Top 100 Vocabulary for Visiting and Touring Korea | Paju
Welcome to Paju! A bookshop visit can turn into a small adventure: a cover catches your eye, a story draws you in, and suddenly you have a new author to follow. These 100 English words and expressions help you browse books, discuss stories and understand the work behind a finished publication.
Paju Book City is the centre of this guide. The list moves from easy bookshop questions to publishing, storytelling, book design and literary events. It is especially useful for English-speaking and Chinese-speaking readers who want to turn a visit into a reading habit.
How to use this guide / 使用说明: “Top 100” is our teaching selection, not a measured frequency or search-volume ranking. English sound cues are approximate; CAPITAL letters mark stressed syllables. They are not IPA and do not represent every accent. Chinese meanings show the intended context. Examples and model conversations are imagined learning situations, not reports of actual visits or guarantees of services.
Your city name / 城市名称: Paju — 坡州 — 파주. Save the Korean name and your exact destination on your phone. English and Chinese can support learning, but neither should be assumed to be understood everywhere.

A little Paju context / 城市背景
Paju Book City grew from a publishing-sector initiative conceived in the late 1980s. It brings publishing and cultural activity together in a purpose-built district. Its official introduction emphasises the relationship between books, architecture and nature: the place invites you to look at both the publications and the spaces around them.
The Asia Publishing and Culture Information Center and Forest of Wisdom are important starting points for a book-focused visit. Forest of Wisdom is associated with donated books and shared reading. Do not assume that books available for reading on site can be borrowed or bought; ask about the rules for the particular collection.
Places to explore and questions to ask / 参观与实用问题
Start with the Book City visitor information and select a manageable route. A publishing house is a working business, so access to offices, studios or production areas should be confirmed rather than assumed. Public reading spaces and bookshops make useful starting points.
At Forest of Wisdom or another reading room, ask where to return the book after reading. Book browsing is a pleasure in its own right: read a title page, notice an illustrator's work and spend time with a picture book even if you cannot yet read every sentence.
In a bookshop, compare a hardback and paperback edition. Check the copyright page, publication date and translator before choosing. The ISBN is useful when you want to find precisely the same edition later.
For an author reading, literary talk or book signing, check the current programme, event language and registration requirements. A book café, reading room and library can have different purchasing or borrowing rules. Use library loan and due date only where borrowing is actually offered.
A short conversation / 简短对话
Visitor: Could you give me a book recommendation? / 游客:您能推荐一本书吗?
Bookseller: What kind of book do you enjoy: fiction, nonfiction or a graphic novel? / 书店店员:您喜欢哪类书:虚构作品、非虚构作品,还是图像小说?
Turn the visit into a paragraph / 把旅行写成一段话
Model paragraph — an imagined visit: I spent an afternoon book browsing in Paju. A picture book caught my attention because of its imagery and unusual typeface. I checked the title page to find the illustrator, then compared the hardback with the paperback. Before leaving, I saved a reading list and chose a novel for the journey home.
中文参考: 我在坡州花了一个下午随意翻阅书籍。一本图画书以其画面意象和独特字体吸引了我。我查看扉页,找到插画师的名字,然后比较精装版与平装版。离开前,我保存了一份阅读书单,选了一本小说在回程读。
Use this as a structure: a place, a specific observation and a thought. Replace the details with your own experience. You can extend it in the South Korea writing workbook.
Learn, compare and use the words / 学习与练习
Choose precisely: A blurb is a short promotional description that encourages interest. A synopsis summarises the content. A synopsis may reveal the ending, so ask for one ‘without spoilers’ when you want to preserve the surprise.
Build a sentence: Choose protagonist. Start with: ‘The protagonist makes a choice.’ Add the setting: ‘In a small town, the protagonist makes a difficult choice.’ Then add the theme: ‘In a small town, the protagonist makes a difficult choice that tests the book's theme of friendship.’ Avoid adding an invented plot detail to a review of a real book. For the wider learning approach, continue to The Fencing Method for Vocabulary.
A small task: For a family or classroom task, compare two editions of one book. Record the publisher, translator, publication date, typeface and trim size where available. Then write a short book review based on a passage you actually read, rather than rewriting the blurb.
Recall tomorrow: Cover the English headwords and use the Chinese meanings to recall five entries. Say one question aloud without looking, then write a fresh sentence. Check whether the sentence shows the intended meaning; remembering a translation is only the first step.
For useful courtesy expressions, use the shared Korean phrase kit in the Busan guide. To study Korean sounds, sentence patterns and conversation more systematically, continue to How to Master Korean Correctly.
Questions before you go / 出发前的小问题
Are these English or Korean vocabulary entries?
They are English words and expressions for describing your visit, with simplified Chinese support. The Korean city name helps identify the place; the list is not a Korean-language course.
Can I borrow any book I see in Book City?
No. Ask the venue about its collection. Some books are for reading on site, others are sold, and borrowing services may have registration conditions.
Must I learn all 100 words before travelling?
No. Choose ten entries for your first planned activity and practise a few questions. Return to the specialised groups when you have a real reason to use them.
