Top 100 Vocabulary for Visiting and Touring Korea | Suncheon
Welcome to Suncheon! A garden walk becomes richer when you can name what you notice: a new shoot, a carefully shaped hedge or a bird feeding beside a waterway. These 100 English words and expressions connect gardens, plant learning and wetland observation, with simplified Chinese meanings and bilingual examples.
This Suncheon guide centres on the National Garden and the Bay Wetland. They are different destinations and different environments: one includes designed planting, while the other invites careful observation of a natural ecosystem. Start with plant label, flowering period and binoculars; explore the botanical terms when you are curious.
How to use this guide / 使用说明: “Top 100” is our teaching selection, not a measured frequency or search-volume ranking. English sound cues are approximate; CAPITAL letters mark stressed syllables. They are not IPA and do not represent every accent. Chinese meanings show the intended context. Examples and model conversations are imagined learning situations, not reports of actual visits or guarantees of services.
Your city name / 城市名称: Suncheon — 顺天 — 순천. Save the Korean name and your exact destination on your phone. English and Chinese can support learning, but neither should be assumed to be understood everywhere.

Start with a garden walk / 先从花园散步开始: Learn plant label, common name, flowering period, field guide and binoculars. Practise three questions:
“Where can I find the plant label?” / “在哪里可以找到植物标签?”
“What is this plant’s common name?” / “这种植物的俗名是什么?”
“When is its flowering period?” / “它的花期是什么时候?”
For birdwatching, keep a field guide nearby and observe through binoculars without approaching the birds. The plant-science groups are there when you want to explore further.

A little Suncheon context / 城市背景
Suncheonman National Garden developed in connection with the 2013 garden expo and became Korea's first designated national garden in 2015. The site also hosted the 2023 international garden expo. Its themed gardens make a useful place to compare design choices, from formal arrangements to planting that encourages visitors to notice scent, texture or seasonal change.
Suncheonman Bay Wetland offers a different setting for learning about coastal habitats. A tidal creek and intertidal zone change with water levels, and the birds using a feeding ground vary with season and conditions. Connect the garden visit with the wetland visit through questions about plant diversity and habitat, rather than assuming that the same plants and facilities occur in both places.
Places to explore and questions to ask / 参观与实用问题
At the National Garden, choose a few themed areas and leave time to look closely. Read a plant label for its common name and scientific name. A cultivar identifies a cultivated selection; it is not simply another word for genus. Ask about the flowering period if you hope to see a particular display.
For the garden's educational activities, check the current programme, language and booking requirements. The tool entries describe gardening work, not equipment visitors may automatically use. Touch plants or take part in an activity only where the venue permits it.
At the Bay Wetland, stay on the authorised visitor route and observe from a distance. Binoculars and a field guide can help you distinguish a heron, egret or crane. The examples are imagined observations; they do not promise that any named bird will be present during your trip.
Keep a small bird count of clear sightings. Record the date, viewing place and identification you are confident about. If you are uncertain, write ‘unidentified bird’ rather than converting a guess into a record. Avoid disturbing feeding or nesting animals.
Compare a designed flowerbed with a natural habitat. A garden may be arranged for colour and access; an intertidal zone responds to water, sediment and living organisms. Both can be beautiful, and the different vocabulary helps you describe why.
A short conversation / 简短对话
Visitor: When is the flowering period? / 游客:花期是什么时候?
Companion: Let's photograph the plant label and compare it with our field guide. / 同伴:我们拍下植物标签,再与野外图鉴比较吧。
Turn the visit into a paragraph / 把旅行写成一段话
Model paragraph — an imagined visit: In Suncheon, I first read a plant label in the garden. The flowering period helped explain why one shrub had buds while another had blossom. Later, binoculars helped me watch an egret near a tidal creek. I recorded only clear sightings in my bird count and left the wetland with new questions about habitat.
中文参考: 在顺天,我先阅读了花园里的植物标签。花期帮助解释为什么一株灌木有花蕾,另一株已开花。后来,双筒望远镜帮助我观察潮汐水道旁的一只白鹭。我在鸟类计数中只记录看清的个体,离开湿地时带着新的生境问题。
Use this as a structure: a place, a specific observation and a thought. Replace the details with your own experience. You can extend it in the South Korea writing workbook.
Learn, compare and use the words / 学习与练习
Choose precisely: An annual plant usually completes its life cycle in one growing season; a perennial plant lives for more than two years. A plant flowering once during your visit does not tell you its life cycle. Check the label or a reliable plant reference.
Build a sentence: Choose plant label. Start with: ‘I read the plant label.’ Add information: ‘The plant label gave the common name.’ Then explain its use: ‘The plant label gave the common name and scientific name, which helped me find the plant in a field guide.’ Keep the name exactly as the source records it. For the wider learning approach, continue to The Fencing Method for Vocabulary.
A small task: For a family or classroom task, choose three plants you can identify from labels. Record a visible feature of each leaf, stem or bud. Compare the garden observations with a wetland observation, and explain which details you saw yourself and which you learned from a sign.
Recall tomorrow: Cover the English headwords and use the Chinese meanings to recall five entries. Say one question aloud without looking, then write a fresh sentence. Check whether the sentence shows the intended meaning; remembering a translation is only the first step.
For useful courtesy expressions, use the shared Korean phrase kit in the Busan guide. To study Korean sounds, sentence patterns and conversation more systematically, continue to How to Master Korean Correctly.
Questions before you go / 出发前的小问题
Are these English or Korean vocabulary entries?
They are English words and expressions for describing your visit, with simplified Chinese support. The Korean city name helps identify the place; the list is not a Korean-language course.
Will I see every plant and bird in this list?
No. This is a learning selection covering garden and wetland concepts. Plants, displays and bird sightings depend on the location, season and conditions; use current venue information to plan your visit.
Must I learn all 100 words before travelling?
No. Choose ten entries for your first planned activity and practise a few questions. Return to the specialised groups when you have a real reason to use them.
