common combinations include upward trend, long-term trend, trend over time and trend suggests. Iona looks for duration and consistency before naming a trend. Maren avoids writing “the trend increased”; more precise phrasing is “the value increased” or “the trend was upward”. Good data vocabulary separates the pattern from the variable displaying it.

42. Pattern

A pattern is a repeated or organised regularity in data, events, language or behaviour. Patterns can be spatial, temporal, numerical or conceptual. A reader may notice a pattern of contrast in a text; a scientist may observe a repeating pattern in measurements. Common combinations include recurring pattern, consistent pattern and pattern of change. The word is broader than trend: a pattern may repeat without moving in one overall direction. Leonie’s cue is: “What regular structure appears more than once?”

43. Variation

Variation means difference or change among observations, individuals or conditions. Variation can be meaningful information rather than error. 44. Proportion

A proportion is a comparative part of a whole, often expressed as a fraction, decimal or percentage. It allows students to compare groups of different sizes more fairly than raw counts. If one class has ten late arrivals and another has eight, the first does not necessarily have a higher proportion unless class sizes are considered. Common combinations include large proportion, proportion of and in proportion to. Leonie’s question is: “Compared with what total?” That denominator awareness prevents many misleading interpretations.

45. Magnitude

Magnitude means the size, extent or strength of something. It is useful when the direction of change is not enough. Two interventions may both improve performance, but one may have a larger magnitude of effect. In Science and Mathematics the word can have more specialised meanings, so students should follow subject-specific definitions. Common combinations include magnitude of change, greater magnitude and order of magnitude. Maren uses the word when she wants to distinguish “whether something happened” from “how much it happened.”

46. Frequency

Frequency means how often something occurs within a defined period or set. In data analysis, frequency can be a count; in waves, it has a specific scientific meaning. In language learning, word frequency describes how often a word appears in a corpus or body of language. Common combinations include high frequency, frequency of occurrence and frequency distribution. Iona always checks the frame: “How often, out of what, and over what interval?” Without that frame, frequency claims can mislead.

47. Distribution

Distribution describes how something is spread across values, places, groups or categories. A dataset can have a narrow or wide distribution; resources can be unevenly distributed; a species can have a geographic distribution. The word encourages students to look beyond averages and totals. Common combinations include distribution of scores, geographic distribution, unequal distribution and frequency distribution. Leonie asks: “Where are the values concentrated, and where are they sparse?” That question turns a list of numbers into a structural description.

48. Estimate

To estimate is to produce a reasoned approximation when exact information is unavailable, unnecessary or costly to obtain. An estimate should still be based on evidence, calculation or a defensible model. The noun is also estimate. Common combinations include rough estimate, estimate the cost, estimated value and best estimate. Maren avoids presenting an estimate as an exact figure. Leonie records the assumptions behind the estimate because changing those assumptions may change the answer. Good estimation is disciplined uncertainty, not careless guessing.

49. Approximate

Approximate means close to the exact value, amount or description but not exact. It can be an adjective or verb. “Approximately 40%” signals intentional rounding and protects the reader from false precision. Common combinations include approximate value, approximate duration and approximately equal. Approximate differs from estimate: an estimate is the act or result of judging an unknown value; an approximation emphasises closeness rather than exactness. Iona watches for numbers presented with more decimal places than the evidence can justify.

50. Quantify

Quantify means to express or measure something in numerical terms. It is useful when a vague statement can be made testable or comparable. “The intervention helped” becomes more informative when the improvement is quantified. Not everything important can be fully quantified, and numerical precision does not automatically create validity. Common combinations include quantify the effect, quantify risk and difficult to quantify. Maren uses the word carefully: the goal is not to turn every judgement into a number but to know when numerical description adds clarity.

Cluster 6: Context and society vocabulary

Many upper-secondary texts involve society, identity, media, culture and competing viewpoints. These words help students avoid simplistic explanations. They create room for context, perspective, hidden assumptions and differences in social meaning.

51. Context

Context is the surrounding situation, information or conditions that help determine meaning. The same word, action or statistic can mean different things in different contexts. Textual context includes nearby sentences; historical context includes events and institutions; social context includes norms and relationships. Common combinations include in context, historical context, social context and contextual information. Iona’s rule is: never lift a quotation away from the information that controls its meaning. Maren’s parallel rule is: give readers enough context to interpret a claim accurately.

52. Perspective

A perspective is a position or viewpoint shaped by experience, interests, assumptions and available information. Different perspectives can illuminate different parts of the same issue. Recognising perspective does not mean all claims are equally strong; evidence and reasoning still matter. Common combinations include from the perspective of, alternative perspective and broaden one’s perspective. Iona asks whose perspective is represented and whose is absent. Maren can strengthen an argument by acknowledging a credible alternative perspective before explaining why her conclusion still stands.

