Top 100 Secondary 3 Vocabulary List | Academic Verbs for Essays, Analysis and Evidence

Strong academic writing often improves when the verbs improve. Nouns tell a reader what the topic is. Verbs tell the reader what the thinking is doing. A student can state a claim, support it, qualify it, challenge it, compare it, derive it, evaluate it, verify it or reject it. Those are not decorative substitutions for “say” and “show”. Each verb specifies a different intellectual operation.

This guide is the `EDKSG-VOC-S3-WORLD-030` node in the world-facing Secondary 3 vocabulary lane. It is designed for Secondary 3 students and for international learners at a broadly similar Grade 9 stage. It targets one precise job: building a working inventory of academic verbs for essays, comprehension, source analysis, Science explanations, Humanities responses, reports and evidence-based writing.

It does not replace the Top 100 Secondary 3 Academic Vocabulary List or the Secondary 3 High-Frequency Vocabulary | 120 Grade 9 Words Every Student Should Know. Those articles provide broader inventories. This article narrows the lens to verbs because verbs are where reasoning becomes visible.

Iona, Maren and Leonie return as three operating lenses. Iona reads and asks what operation the author is performing. Maren writes and asks which verb best represents the intended relationship. Leonie trains retrieval so the verb is available quickly enough during timed work. Together they turn vocabulary from a list of definitions into a system for thinking.

Why academic verbs matter in Secondary 3 and Grade 9 writing

Compare these sentences: “The article says that the policy failed.” “The article argues that the policy failed.” “The article suggests that the policy failed.” “The article demonstrates that the policy failed.” “The article asserts that the policy failed.” The topic is identical. The verb changes the epistemic claim. Says is neutral and broad. Argues implies a position supported by reasons. Suggests leaves uncertainty. Demonstrates makes a stronger evidential claim. Asserts emphasises confident statement and can even hint that support is incomplete.

That is why vocabulary growth at this stage should include verb precision. Students are increasingly expected to write about evidence, cause, comparison, source quality, explanation and evaluation. They need language that can represent those moves accurately. A strong academic verb does two jobs at once: it communicates the content and labels the reasoning relationship.

The 100 verbs are organised into ten functional clusters. Learn the cluster first, then the individual verb. This creates a retrieval map: when a task requires evaluation, the mind searches the evaluation cluster; when the task requires evidence, it searches the evidence cluster. Functional organisation is usually more useful than alphabetical memorisation because school tasks are functional problems.

Cluster 1: Verbs for stating and representing ideas

1. State

State means to express something clearly and directly. Common combinations include state a reason, state a conclusion and state explicitly. Example: “The report states that demand increased in the second quarter.” The verb does not tell us whether the statement is well supported. It only tells us that the proposition is expressed. Contrast with argue: state presents; argue presents a position with reasons.

2. Assert

Assert means to state something confidently or forcefully. Common combinations include assert that, assert a right and strongly assert. Example: “The editorial asserts that the reform will save money, although it provides no detailed estimate.” Assertion is not the same as proof. Contrast with demonstrate: assert states strongly; demonstrate shows through evidence or reasoning.

3. Argue

Argue means to present a position and support it with reasons or evidence. Common combinations include argue that, argue for, argue against and convincingly argue. Example: “The author argues that transport policy should be judged by access as well as cost.” Contrast with claim: a claim is a proposition; an argument develops reasons intended to support it.

4. Claim

Claim means to present something as true or defensible. Common combinations include claim that, claim responsibility and claim superiority. Example: “The company claims that its new process reduces waste.” The verb can remain neutral or signal that the writer has not independently accepted the statement. Contrast with establish: claim proposes truth; establish provides enough support to treat something as demonstrated for the relevant purpose.

5. Propose

Propose means to put forward an idea, explanation, plan or solution for consideration. Common combinations include propose a solution, propose that and proposed mechanism. Example: “The researchers propose that sleep improves recall by supporting memory consolidation.” A proposal is not yet a settled conclusion. Contrast with conclude: propose comes before full acceptance; conclude follows reasoning or evidence.

6. Suggest

Suggest means to indicate a possibility or point toward a conclusion without claiming certainty. Common combinations include evidence suggests, suggest a reason and strongly suggest. Example: “The pattern suggests that another factor may be involved.” Contrast with prove: suggest leaves room for uncertainty and alternatives; prove makes a much stronger claim.

7. Indicate

Indicate means to show, point to or signal something. Common combinations include results indicate, indicate a trend and clearly indicate. Example: “The survey results indicate a shift in preference.” The word is often useful when data support a direction without establishing the full mechanism. Contrast with confirm: indicate points toward; confirm provides stronger verification.

8. Describe

Describe means to give an account of characteristics, events or patterns. Common combinations include describe a trend, describe the process and accurately describe. Example: “The graph describes a gradual decline followed by a stable period.” Description tells what is present. Contrast with explain: explanation addresses why or how.

9. Define

Define means to state the meaning, boundaries or essential features of a term or concept. Common combinations include define a term, clearly defined and define the scope. Example: “Before evaluating fairness, the essay defines what it means by equitable access.” Contrast with describe: definition fixes conceptual boundaries; description provides characteristics.

10. Characterize

Characterize means to describe the distinctive qualities or nature of something. Common combinations include characterize a period, characterize behaviour and best characterized as. Example: “The decade can be characterized by rapid growth followed by consolidation.” Contrast with label: a label names a category; characterization explains the qualities that justify the category.

Cluster 2: Verbs for explaining and clarifying

11. Explain

Explain means to make something understandable by showing how or why it happens. Common combinations include explain a process, explain why and explain the relationship. Example: “The paragraph explains how the rule changes incentives.” Contrast with describe: description gives what; explanation gives how or why.

12. Clarify

Clarify means to remove ambiguity, confusion or vagueness. Common combinations include clarify a distinction, clarify the meaning and clarify expectations. Example: “The writer clarifies that the conclusion applies only to the tested age group.” Contrast with expand: expansion adds material; clarification makes existing meaning easier to interpret.

13. Illustrate

Illustrate means to make an idea clearer through an example, case, image or demonstration. Common combinations include illustrate a point and illustrate the difference. Example: “The two cities illustrate how similar policies can produce different outcomes.” Illustration clarifies a concept but does not automatically establish a general rule.

14. Elaborate

Elaborate means to add useful detail, explanation or development. Common combinations include elaborate on and elaborate explanation. Example: “Maren elaborates on the claim by identifying the mechanism and two constraints.” Contrast with repeat: elaboration adds new explanatory value; repetition restates the same content.

15. Specify

Specify means to state exact details, requirements or boundaries. Common combinations include specify the conditions, specify a value and as specified. Example: “The question specifies that only long-term effects should be considered.” Contrast with mention: mention includes; specify fixes detail precisely.

16. Demonstrate

Demonstrate means to show clearly through evidence, reasoning or action. Common combinations include demonstrate understanding, demonstrate a relationship and demonstrate effectiveness. Example: “The experiment demonstrates a measurable difference between the conditions.” Contrast with suggest: demonstrate is a stronger evidential verb and should be used only when support is strong enough.

17. Exemplify

Exemplify means to serve as a clear example of a quality, pattern or category. Common combinations include exemplify a trend and exemplify the principle. Example: “The case exemplifies the trade-off between speed and accuracy.” Contrast with prove: an example can exemplify without establishing that the pattern is universal.

18. Interpret

Interpret means to explain the meaning or significance of language, evidence, data or behaviour. Common combinations include interpret the findings and interpret a passage. Example: “Iona interprets the repeated pauses as evidence of hesitation.” Interpretation must remain anchored to evidence.

19. Translate

Translate can mean convert between languages or convert an idea from one form into another. Common academic patterns include translate findings into practice and translate data into decisions. Example: “The final section translates the research findings into classroom recommendations.” Contrast with copy: translation preserves meaning while changing form or context.

20. Summarize

Summarize means to present the main points in a shorter form. Common combinations include summarize findings, summarize the argument and briefly summarize. Example: “The conclusion summarizes the central findings without introducing new evidence.” Contrast with analyze: summarizing compresses; analyzing breaks apart and examines relationships.

Cluster 3: Verbs for analysing structure and relationships

21. Analyze

Analyze means to examine systematically by separating a complex thing into parts and studying their relationships. Common combinations include analyze evidence, analyze a text and analyze data. Example: “The essay analyzes how incentives, cost and access interact.” Contrast with summarize: analysis explains structure; summary condenses content.

22. Examine

Examine means to inspect something carefully in order to understand, evaluate or discover features. Common combinations include examine the evidence, examine a question and closely examine. Example: “The report examines three possible causes.” Examine is broad and does not by itself specify whether the goal is description, analysis or evaluation.

23. Identify

Identify means to recognise, name or locate something relevant. Common combinations include identify a factor, identify the cause and identify a pattern. Example: “The first step is to identify which variable changed.” Identification is often necessary before explanation but is not the same as explanation.

24. Distinguish

Distinguish means to recognise and explain an important difference between things that may appear similar. Common combinations include distinguish between and distinguish A from B. Example: “Students must distinguish correlation from causation.” The verb is valuable because many academic errors are boundary errors.

25. Differentiate

Differentiate means to recognise or create a difference between items, categories or processes. Common combinations include differentiate between and differentiate instruction. Example: “The framework differentiates immediate effects from long-term effects.” Contrast with distinguish: the two overlap, but differentiate often emphasises systematic classification or separation.

26. Compare

Compare means to examine things in relation to shared dimensions. Common combinations include compare outcomes, compare methods and compare with. Example: “The essay compares the two policies using cost, reach and reliability.” Good comparison requires the same criterion to be applied to both.

27. Contrast

Contrast means to highlight meaningful differences. Common combinations include contrast approaches, contrast viewpoints and in contrast to. Example: “The paragraph contrasts short-term convenience with long-term resilience.” Contrast should select differences relevant to the question, not list every possible difference.

28. Relate

Relate means to connect one idea, event or variable to another. Common combinations include relate X to Y and closely related. Example: “The article relates transport access to employment opportunity.” A relationship does not automatically imply cause.

29. Connect

Connect means to link ideas, evidence, events or systems. Common combinations include connect evidence to a claim and connect theory with practice. Example: “Maren connects the example directly to the paragraph’s main claim.” Contrast with associate: connection can be logical or structural; association may simply indicate co-occurrence or relationship.