53. Bias

Bias is a systematic tendency that influences judgement, representation, measurement or selection. Bias can be conscious or unconscious and can enter through sampling, wording, incentives, expectations or perspective. Calling something biased should not be a shortcut for “I disagree”. The student should identify the mechanism of distortion. Common combinations include selection bias, confirmation bias, biased sample and potential source of bias. Iona’s question is: “What direction might this process push the result?” That turns accusation into analysis.

54. Nuance

Nuance is a subtle distinction or variation in meaning, attitude or degree. Nuance matters when two words are similar but not interchangeable, or when a position cannot be captured by a simple yes/no. Common combinations include subtle nuance, nuance in meaning and nuanced argument. Maren develops nuance by replacing absolute language with calibrated language where appropriate. Iona looks for qualifiers, contrasts and exceptions that prevent a text from being reduced to a slogan. Vocabulary depth is partly the ability to perceive these small but consequential differences.

55. Ambiguity

Ambiguity exists when a word, sentence, action or situation permits more than one interpretation. Ambiguity can be accidental or deliberate. In literature it may create richness; in instructions it may create error. Common combinations include lexical ambiguity, ambiguous wording, resolve ambiguity and open to interpretation. Iona asks whether the surrounding context selects one meaning. Maren checks pronouns, modifiers and vague nouns that could point in more than one direction. Strong writers do not eliminate all ambiguity; they control whether it is useful or harmful.

56. Convention

A convention is an established way of doing, expressing or organising something that a community recognises. Genres have conventions; academic writing has citation conventions; societies have social conventions. Conventions are not natural laws, but they coordinate expectations. Common combinations include social convention, literary convention, conventional approach and challenge convention. Maren asks whether a writing choice violates a convention intentionally or simply by mistake. Iona asks what expectations the convention creates for a reader. Understanding conventions makes both compliance and innovation more deliberate.

57. Ideology

An ideology is a structured set of ideas, values or beliefs about society, politics, economics or how the world should be organised. The word should be used precisely, not as an insult for “beliefs I dislike”. Ideologies influence what problems people notice and what solutions they consider legitimate. Common combinations include political ideology, ideological position and ideological assumptions. Iona looks for recurring principles and value commitments before labelling a position ideological. Maren explains the belief structure rather than relying on the label alone.

58. Identity

Identity refers to how a person or group understands and represents who they are, including social roles, affiliations, history, values and self-conception. Identity can be personal, cultural, national, professional or multiple at once. Common combinations include personal identity, cultural identity, identity formation and sense of identity. In essays, the word becomes useful when students specify which dimension of identity matters. Iona avoids treating identity as fixed or singular when the text presents it as negotiated or changing.

59. Culture

Culture is the shared practices, meanings, values, knowledge, symbols and habits through which groups make sense of life. It includes more than food, festivals and clothing. Academic discussion may examine cultural norms, language, institutions, memory and everyday practices. Common combinations include cultural context, cultural values, workplace culture and cultural change. Maren avoids broad claims such as “a culture believes…” unless evidence supports the generalisation. Iona looks for variation within groups because cultures are not perfectly uniform.

60. Norm

A norm is an expected or commonly accepted standard of behaviour within a group or system. Norms can be formalised in rules or remain informal. They influence behaviour through approval, disapproval and shared expectations. Common combinations include social norm, cultural norm, norm of reciprocity and challenge a norm. A norm describes what is expected, not necessarily what is morally right. Iona keeps descriptive and ethical questions separate: “People commonly do this” does not automatically imply “people should do this.”

Cluster 7: Ethics and responsibility vocabulary

Students increasingly discuss fairness, technology, environment, institutions and public decisions. Ethical vocabulary helps them move beyond “good” and “bad” toward questions about duties, consequences, legitimacy, fairness and responsibility. 61. Equity

Equity concerns fairness in the distribution of opportunities, resources, burdens or treatment, often with attention to different starting conditions and needs. Equity is related to but not identical with equality. Equal treatment gives the same thing; equitable treatment asks what fairness requires in context. Common combinations include educational equity, equity in access and promote equity. Maren uses the word only after specifying the fairness principle involved. Iona asks who benefits, who bears costs and whether relevant differences justify different treatment.

62. Justice

Justice refers to principles and practices of fair treatment, rights, duties and distribution. Different theories of justice may emphasise equality, need, desert, liberty or procedure. That is why simply calling something “just” does not settle an argument; the underlying principle should be stated. Common combinations include social justice, procedural justice, justice system and principle of justice. Iona asks which standard of fairness the writer is using. Maren makes that standard explicit before evaluating a policy or action.