30. Categorize

Categorize means to organise items into groups based on shared properties or criteria. Common combinations include categorize responses and categorize evidence. Example: “The researcher categorizes errors by type rather than treating all mistakes as identical.” Categories become useful only when the criterion is clear.

Cluster 4: Verbs for evidence and support

31. Support

Support means to provide reasons or evidence that increase confidence in a claim. Common combinations include support a claim, strongly support and support with evidence. Example: “The data support a modest conclusion about this sample.” Support does not always mean prove.

32. Substantiate

Substantiate means to provide adequate evidence for a claim. Common combinations include substantiate an argument and substantiated by evidence. Example: “The article does not substantiate the claim that the effect is universal.” Contrast with illustrate: illustration gives an example; substantiation provides enough support for acceptance.

33. Confirm

Confirm means to provide stronger evidence that something is correct, true or present. Common combinations include confirm a result, confirm the diagnosis and confirm that. Example: “A second measurement confirmed the original reading.” Use carefully: confirmation is stronger than suggestion and should reflect actual verification.

34. Verify

Verify means to check accuracy, authenticity or truth using an independent procedure or source. Common combinations include verify a claim, verify the source and independently verified. Example: “Iona verifies the statistic against the original report before citing it.” Contrast with repeat: repeating a claim is not verifying it.

35. Corroborate

Corroborate means to strengthen a claim or account by providing independent supporting evidence. Common combinations include corroborate a witness account and corroborating evidence. Example: “The second source corroborates the date but not the explanation.” Corroboration is especially useful in source analysis because independence matters.

36. Establish

Establish means to show something with enough evidence or reasoning that it can be treated as supported for the relevant purpose. Common combinations include establish a relationship, establish a fact and well established. Example: “The study establishes that the two groups differed, but not why.” Contrast with claim: establish is evidentially stronger.

37. Validate

Validate means to check or demonstrate that a method, model, measure or result is appropriate and works as intended. Common combinations include validate a model, validate a measure and validation study. Example: “The researchers validate the survey against an independent measure.” Contrast with approve: validation concerns evidence of fitness; approval is a decision.

38. Reinforce

Reinforce means to strengthen an existing idea, pattern, behaviour or structure. Common combinations include reinforce a conclusion, reinforce learning and reinforce a stereotype. Example: “The second dataset reinforces the original interpretation.” Reinforcement adds strength but does not necessarily make the conclusion final.

39. Cite

Cite means to identify a source, example, authority or evidence in support of a statement. Common combinations include cite a source, cite evidence and frequently cited. Example: “Maren cites the original study rather than a repost.” Citation shows where information comes from; it does not guarantee that the source is credible.

40. Reference

Reference means to mention or point to a source, idea, document or earlier part of a text. Example: “The report references three previous studies.” Contrast with cite: citation often follows a formal source convention; reference is broader and can simply point to material.

Cluster 5: Verbs for evaluation and judgement

41. Evaluate

Evaluate means to judge quality, value, effectiveness or strength using relevant criteria. Common combinations include evaluate evidence, evaluate effectiveness and critically evaluate. Example: “The essay evaluates both policies using cost, fairness and reliability.” Evaluation requires criteria; otherwise it becomes opinion.

42. Assess

Assess means to examine and judge the nature, amount, quality or significance of something. Common combinations include assess risk, assess performance and assess the evidence. Example: “Before choosing, Leonie assesses the likely benefit and cost.” Assessment often gathers information to support later decisions.

43. Judge

Judge means to form an opinion or decision after considering evidence or standards. Common combinations include judge effectiveness and judge fairly. Example: “The source should be judged according to the claim it is being used to support.” Contrast with assume: judgement should follow examination; assumption precedes full evidence.

44. Appraise

Appraise means to evaluate the quality, value or condition of something carefully. Common combinations include appraise performance and critical appraisal. Example: “The review appraises the strengths and limitations of the study.” Appraise is useful in formal evaluation contexts.

45. Prioritize

Prioritize means to rank tasks, goals or concerns according to importance or urgency. Common combinations include prioritize safety, prioritize tasks and prioritize evidence. Example: “The plan prioritizes high-impact errors before minor stylistic issues.” Prioritization requires an explicit or implicit criterion.

46. Rank

Rank means to arrange items in order according to a criterion. Common combinations include rank by importance and rank the options. Example: “The team ranks the risks by probability and severity.” Ranking can simplify decisions, but the criterion must be defensible.

47. Value

Value means to consider something important, useful or worthwhile, or to estimate its worth. Example: “The framework values reliability over speed when safety is involved.” The word can describe a preference or a formal valuation depending on context.

48. Weigh

Weigh means to consider competing factors, evidence or consequences before deciding. Common combinations include weigh the evidence, weigh costs and benefits and carefully weigh. Example: “The decision weighs short-term cost against long-term resilience.” The metaphor is useful because evaluation often involves trade-offs.

49. Critique

Critique means to analyse and evaluate strengths, weaknesses, assumptions and implications. Example: “The essay critiques the model rather than merely rejecting it.” A critique can include praise as well as criticism. Contrast with criticize: critique is systematic evaluation; criticize often emphasises faults.

50. Scrutinize

Scrutinize means to examine very closely, especially for weaknesses, inconsistencies or important detail. Common combinations include scrutinize evidence and closely scrutinized. Example: “Iona scrutinizes the graph scale before accepting the visual impression.” It is stronger than examine and should be used when unusually close inspection is intended.

Cluster 6: Verbs for cause, effect and change

51. Cause

Cause means to produce an effect. Example: “The evidence is not strong enough to show that the policy caused the change.” Because this verb makes a strong causal claim, it should be used only when the evidence supports more than association.

52. Contribute

Contribute means to add partly to an outcome as one factor among others. Common combinations include contribute to and contributing factor. Example: “Sleep loss may contribute to slower recall.” It is often more accurate than cause in multi-factor systems.

53. Influence

Influence means to affect an outcome, decision or behaviour without necessarily determining it completely. Example: “Peer expectations influence participation.” Contrast with determine: influence affects; determine fixes or decisively controls.

54. Affect

Affect means to produce a change in something. Common combinations include affect performance, affect behaviour and significantly affect. Example: “Temperature may affect reaction rate.” Affect is broad and does not explain the mechanism by itself.

55. Facilitate

Facilitate means to make a process easier or more likely. Common combinations include facilitate learning, facilitate access and facilitate communication. Example: “Clear cues facilitate retrieval by reducing search difficulty.” It means enable or ease, not necessarily cause.

56. Inhibit

Inhibit means to slow, restrict or reduce a process. Common combinations include inhibit growth and inhibit participation. Example: “Fear of error may inhibit discussion.” Contrast with prevent: inhibit reduces or constrains; prevent stops.

57. Trigger

Trigger means to initiate or set off a process or event. Example: “A sudden shortage triggered a price increase.” The verb identifies an initiating event, not necessarily the deepest underlying cause.

58. Generate

Generate means to produce, create or bring about an output. Common combinations include generate data, generate ideas and generate revenue. Example: “The model generates predictions that can be tested.” Contrast with explain: generation produces; explanation accounts for why.

59. Reduce

Reduce means to make smaller in amount, severity, frequency or intensity. Example: “The intervention reduced error frequency but did not eliminate the error.” Contrast with eliminate: reduction is partial; elimination is complete.

60. Transform

Transform means to change substantially in form, function or character. Example: “The new transport link transformed the district’s land use.” Because transform is strong, it should not be used for minor modifications.

Cluster 7: Verbs for comparison, synthesis and integration

61. Synthesize

Synthesize means to combine information from multiple sources into a new coherent understanding. Common combinations include synthesize evidence and synthesize findings. Example: “The essay synthesizes the survey, interview and historical data into one explanation.” It is more than summarising sources separately.

62. Integrate

Integrate means to combine parts so they work together within a larger whole. Common combinations include integrate evidence, integrate technology and integrate sources. Example: “Maren integrates evidence into the paragraph instead of placing quotations without explanation.”

63. Combine

Combine means to bring two or more things together. Example: “The method combines retrieval practice with spaced review.” It is broader and less analytical than synthesize or integrate.

64. Reconcile

Reconcile means to bring apparently conflicting ideas, results or accounts into a relationship that can be understood together. Example: “The explanation reconciles the two datasets by showing that they measure different time periods.” Reconciliation does not require pretending the conflict never existed.

65. Align

Align means to bring goals, methods, evidence or actions into agreement or coordination. Common combinations include align with and align objectives. Example: “The assessment should align with the skill the course claims to teach.”

66. Associate

Associate means to connect two things in thought, observation or statistical relationship. Example: “Higher attendance was associated with stronger performance.” Association is deliberately weaker than causation and is useful when the evidence does not establish cause.

67. Correlate

Correlate means to vary together in a statistical or observable relationship. Example: “Study time correlated with test performance in the sample.” Correlation does not establish causation.

68. Map

Map means to represent relationships, locations, stages or correspondences systematically. Common combinations include map a process, map relationships and map onto. Example: “The diagram maps each claim to the evidence supporting it.”

69. Link

Link means to connect one item or idea with another. Example: “The paragraph links the policy mechanism to the observed outcome.” Link is useful when the nature of the relationship is clear from context, but it should not be used to hide uncertainty about causation.

70. Organize

Organize means to arrange information, actions or ideas into a meaningful structure. Example: “The essay organizes evidence by cause rather than by source.” Organization is itself a reasoning choice because structure changes what relationships become visible.

Cluster 8: Verbs for challenge, limitation and counterargument

71. Challenge

Challenge means to question, dispute or test the strength of a claim, assumption or practice. Example: “The new evidence challenges the assumption that the decline was inevitable.” A challenge does not automatically refute; it creates a serious reason for re-examination.

72. Question

Question means to express doubt about the truth, validity or adequacy of something. Example: “The small sample leads Iona to question the general conclusion.” Contrast with reject: questioning opens doubt; rejection refuses acceptance.

73. Dispute

Dispute means to challenge the truth, accuracy or legitimacy of a claim. Example: “Several researchers dispute the proposed mechanism.” The word signals direct disagreement and is stronger than simply question.