63. Ethical

Ethical means related to principles about right action, duties, harms, rights and responsible conduct. An ethical question asks not only what is legal or effective but what ought to be done. Common combinations include ethical dilemma, ethical responsibility, ethical concern and ethical decision. Students should avoid using the word as a vague badge of approval. Maren strengthens an ethical claim by naming the principle: consent, fairness, harm, honesty or responsibility. Iona distinguishes ethical evaluation from factual description.

64. Responsibility

Responsibility is a duty, obligation or accountable role connected to an action or outcome. Responsibility can be individual, shared, professional or institutional. The word also raises questions of capacity and control: people are usually held more responsible for outcomes they could reasonably influence. Common combinations include take responsibility, shared responsibility, responsibility for and responsible decision. Leonie uses the word in planning: if a task has no clear owner, responsibility becomes diffuse. Maren uses it in argument with the question, “Responsible for what, and why?”

65. Integrity

Integrity means adherence to sound moral and professional principles, especially honesty and consistency between stated values and action. In academic work, integrity includes truthful representation of sources, independent thinking and honest reporting of results. Common combinations include academic integrity, professional integrity and act with integrity. The word is stronger than simply “being nice”. Iona treats evidence honestly even when it weakens her preferred conclusion. Maren does not hide uncertainty to make an argument look stronger. Those habits are practical forms of integrity.

66. Accountability

Accountability is the condition of being answerable for decisions, actions or results and being expected to explain or correct them. Responsibility concerns the duty itself; accountability emphasises answerability and consequences. Common combinations include public accountability, accountability mechanism, hold accountable and accountable for. Leonie uses accountability in team work by making ownership visible. In public issues, Maren asks what information and processes allow others to evaluate whether a person or institution has met its responsibilities.

67. Legitimate

Legitimate means lawful, justified, properly authorised or deserving acceptance according to relevant standards. The exact sense depends on context. A government may have legal legitimacy, a concern may be legitimate because it is reasonable, and a method may be legitimate within a discipline. Common combinations include legitimate concern, legitimate authority, legitimate purpose and legitimate question. Iona asks, “Legitimate by what rule or standard?” Maren avoids treating the word as a synonym for “real”; she explains the basis of legitimacy.

68. Equitable

Equitable means fair in a way that takes relevant differences and circumstances into account. It is the adjective related to equity. An equitable solution may not distribute identical resources if needs differ. Common combinations include equitable access, equitable distribution and equitable treatment. The word is useful in policy writing because it forces a clearer fairness test. Maren explains which differences are relevant rather than assuming any unequal treatment is inequitable. 69. Sustainable

Sustainable means capable of continuing over time without exhausting essential resources, causing unacceptable damage or depending on conditions that cannot be maintained. Environmental sustainability is one important use, but the word also applies to finance, workload, systems and habits. Common combinations include sustainable development, sustainable practice, financially sustainable and long-term sustainability. Leonie asks whether a plan works not only once but repeatedly. 70. Welfare

Welfare refers to the health, safety and overall well-being of individuals or groups. In economics and public policy it can also refer to social support systems or aggregate well-being. Common combinations include child welfare, public welfare, animal welfare and welfare policy. The word requires context because it can name a condition or a policy domain. Iona checks whether a proposal improves welfare for one group while shifting costs to another. Maren makes the relevant dimension—health, security, income or well-being—clear.

Cluster 8: Action and improvement vocabulary

Academic language should help students act, not merely describe. These words are useful for projects, problem solving, revision, design and planning. They also support the learning process itself: students adapt a strategy, monitor performance, revise a method and optimize what works.

71. Adapt

Adapt means to modify behaviour, structure or strategy in response to conditions. Adaptation is not random change; the change is connected to a demand or environment. Common combinations include adapt to change, adapt a method and adapt to new conditions. Leonie adapts a study plan when evidence shows that rereading is not producing retrieval. Maren adapts tone for a new audience while preserving the core message. Word family: adapt, adaptation, adaptable, adaptive. Retrieval cue: “What changed in the environment, and what must change in response?”

72. Resilient

Resilient means able to recover, continue functioning or adapt after difficulty, disruption or stress. In engineering and ecology the word can have technical meanings; in personal development it should not be used to deny real constraints. Resilience is not pretending that hardship has no cost. Common combinations include resilient system, resilient community and psychological resilience. Leonie treats resilience as recovery plus adjustment: after a poor test, the useful response is not motivational language alone but diagnosis, repair and another attempt.