74. Refute

Refute means to show that a claim or argument is false or seriously flawed through evidence or reasoning. Example: “One counterexample may refute a universal claim.” The verb is often misused for mere disagreement. A rebuttal responds; refutation succeeds in undermining the claim.

75. Rebut

Rebut means to respond to an argument by showing weaknesses, missing evidence or faulty assumptions. Example: “Maren rebuts the claim by showing that the comparison groups were not equivalent.” Contrast with refute: rebut describes the response; refute implies the response successfully disproves or defeats the claim.

76. Reject

Reject means to decide not to accept a claim, proposal, explanation or result. Example: “The team rejects the method because it fails the reliability criterion.” Strong rejection should be tied to a reason, not preference alone.

77. Limit

Limit means to restrict scope, quantity, strength or applicability. Example: “The small sample limits how widely the findings can be generalized.” Limitations specify boundaries rather than making an entire study useless.

78. Constrain

Constrain means to restrict the range of possible actions, outcomes or interpretations. Example: “The deadline constrains the number of sources the team can evaluate.” Constraints define the solution space.

79. Qualify

Qualify means to limit or modify a statement so it matches the evidence more accurately. Example: “Maren qualifies ‘technology improves learning’ to ‘technology can improve learning under specific instructional conditions’.” Qualification often strengthens an argument by preventing overclaiming.

80. Concede

Concede means to acknowledge that part of an opposing argument is valid. Example: “The essay concedes that implementation will be expensive, then argues that the long-term benefit justifies the cost.” Concession is controlled acknowledgement, not surrender.

Cluster 9: Verbs for research, method and data

81. Investigate

Investigate means to examine a question systematically in order to discover evidence or explanation. Example: “The study investigates whether sleep duration predicts delayed recall.” The verb implies an inquiry rather than a predetermined conclusion.

82. Observe

Observe means to notice and record an event, behaviour or measurement. Example: “The class observes that the solution changes colour.” Observation should be separated from interpretation: “the colour changed” is observation; “the reaction is complete” is interpretation.

83. Measure

Measure means to determine quantity, degree or performance using an instrument, scale or operational definition. Example: “The test measures recall after a twenty-four-hour delay.” A measure is valid only if it captures the intended construct well enough for the purpose.

84. Quantify

Quantify means to express something numerically. Example: “The study quantifies the reduction in error rate.” Quantification can add clarity but does not automatically create validity or importance.

85. Estimate

Estimate means to produce a reasoned approximate value when exact information is unavailable or unnecessary. Example: “The team estimates annual cost using current prices.” Good estimates state assumptions and uncertainty.

86. Calculate

Calculate means to determine a numerical result using mathematical operations or a formal method. Example: “Leonie calculates the percentage-point change rather than relying on visual impression.” Contrast with estimate: calculation can be exact given the inputs; estimation approximates.

87. Derive

Derive means to obtain a result, conclusion, formula or meaning from a source or reasoning process. Example: “The conclusion is derived from three independent measurements.” In Mathematics, derive can mean develop a formula through reasoning; in language, a word may be derived from a root.

88. Replicate

Replicate means to repeat a study or procedure in order to test whether a result can be reproduced. Example: “A second laboratory replicated the effect under similar conditions.” Replication increases confidence that a finding is not a one-off result.

89. Sample

Sample means to select or examine a subset intended to provide information about a larger population or set. Example: “The survey samples students from several schools.” Sampling quality affects how far conclusions can be generalized.

90. Model

Model means to represent a system, process or relationship in simplified form for explanation, prediction or testing. Example: “The simulation models traffic flow under different road capacities.” Models are useful because they simplify, but every simplification leaves something out.

Cluster 10: Verbs for conclusion, decision and action

91. Conclude

Conclude means to reach a judgement after considering evidence or reasoning. Common combinations include conclude that and tentatively conclude. Example: “The researchers conclude that the intervention improved recall in the tested group.” The conclusion should not exceed the scope of the evidence.

92. Infer

Infer means to reach a conclusion from evidence or clues that do not state it directly. Example: “Iona infers hesitation from the repeated pauses.” The text or speaker implies; the reader infers.

93. Decide

Decide means to choose among alternatives after consideration. Example: “The team decides to adopt the slower method because reliability matters more than speed.” Good decision language should make the criterion visible.

94. Select

Select means to choose from a set according to a purpose or criterion. Example: “Maren selects the verb suggests because the evidence is limited.” Selection highlights that language use itself is a choice problem.

95. Recommend

Recommend means to advise that an action, option or method should be adopted. Example: “The report recommends a pilot programme before full implementation.” Recommendations should follow from criteria, evidence and constraints rather than preference alone.

96. Implement

Implement means to put a plan, policy or strategy into practice. Example: “The school implements the change in stages.” Designing a solution and implementing it are different tasks; implementation requires ownership, resources, timing and monitoring.

97. Monitor

Monitor means to observe or measure over time in order to detect progress, risk or change. Example: “Leonie monitors delayed recall rather than counting study minutes.” Monitoring creates feedback for later decisions.

98. Revise

Revise means to reconsider and improve a text, plan, method or understanding. Example: “Maren revises the claim after noticing that the evidence supports only a narrower conclusion.” Revision changes more than surface errors when necessary.

99. Adapt

Adapt means to modify in response to new conditions, evidence or constraints. Example: “The team adapts the method after the first trial produces unreliable readings.” Adaptation is purposeful adjustment, not random change.

100. Optimize

Optimize means to improve a system or decision for a defined objective under constraints. Example: “The study schedule is optimized for delayed recall rather than total study time.” Always ask: optimize for what? Improving one objective can worsen another.

How to choose the right academic verb

Maren uses a four-question selection routine. First: what is the intellectual operation? Is the sentence stating, explaining, analysing, supporting, evaluating, challenging or concluding? Second: how strong is the evidence? The difference between suggest, indicate, support, confirm and establish is partly a difference in evidential strength. Third: what is the object of the verb? We evaluate evidence, corroborate an account, replicate a study and qualify a claim. Fourth: what grammar does the verb require? A word is not fully usable until its normal patterns are known.

Students should therefore learn verbs with frames, not as isolated dictionary entries. Argue that…; distinguish A from B; contribute to…; correlate with…; qualify a claim; derive X from Y; conclude that…. These patterns reduce grammatical hesitation during writing and make retrieval faster.

High-value verb ladders: control the strength of your claim

Evidence ladder: suggest → indicate → support → corroborate → confirm → establish. This is not a perfectly fixed ranking in every context, but it gives students a useful calibration. “The results suggest…” is cautious. “The results establish…” is strong. Do not climb the ladder because the stronger verb sounds more academic. Climb only when the evidence earns it.

Challenge ladder: question → challenge → dispute → rebut → refute → reject. These verbs represent different kinds of disagreement. A writer may question a conclusion without rejecting it. A rebuttal responds to an argument. Refutation claims the opposing position has been shown false or unsound. Students who collapse all disagreement into “disagree” lose useful reasoning detail.

Change ladder: affect → influence → modify → reduce/increase → transform. Again, the verbs are not interchangeable. Influence may be partial. Modify implies adjustment. Transform implies extensive change. The verb should match the magnitude and mechanism of the change.

Reading practice: verbs reveal what a writer is doing

Iona underlines reporting verbs in difficult texts because they reveal stance. “Researchers found” differs from “researchers argued”. “The evidence suggests” differs from “the evidence confirms”. “The author acknowledges” differs from “the author concedes”. When students track these verbs, they begin to see the architecture of a paragraph rather than only its topic.

A useful reading exercise is to replace the original verb with a weaker or stronger alternative and ask what changes. If “the findings suggest” becomes “the findings prove”, has the claim become too strong? If “the author refutes” becomes “the author questions”, has the response become too weak? This counterfactual editing develops sensitivity to stance and evidence.

Writing practice: replace vague verbs first

Maren’s fastest writing upgrade is to search a draft for vague verbs such as shows, says, does, makes, gets and has. Not every simple verb needs replacement. But when a relationship matters, a precise academic verb can make the reasoning clearer. “The policy makes access easier” may become “The policy facilitates access.” “The study shows a relationship” may become “The study identifies an association” or “The results correlate with…” depending on the evidence.

The rule is precision before formality. Use is often better than utilize. Show is often better than demonstrate when the evidence is limited. Academic writing does not reward long words for their own sake. It rewards accurate relationships.

A ten-week training plan for the 100 verbs

Week 1: Learn the stating verbs. Take one article and replace every vague “says” with the most accurate alternative: states, argues, claims, proposes, suggests or indicates.

Week 2: Learn the explaining verbs. Practise description versus explanation, illustration versus substantiation, and summary versus analysis.

Week 3: Learn the analysis verbs. Compare two texts using the same criteria and explicitly distinguish at least three near-neighbour concepts.

Week 4: Learn the evidence verbs. Build an evidence ladder and rewrite overconfident sentences using weaker verbs where necessary.

Week 5: Learn the evaluation verbs. Every judgement must name a criterion. If no criterion is visible, the sentence is not yet a strong evaluation.

Week 6: Learn cause-and-change verbs. Practise cause versus contribute, affect versus determine, reduce versus eliminate and modify versus transform.

Week 7: Learn synthesis verbs. Use three sources and produce one paragraph that synthesizes rather than lists them separately.

Week 8: Learn challenge verbs. Write a fair counterargument, then question, rebut and—only if justified—refute it.

Week 9: Learn research verbs. Read a study description and label what was investigated, observed, measured, quantified, estimated, replicated and modeled.

Week 10: Learn decision verbs. Conclude, select, recommend, implement, monitor, revise and adapt a plan based on evidence.

Where to continue in the Secondary 3 vocabulary ecosystem

The goal is not to make every sentence sound formal. The goal is to make the thinking visible. When a student can choose between suggest, demonstrate, substantiate, corroborate, refute, qualify, synthesize, derive and conclude according to what the evidence actually permits, vocabulary has moved beyond decoration. It has become a working language for reasoning.

Transfer Lab: ten subject situations where the verb changes the quality of the answer

Academic verbs become valuable when they transfer. A student who learns evaluate only as an English command word has learned less than a student who can evaluate a historical source, a scientific method, a mathematical model and a policy proposal. The situations below deliberately change subject while preserving the underlying reasoning move.