73. Innovative

Innovative means introducing a useful new method, idea, design or application. Novelty alone is not enough; innovation normally implies practical value. Common combinations include innovative approach, innovative solution and innovative design. Maren avoids calling every unusual idea innovative. She asks whether the change solves a real problem better, cheaper, faster or more accessibly. Iona also checks whether the claimed innovation is genuinely new in the relevant context. Word family: innovate, innovation, innovative, innovator.

74. Efficient

Efficient means achieving an output with relatively little wasted time, energy, material or cost. Efficiency is not identical with effectiveness. A method can be efficient at producing the wrong outcome. Common combinations include energy-efficient, efficient process, cost-efficient and more efficient. Leonie uses the distinction: first decide whether a study method works, then ask whether it achieves the learning with reasonable time and effort. Maren uses efficiency arguments carefully because saving resources may create trade-offs elsewhere.

75. Feasible

Feasible means realistically possible within the available constraints. An idea may be desirable but not feasible because of cost, time, technology, law or resources. Common combinations include technically feasible, financially feasible, feasible option and feasibility study. Leonie likes the word because it turns planning from wishful thinking into constraint-aware design. Maren distinguishes feasibility from desirability: “Can we do it?” and “Should we do it?” are different questions. Good arguments often need both.

76. Strategy

A strategy is an organised approach for achieving an objective under particular conditions. It is broader than a single tactic. A vocabulary strategy might combine spaced retrieval, context reading and deliberate writing. Common combinations include learning strategy, long-term strategy, strategy for and strategic decision. Leonie writes the objective first because a strategy cannot be evaluated without knowing what it is meant to achieve. Maren distinguishes strategy from activity: doing more worksheets is an activity; targeting retrieval failures with timed recall is a strategy.

77. Implement

Implement means to put a plan, policy, method or decision into practice. Designing a solution and implementing it are different stages. Implementation involves resources, sequencing, ownership and monitoring. Common combinations include implement a policy, implement a strategy and implementation plan. Leonie asks who will do what, when and with which resources. In writing, Maren uses implement when the practical execution matters, not simply as a formal synonym for “do”. Word family: implementation, implementable.

78. Monitor

Monitor means to observe or measure something over time in order to detect change, performance or risk. Monitoring is not the same as a one-time check. Common combinations include monitor progress, monitor performance, monitor changes and continuous monitoring. Leonie monitors vocabulary by testing delayed recall rather than counting minutes spent studying. Iona monitors whether a source updates or corrects information. The word implies an ongoing feedback loop: observe, compare with a standard, decide whether action is needed.

79. Revise

Revise means to reconsider and improve something by changing content, structure, method or understanding. In British educational usage, it can also mean to review material before an examination. Both senses share the idea of returning to something. Maren revises writing by changing the reasoning, not merely correcting spelling. Leonie revises study plans when performance data reveal a weak method. Common combinations include revise a draft, revise a strategy and revision plan. 80. Optimize

Optimize means to make a system, process or decision as effective as possible for a defined objective and set of constraints. The word should not mean vaguely “make better”. That single question prevents many empty claims.

Cluster 9: Communication and argument vocabulary

Strong vocabulary is not the number of long words in a paragraph. It is the ability to select language that fits meaning, audience and evidence. These ten words describe high-value communication moves. They connect directly to writing, oral response and discussion. 81. Communicate

Communicate means to convey information, meaning, feeling or intention to another person or audience. Communication includes speaking and writing but also visual design, gesture and structure. Effective communication is audience-sensitive: the same idea may need different wording for a peer, a teacher or the public. Common combinations include communicate clearly, communicate an idea and communication strategy. Maren’s test is not “Did I say it?” but “Could the intended reader reconstruct the meaning I intended?” That shift makes communication a receiver problem as well as a sender problem.

82. Articulate

Articulate means to express an idea clearly and coherently in words. A student may understand something vaguely but struggle to articulate it. Common combinations include articulate a position, articulate clearly and well-articulated argument. The word emphasises the translation from thought into explicit language. Iona may understand a text but need a sentence frame to articulate the inference. Maren improves articulation by naming relationships directly: cause, contrast, condition or consequence. Word family: articulate, articulation.

83. Concise

Concise means expressing necessary meaning in relatively few words without losing important information. Concision is not simply shortness. A short sentence can be vague, while a slightly longer sentence may be more concise because every word earns its place. Common combinations include concise explanation, clear and concise and concise summary. Leonie values concision under time pressure because it reduces writing cost. Maren achieves it by removing repetition, empty openings and words that do not change the meaning. Word family: concise, concisely, concision.

84. Precise

Precise means exact enough for the purpose, with clear boundaries and minimal unnecessary ambiguity. Precision can involve choosing the right noun, stating a quantity, limiting a claim or identifying a mechanism. Common combinations include precise language, precise measurement, precise definition and more precisely. Maren replaces “things got better” with the specific variable that changed. Iona checks whether a precise-looking number is actually justified by measurement. Precision is not decoration; it is the discipline of matching language to what is known.

85. Persuasive

Persuasive means effective at influencing belief or action through reasons, evidence, credibility, emotion or presentation. Persuasive does not necessarily mean true. A weak claim can be rhetorically persuasive, which is why readers must separate persuasive force from evidential strength. Common combinations include persuasive argument, persuasive technique and highly persuasive. Maren aims for arguments that are persuasive because they are well-supported, not because they hide limitations. Iona asks, “What is making this feel convincing, and is that the same thing as being justified?”

86. Qualify

To qualify a claim is to limit or modify it so that it better matches the evidence. Words such as often, may, under these conditions, to some extent and for this group can qualify a statement. Qualification is not weakness. It is a sign that the writer understands scope and uncertainty. Common combinations include qualify a claim, qualified support and with an important qualification. Maren asks, “What boundary must I add to make this sentence defensible?”

87. Concede

Concede means to acknowledge that part of an opposing point is valid without necessarily accepting the whole argument. In debate and essay writing, concession increases credibility when it identifies a real limitation or counterpoint. Common combinations include concede that, concede a point and concession to the opposing view. Maren may write, “Admittedly, the policy increases short-term cost; however…” The concession works only if the following reasoning shows why the main position still holds. Conceding is not surrender; it is controlled acknowledgement.

88. Rebut

Rebut means to respond to an argument by showing why it is weak, incomplete or incorrect. A rebuttal should engage the actual point rather than a distorted version. Common combinations include rebut a claim, rebut an argument and rebuttal evidence. Iona first reconstructs the opposing claim fairly; Maren then tests its assumptions, evidence or logic. 89. Acknowledge

Acknowledge means to recognise the existence, importance or truth of something. In academic writing, a writer may acknowledge limitations, uncertainty, alternative explanations or evidence that does not fit perfectly. Common combinations include acknowledge a limitation, acknowledge that and openly acknowledge. Acknowledgement differs from concession because it may concern information rather than an opposing argument. Maren uses it to show intellectual honesty. Iona uses it when a text includes complexity that cannot be ignored without distorting the evidence.

90. Substantiate

Substantiate means to support a claim with adequate evidence or reasoning. It is stronger than “explain” because the focus is on evidential support. Common combinations include substantiate a claim, substantiate an allegation and substantiated by evidence. Maren uses the word as a self-check: every important claim should be either common background knowledge, logically derived or substantiated. Iona asks whether the supplied evidence actually bears the weight of the claim. Word family: substantiate, substantiation, substantiated.

Cluster 10: Research and knowledge vocabulary

The final cluster gives students a compact vocabulary for research, evidence and knowledge production. These words help them understand how information is generated, checked and limited. They also help students read claims about science, health, technology and society with more care.

91. Hypothesis

A hypothesis is a proposed explanation or prediction that can be examined using evidence. In scientific contexts, a good hypothesis is specific enough to be tested. In broader reasoning, the word can describe a provisional explanatory idea. Common combinations include test a hypothesis, working hypothesis, support a hypothesis and reject a hypothesis. A hypothesis is not the same as a random guess; it should connect to existing information. Iona treats it as a proposal awaiting evidence rather than a conclusion already earned.

92. Variable

A variable is a characteristic, quantity or condition that can take different values. In experiments, variables may be manipulated, measured or controlled. In mathematics, a variable represents a value that can change. In social research, age, income or study time may be variables. Common combinations include independent variable, dependent variable, control variable and variable of interest. Leonie remembers that before discussing relationships, students must know what is changing and how it is measured.

93. Methodology

Methodology refers to the organised system of methods, assumptions and procedures used to investigate a question. It is broader than a single method. A methodology section may explain sampling, measurement, comparison, analysis and limitations. Common combinations include research methodology, methodological limitation and methodologically sound. Students should not use the word as a grander synonym for “method” when only one technique is meant. Iona examines methodology because conclusions are only as trustworthy as the process used to produce the evidence.

94. Data

Data are recorded observations, measurements or information used for analysis. In modern usage, data is often treated as either plural or mass noun depending on style. More important than grammar is understanding that data do not become meaningful automatically. They require context, measurement definitions and analysis. Common combinations include data set, data collection, qualitative data, quantitative data and data indicate. Iona asks how the data were produced before asking what conclusion they support.