Transfer Lab 1: English comprehension — state, imply, infer, interpret

A passage never directly says that a speaker is worried. Instead, the speaker checks the time repeatedly, gives unusually short answers and asks whether the door is locked. Iona begins by separating operations. The passage states the actions. Those actions may imply anxiety. The reader infers the emotion. The answer then interprets the pattern by explaining why the details support that inference. Four verbs prevent one vague sentence from doing four different jobs badly.

Maren turns the distinction into a sentence: “The passage does not explicitly state that the speaker is anxious; rather, the repeated checking implies unease, allowing the reader to infer anxiety from the behavioural pattern.” The vocabulary is useful because each verb assigns responsibility correctly. The text implies. The reader infers. The response interprets.

Transfer Lab 2: Science — observe, measure, indicate, establish

A class records plant growth under two light conditions. Students observe a difference and measure the height. The result may indicate that light exposure matters. But whether it establishes causation depends on controls, sample size and competing variables. Leonie learns to stop automatically upgrading every result to the strongest verb.

A calibrated response might read: “The measurements indicate greater growth under the brighter condition, but the experiment does not establish light as the only cause because temperature was not controlled.” That sentence becomes scientifically stronger by using a weaker evidential verb where the design is limited.

Transfer Lab 3: History — cite, corroborate, challenge, reconcile

A historian cites a newspaper report, a private letter and an official record. The sources agree on the date but disagree about motive. One source can corroborate the timing while another challenges the official explanation. A strong historian may then reconcile the apparent contradiction by showing that the sources address different aspects of the event.

This is better than writing “Source A agrees with Source B but Source C disagrees.” The academic verbs specify the relationship among sources. Agreement on one fact is corroboration. Evidence that weakens an explanation is challenge. A new account that shows how both can be partly true is reconciliation.

Transfer Lab 4: Geography — quantify, compare, map, relate

A student studying urban transport must do more than describe a map. She can quantify the change in travel time, compare inner and outer districts, map access to stations and relate transport availability to employment opportunity. The verbs turn separate observations into an analytical structure.

Maren might write: “The analysis maps the areas with the weakest rail access, compares average travel time across districts and relates poor connectivity to lower access to major employment centres.” Each verb tells the reader what operation was performed on the information.

Transfer Lab 5: Mathematics — calculate, estimate, derive, verify

Mathematical language also depends on verb precision. A student may estimate a value before solving, calculate an exact result from given inputs, derive a formula from known relationships and verify the final answer by substitution or an alternative method. Treating these as interchangeable hides different mathematical operations.

Leonie uses the sequence as a problem-solving routine: estimate the expected scale, calculate carefully, derive where necessary, verify before committing. The vocabulary therefore becomes procedural control, not just language knowledge.

Transfer Lab 6: Media literacy — claim, assert, substantiate, verify

A viral video claims that a new study proves a dramatic effect. The creator may assert the conclusion confidently, but the reader must ask whether the source substantiates it. Iona then verifies the number against the original study. These verbs protect students from confusing confidence, repetition and evidence.

A useful rewrite is: “The video asserts that the treatment improves performance by 40%, but the cited study does not substantiate that broad claim; the original data show a smaller effect on one task.” The sentence exposes the evidence gap without using vague language such as “the video is wrong”.

Transfer Lab 7: Technology — propose, evaluate, implement, monitor

A school proposes an AI feedback tool. Proposal is only the first stage. The school must evaluate the tool against criteria such as accuracy, privacy and workload. If chosen, the school must implement it. After implementation, it must monitor performance. Students who know these verbs can distinguish the life cycle of a policy from a single decision.

Leonie notices another boundary: a proposal can be innovative but infeasible; implementation can be efficient but ineffective; monitoring can reveal the need to revise. The verbs force the discussion to move through stages rather than collapse everything into “use the technology”.

Transfer Lab 8: Environmental writing — contribute, reduce, inhibit, transform

Environmental essays often overclaim. A recycling policy may contribute to lower landfill use, reduce waste volume, inhibit certain disposal practices or—if large enough—transform the waste system. These verbs represent different magnitudes and mechanisms. They should not be chosen for drama.

Maren asks a useful question: “If I replace this verb with a weaker one, what meaning disappears?” If nothing important changes, the stronger verb may be ornamental. If changing transform to reduce removes the idea of system-wide change, then the distinction is real and must be supported by evidence.

Transfer Lab 9: Argumentative writing — concede, qualify, rebut, refute

A mature counterargument has stages. Maren first concedes a legitimate part of the opposing case. She then qualifies her own position so it does not exceed the evidence. She may rebut the opposing argument by showing a weakness. Only when evidence truly defeats the claim should she write that it has been refuted.

Example: “Admittedly, the policy increases short-term cost. However, that concern does not refute the broader case for adoption because the long-term savings are larger. The claim should therefore be qualified: the policy is financially advantageous only beyond the initial implementation period.” Each verb performs a different argumentative job.

Transfer Lab 10: Study strategy — assess, prioritize, implement, revise, optimize

Leonie applies the verbs to learning itself. She assesses which vocabulary errors recur, prioritizes the highest-value repairs, implements a retrieval routine, monitors delayed recall, revises the method when it fails and finally optimizes the routine for the objective that matters: durable, accurate retrieval under pressure.