95. Source

A source is the origin of information, evidence, quotation or data. Sources can be primary or secondary, expert or non-expert, contemporary or retrospective. No source is automatically useful merely because it exists. Students should consider relevance, expertise, method, incentives, date and corroboration. Common combinations include primary source, credible source, source material and cite a source. Iona’s key question is: “What can this source reasonably tell me, and what can it not tell me?”

96. Credible

Credible means worthy of belief or trust because the source, method or account has relevant qualities such as expertise, transparency, consistency and evidential support. Credibility is not the same as agreement. A source can be credible and still mistaken. Common combinations include credible source, credible evidence, credible explanation and highly credible. Iona evaluates credibility by looking for reasons for trust rather than relying on appearance. Maren cites strong sources because credibility can transfer only when the evidence is accurately represented.

97. Verify

Verify means to check whether information, a result or a claim is accurate or authentic using independent evidence or a reliable procedure. Common combinations include verify a claim, verify the result, independently verified and verification process. Verification is especially important in a digital environment where information travels faster than careful checking. Iona does not treat repetition across many websites as independent verification if the sites all copied the same original source. Leonie’s cue is: “What independent check could fail this claim if it were wrong?”

98. Replicate

Replicate means to repeat a study, process or result in order to see whether the finding can be reproduced under comparable conditions. Replication increases confidence that a result was not a one-off accident, although exact replication may be difficult in some fields. Common combinations include replicate a study, replicate the result and successful replication. Iona understands that one dramatic study can attract attention, but repeated evidence often deserves more weight. Word family: replicate, replication, replicable.

99. Transparent

Transparent means open enough that relevant methods, assumptions, decisions or information can be inspected by others. In research, transparency may involve explaining procedures and data handling. In institutions, it may involve publishing criteria and decisions. Common combinations include transparent process, methodological transparency and transparent about limitations. Transparency does not guarantee correctness, but it makes evaluation easier. Maren shows her reasoning rather than hiding the steps. Iona values transparency because claims are easier to assess when their production process is visible.

100. Uncertainty

Uncertainty is the condition of incomplete knowledge about a value, event, cause or outcome. Academic maturity includes learning to represent uncertainty rather than erase it. Estimates have uncertainty; predictions have uncertainty; interpretations may have uncertainty. An equity approach might allocate more support to students with greater need. Neither word automatically decides the policy. Iona asks what fairness principle is being used and whether the relevant differences are measured reliably.

Maren writes two defensible positions. Position A: “Equal allocation is transparent and avoids subjective judgements about need.” Position B: “An equitable allocation may improve access for students facing larger learning gaps, provided the criteria for need are valid and transparent.” Each position uses vocabulary to expose assumptions. The debate is no longer “fair versus unfair”; it becomes a comparison of fairness models and implementation risks.

Leonie asks what accountability would look like after implementation. Are outcomes monitored? Can criteria be revised? Are families told how decisions are made? A policy can be ethically attractive in principle yet poorly implemented. The words accountability, legitimate, transparent, monitor and revise connect moral reasoning to operational design.

Extension task: ask students to distinguish equality, equity, justice, welfare and responsibility. They should not define them as five versions of “fairness”. Each word frames a different question: same treatment, context-sensitive fairness, principles of right distribution, well-being, and duty or answerability.

Transfer Lab 9: Planning a group project

A group must produce a presentation in five days. The team has many ideas but limited time. Leonie begins with constraints: five days, four members, one shared presentation and a ten-minute speaking limit. She defines the objective before discussing strategy. The project should be accurate, coherent and deliverable on time. Without that objective, “work harder” is not a strategy.

The team chooses a feasible plan: divide research by sub-question, require a shared source standard, combine findings on Day 3, rehearse on Day 4 and revise on Day 5. They implement the plan, monitor progress and adapt when one source proves unreliable. These words map directly onto project management: strategy is the organised approach, implement is execution, monitor is ongoing observation, adapt is response to change and revise is deliberate improvement.

Maren checks coherence. Four individually strong slides can form a weak presentation if the argument does not connect. She asks each member to state how their section supports the central claim. If a section is interesting but irrelevant, it is cut. The group learns that relevance is also a resource-management concept: time spent on irrelevant content is time unavailable for the material that answers the task.

Extension task: after the presentation, the group conducts a review. Which strategy was efficient? Which was effective? What should be optimized next time? This final reflection turns vocabulary into a language for improvement and prevents the project from disappearing as soon as the grade is awarded.

Transfer Lab 10: Timed examination performance

In a timed paper, vocabulary knowledge competes with reading, planning, handwriting, memory and stress. Leonie therefore trains fast classification. When a prompt says “evaluate”, she recalls that a criterion is required. When it says “justify”, she expects reasons tied to a choice. When a passage offers a clue rather than a direct statement, she thinks “infer”. When an argument makes a broad conclusion from limited evidence, she thinks “insufficient”. These cues reduce the time needed to reconstruct the meaning of command words from scratch.

Maren prepares sentence skeletons, not memorised paragraphs. “The evidence is relevant because ___, but insufficient because ___.” “One plausible explanation is ___; however, an alternative factor is ___.” “Although ___ is a legitimate concern, it does not substantiate the broader claim that ___.” These structures preserve flexibility. The vocabulary controls reasoning while the content changes with the question.

Iona practises scope control. She circles qualifiers in the question: most important, to what extent, likely, immediate, long-term, according to the passage. Academic vocabulary is useful only if it answers the actual task. A beautifully phrased paragraph that ignores scope is still weak. Relevance comes before sophistication.

Extension task: perform a three-minute oral response using five randomly selected words from different clusters. The student must use each word naturally and accurately. If a word cannot be used without forcing the sentence, the student may replace it and explain why. That final explanation is itself evidence of vocabulary maturity: knowing when not to use a word is part of knowing it.

Sentence transformation workshop: from vague language to academic precision

The transformations below are not templates to memorise. They demonstrate how vocabulary changes the logical structure of a sentence. Read the plain version first. Then ask what additional distinction appears in the revised version.

  • Plain: The writer looks at the problem. Precise: The writer analyzes the problem by separating its economic and social dimensions.
  • Plain: The graph means demand is rising. Precise: The graph can be interpreted as evidence of rising demand, although the cause is not shown.
  • Plain: This solution is good. Precise: Using cost and reliability as criteria, the solution can be evaluated as comparatively strong.
  • Plain: We can tell she is worried. Precise: Her repeated questions allow the reader to infer that she is worried.
  • Plain: I chose this option for a reason. Precise: The lower failure rate justifies choosing this option under the stated criterion.
  • Plain: The three sources say different things. Precise: A synthesis of the sources shows agreement on the trend but disagreement about the mechanism.
  • Plain: These two ideas are not the same. Precise: We should distinguish correlation from causation because they make different claims about mechanism.
  • Plain: Both systems have good and bad points. Precise: A comparison using cost, speed and reliability reveals different trade-offs.
  • Plain: The second speaker is different. Precise: In contrast, the second speaker uses cautious language and narrower claims.
  • Plain: The sentence is confusing. Precise: The writer should clarify whether “they” refers to the researchers or the participants.
  • Plain: There is proof. Precise: The study provides evidence, but the strength of that evidence depends on the method.
  • Plain: The writer says phones damage learning. Precise: The central claim is that frequent phone interruptions reduce sustained attention during study.
  • Plain: The argument starts from the idea that everyone has internet. Precise: Universal internet access is an unstated premise of the argument.
  • Plain: The writer takes this for granted. Precise: The conclusion depends on the assumption that cost is the only barrier to access.
  • Plain: I worked out what he meant. Precise: I drew the inference from his refusal to answer directly.
  • Plain: This decision will matter later. Precise: One long-term implication is increased maintenance cost.
  • Plain: This is what the evidence shows. Precise: The available evidence supports a tentative conclusion, not a universal rule.
  • Plain: The test is good. Precise: The test has stronger validity if it actually measures the skill it claims to assess.
  • Plain: The result is dependable. Precise: Repeated measurements suggest acceptable reliability.
  • Plain: Scientists measured it. Precise: The claim has empirical support from direct measurement.
  • Plain: This is not just my opinion. Precise: The judgement uses objective criteria that other observers can inspect.
  • Plain: Beauty depends on the person. Precise: Aesthetic judgement contains a subjective component shaped by personal response.
  • Plain: This explanation could be true. Precise: This is a plausible explanation, but alternatives remain possible.
  • Plain: It is probably true. Precise: The outcome appears probable given the available evidence, though not certain.
  • Plain: This change matters. Precise: The change is significant because it alters access for a large group.
  • Plain: This fact belongs in the answer. Precise: The fact is relevant because it directly addresses the question’s stated cause.
  • Plain: There is not enough support. Precise: The evidence is relevant but insufficient for the breadth of the conclusion.
  • Plain: The results fit the idea. Precise: The results are consistent with the hypothesis but do not uniquely prove it.
  • Plain: The essay makes sense as a whole. Precise: The essay is coherent because each paragraph advances the same line of reasoning.
  • Plain: Stress made the problem happen. Precise: Stress may have contributed to the outcome alongside other factors.
  • Plain: The variables move together. Precise: The variables correlate, but the relationship does not establish causation.
  • Plain: The rule makes adoption harder. Precise: The rule may inhibit adoption by increasing cost.
  • Plain: The tool makes communication easier. Precise: The tool facilitates communication by reducing response delay.
  • Plain: Time limits what we can do. Precise: Time constrains the range of feasible options.
  • Plain: The numbers mostly rise. Precise: The data show an upward trend despite short-term variation.
  • Plain: The same thing keeps happening. Precise: A recurring pattern appears across the observations.
  • Plain: The scores are not all the same. Precise: There is substantial variation in the score distribution.
  • Plain: Half the group chose it. Precise: The proportion selecting the option was approximately one half.
  • Plain: The effect is quite large. Precise: The magnitude of the effect is larger than in the comparison condition.
  • Plain: It happens often. Precise: The event occurs at a high frequency during peak periods.
  • Plain: The values are spread out. Precise: The distribution is wide, with observations across several ranges.
  • Plain: We think the cost is around $500. Precise: We estimate the cost at approximately $500 under the stated assumptions.
  • Plain: The number is not exact. Precise: The reported value is approximate because the graph does not permit exact reading.
  • Plain: We should put a number on the effect. Precise: The next step is to quantify the magnitude of the change.
  • Plain: You need to know what was happening around it. Precise: The quotation must be read in its historical and textual context.
  • Plain: She sees the problem differently. Precise: Her perspective reflects different experiences and priorities.
  • Plain: The sample pushes the result in one direction. Precise: Selection bias may distort the estimate.
  • Plain: The difference is small but important. Precise: The nuance lies in the degree of certainty, not the overall position.
  • Plain: The sentence can mean two things. Precise: The pronoun creates ambiguity because it has two possible antecedents.
  • Plain: This is the usual way the genre works. Precise: The structure follows a recognised genre convention.
  • Plain: These beliefs shape the policy. Precise: The policy reflects an underlying political ideology.
  • Plain: The character is deciding who she is. Precise: The conflict contributes to the character’s identity formation.
  • Plain: The group has shared ways of doing things. Precise: These practices form part of the group’s culture.
  • Plain: People expect this behaviour. Precise: The behaviour is reinforced by a social norm.
  • Plain: Everyone gets the same thing. Precise: The policy emphasises equality rather than equity.
  • Plain: The decision should be fair. Precise: The argument appeals to a principle of justice based on equal opportunity.
  • Plain: There is a right-and-wrong issue. Precise: The proposal raises an ethical question about informed consent.
  • Plain: The team has to own the result. Precise: The team has shared responsibility for the outcome.