This last laboratory matters because academic vocabulary should become self-referential. Students should be able to use the language of analysis, evidence and revision to improve their own learning. That is a strong sign that transfer has occurred.

Grammar patterns: the verb is not learned until the sentence frame is learned

Students often know a definition but hesitate because they do not know the grammar around the verb. Academic vocabulary therefore needs patterns. The patterns below are more useful than learning the verb alone.

  • argue that + clause: “The author argues that access matters more than speed.”
  • argue for / against + noun: “The report argues for gradual implementation.”
  • suggest that + clause: “The findings suggest that the effect is temporary.”
  • indicate that + clause: “The results indicate that demand is rising.”
  • distinguish A from B: “Distinguish correlation from causation.”
  • differentiate between A and B: “Differentiate between observation and inference.”
  • compare A with B: “Compare the new method with the existing procedure.”
  • contrast A with B: “Contrast the two explanations.”
  • relate A to B: “Relate the evidence to the claim.”
  • support + noun: “The data support the conclusion.”
  • substantiate + claim: “The study does not substantiate the universal claim.”
  • corroborate + account/result: “The second source corroborates the witness account.”
  • establish that + clause: “The evidence establishes that the groups differed.”

Leonie practises these as chunks because retrieval speed improves when grammar and meaning are stored together. Instead of retrieving correlate and then searching for a preposition, she retrieves correlate with as a usable frame. Instead of retrieving distinguish alone, she retrieves distinguish A from B. This reduces the working-memory cost of sentence construction.

Fifty sentence upgrades: turn vague verbs into exact reasoning

  • “The article says the policy failed.” → “The article argues that the policy failed.”
  • “The writer says this will happen.” → “The writer predicts this outcome.”
  • “The report says there may be a problem.” → “The report suggests a potential problem.”
  • “The results show a difference.” → “The results indicate a difference.”
  • “The experiment shows the effect clearly.” → “The experiment demonstrates the effect under the tested conditions.”

A seven-level mastery diagnostic for academic verbs

Level 1 — Recognition: the student understands the verb when it appears in a sentence. This is necessary but weak. Recognition can survive even when production fails.

Level 2 — Definition: the student can explain the verb in plain language. “Corroborate means support an account with independent evidence.” This checks conceptual understanding.

Level 3 — Pattern: the student can produce the normal grammar or collocation. “Correlate with”, “contribute to”, “distinguish A from B”, “argue that”. This makes the verb sentence-ready.

Level 4 — Discrimination: the student can explain the boundary with a nearby verb. Suggest versus demonstrate. Rebut versus refute. Assess versus evaluate. Adapt versus adopt. This is where misuse decreases.

Level 5 — Production: the student can use the verb naturally in an original sentence from English, Science, Humanities or Mathematics.

Level 6 — Delayed retrieval: the student can produce the verb from a reasoning cue after hours or days. “Independent support for an account” should retrieve corroborate without the word being visible.

Level 7 — Transfer under pressure: the student can select the correct verb during a timed essay or oral response when several alternatives are available. At this level the verb has become part of the student’s working academic language.

How teachers can use the list

Teach verbs in contrasts. Put suggest and demonstrate beside the same evidence and ask which claim the evidence earns. Put rebut and refute beside the same counterargument. Put assess and evaluate into a decision task. Students learn more from choosing between near-neighbours than from copying long definitions.

Use subject transfer deliberately. A Science teacher can reinforce observe, measure, quantify, replicate and establish. A Humanities teacher can reinforce cite, corroborate, challenge, reconcile and evaluate. An English teacher can reinforce argue, imply, interpret, qualify, rebut and synthesize. The words become stronger when students meet the same reasoning move under different subject surfaces.

Assess both meaning and use. A multiple-choice definition test may show recognition. A sentence repair tests selection. A meaning-to-word prompt tests retrieval. A paragraph task tests transfer. If the goal is active vocabulary, the assessment should not stop at recognition.

How parents can support academic verb growth

Parents do not need to teach all 100 verbs formally. One of the most useful habits is to ask, “What exactly is the writer doing here?” If a news article says “experts warn”, is the writer reporting, arguing, predicting or demonstrating? If a child says “the study proves it”, ask whether the study merely suggests, supports or establishes the conclusion. These small distinctions train evidential language naturally.

Encourage paraphrase when retrieval fails. If corroborate does not arrive, the student can say “support it with an independent source” and keep speaking. Afterwards, return to the target verb. Fluency should survive while precision is being built.

Final standard: the verb should reveal the reasoning move

The strongest student is not the one who uses the longest verb. It is the one who can choose a verb that matches the intellectual operation and the strength of the evidence. Suggest when the evidence is tentative. Demonstrate when the evidence genuinely shows. Corroborate when an independent source strengthens an account. Qualify when a claim exceeds its scope. Rebut when responding to an argument. Refute only when the response actually defeats the claim. Synthesize when several sources become one new understanding.

Once these distinctions become automatic, academic writing changes. The student no longer hunts for impressive vocabulary after the idea is written. The vocabulary helps shape the idea itself.