Self-diagnostic: do you own the word or merely recognise it?

For each word, give yourself one point for each level you can complete without looking: Level 1 — recognise the word in a sentence; Level 2 — explain the meaning in plain language; Level 3 — produce one natural collocation; Level 4 — distinguish it from a nearby word; Level 5 — use it in an original sentence from a different subject; Level 6 — retrieve it from a meaning cue after a delay; Level 7 — use it accurately under time pressure.

A score of one or two means recognition is beginning. Three or four means the word is becoming usable but may still fail under pressure. Five or six means the network is strong. Seven means the word is close to active ownership. The score is not a grade. It is a diagnostic map. A student who scores six on relevant but two on sufficient should not “revise vocabulary” generally; the student should repair the specific weak word and, even more importantly, the boundary between the two.

Run the diagnostic in both directions. Word-to-meaning checks comprehension. Meaning-to-word checks production. Sentence-to-choice checks discrimination. Subject-to-word checks transfer. Timed prompt-to-word checks automaticity. A learner can be strong in one direction and weak in another. That asymmetry explains why students sometimes say, “I know the word, but I could not think of it in the examination.” They knew it in recognition, not yet in retrieval.

Finally, keep an error log. Record the target word, the wrong word chosen, the boundary that was missed and one corrected example. If a student writes cause where contribute is more accurate, the repair note should say: “Cause claims production; contribute claims partial influence among other factors.” This turns mistakes into reusable distinctions. Over time, the error log becomes a personalised vocabulary curriculum.

Final standard: vocabulary as a decision system

The best test of a Secondary 3 or Grade 9 vocabulary list is not whether the words look advanced. It is whether they improve decisions. Does the student know when to call evidence relevant rather than sufficient? When to say correlate rather than cause? When to qualify rather than weaken a claim accidentally? When to distinguish equity from equality, efficient from effective, credible from correct, and plausible from proven? Those decisions are where vocabulary becomes intelligence in use.

That is also why high-utility words matter. They recur because the intellectual problems recur. Students repeatedly need to identify evidence, judge sufficiency, explain mechanisms, quantify change, acknowledge uncertainty, compare perspectives and revise strategies. A learner who controls those words has not simply memorised a list. The learner has acquired a portable language for making distinctions across school subjects and beyond school.
