Cambridge travel vocabulary for visiting and touring the UK: 100 useful English words and expressions with British-English pronunciation, English meanings, Simplified Chinese translations and bilingual example sentences.
Cambridge rewards a gentle pace: watch a punt move across the water, read one museum label carefully, and pause outside a college doorway to ask what lies beyond it.
This Cambridge English–Chinese guide connects city-specific English vocabulary with college visits, the River Cam, chapel traditions and museum learning. The Chinese text helps you check meaning and write about your visit; the English explanations help you choose the right word when speaking.
剑桥旅行英语词汇:100项词语和表达,包含英语释义、英式英语音标、简体中文及双语例句。旅行时,不必一次记住所有词;挑选今天会用到的几项,先练一句问题,再听真实回答。
Make this city your next English classroom! This guide focuses on botanic gardens, plant life, scientific discovery and riverside visits. Some terms are specialist words you may meet on signs, labels or tours; start with ten that match your plans, then try the bilingual examples aloud. For general travel language, the Edinburgh guide covers tickets, transport, hotels, meals and everyday help.
本篇重点是植物园、植物生命、科学发现与河畔游览。部分词是参观说明牌、展品标签或导览时会遇到的专业词。先选十个符合行程的词,读读双语例句,再慢慢扩展。通用交通、住宿与餐饮词汇可参阅爱丁堡篇。
Pronunciation key: / / contains IPA; ˈ marks main stress and ˌ marks secondary stress. These are broad British-English models. Local accents and proper-name pronunciations can vary. The 100 entries include words, useful phrases and local names; choose a themed section that fits your visit.

Cambridge: history you can see
One university, many communities
The University of Cambridge dates its foundation to 1209 and describes a collegiate institution made up of constituent colleges. University names the wider institution; college identifies a community within it. A visitor should not assume that every college has the same admission arrangements or that a university building is a public attraction.
Official reading: University of Cambridge: at a glance.
The river offers another way to read the city
Visit Cambridge describes punting on the River Cam as a visitor activity and links college visits, walking and cycling routes. Punting uses a pole; rowing uses oars. A chauffeured trip and self-hire are different arrangements. Ask which you are booking, who operates the boat and where you should meet.
Official reading: Visit Cambridge: things to see and do.
A collection is more than a famous façade
The Fitzwilliam Museum’s official visitor page provides current planning and access information. Choose a gallery that interests you and give each object a little time. Antiquities, manuscript, collection and label help you ask what an object is, when it was made and how its meaning has been interpreted. A written label may also make uncertainty visible.
Official reading: Fitzwilliam Museum: plan your visit.
A chapel can have different visiting purposes
Cambridge visitor information connects King’s College Chapel with choral traditions. Sightseeing and attending a religious service are different purposes. Ask about the actual date and activity, follow the venue’s guidance, and leave photography decisions to its current rules. Enjoying the singing also means respecting those using the space for worship.
Official reading: Visit Cambridge: chapels and choral traditions.
A relaxed Cambridge learning route
Begin with a college visit that has confirmed visitor access. Add a museum or a riverside walk according to the group’s interests. If you book punting, treat the meeting point and time as a fixed part of the plan. A botanic garden visit adds a different subject, so leave enough time for its journey and entrance. Cross carefully and keep pedestrian walking separate from cycle lanes.

Three conversations to practise
These original practice scripts are questions you can adapt. They do not establish opening arrangements, admission rights or a promised answer from a venue.
Examining a scientific exhibit
Traveller: What can we see through this microscope? How was the instrument’s calibration checked? What does the uncertainty range tell us?
游客:通过这台显微镜可以看到什么?这台仪器的校准如何核查?不确定度范围说明了什么?
In the botanical garden
Traveller: Is this succulent a perennial? Which part stores water? What conditions does it need for germination?
游客:这种多肉植物是多年生植物吗?哪部分储存水?它的种子萌发需要什么条件?
Before a river outing
Traveller: Is this a chauffeured trip or self-hire? How is the pole used? Where is the mooring for our return?
游客:这是专人撑船行程还是自助租船?长篙如何使用?我们返回时的系泊点在哪里?
English–Chinese distinctions that matter in Cambridge
Germination is a seed beginning to grow; pollination is pollen transfer, not a seed sprouting. Annual, biennial and perennial describe different plant life cycles. Deciduous plants shed leaves seasonally; evergreen plants retain green leaves through the year, though individual leaves can still fall. For measurements, precision concerns agreement between repeated results, while accuracy concerns closeness to the correct or accepted value.
germination是种子开始萌发,pollination是传粉,两者不同。annual、biennial和perennial分别指一年生、二年生和多年生植物。deciduous指季节性落叶,evergreen指全年保持绿叶,但单片叶子仍会脱落。测量中的precision强调重复结果彼此接近,accuracy强调结果接近正确值或认可值。

Germination /ˌdʒɜːmɪˈneɪʃən/ has its main stress on /ˈneɪ/. In microscope /ˈmaɪkrəskəʊp/, stress the first syllable. Choir /ˈkwaɪə/ starts with /kw/. Try “What conditions help germination?” and “May we hear the choir?” Keep each question clear, then listen to the answer.
Follow a plant process without mixing up its stages
In a garden, small things can look similar while doing different jobs. Instead of memorising pollen and seed as two translations, ask what each does in the explanation.
在花园里,一些小东西看起来相近,却承担不同作用。不要只把pollen和seed背成两个译词;要问它们在解释中各做什么。
A worked language example
Imagine a fictional teaching card about a flowering plant. It shows pollen being transferred to a flower’s stigma, then fertilisation and seed development as later stages. “The bee carries seeds to the stigma” confuses the materials and the process. A better sentence for this card is “The bee transfers pollen between flowers.” Pollination and seed dispersal are different processes. A seed contains a developing plant; a pollen grain is not a tiny seed. Use the card’s information rather than assuming that every plant is pollinated by bees.
想象一张介绍开花植物的虚构教学卡。它先显示花粉被转移到花的柱头,再显示之后的受精和种子发育。“蜜蜂把种子带到柱头”混淆了材料与过程。针对这张卡,更好的句子是:“蜜蜂在花朵之间转移花粉。”传粉与种子传播是不同过程。种子含有发育中的植物;花粉粒并不是小种子。依据卡片的信息解释,不要假定所有植物都由蜜蜂传粉。
Try it without the examples
Explain pollen and seed without looking. Write two questions: one about pollination and one about how a seed travels. If they ask about the same process, revisit the definitions before adding another botanical term.
不看词表,解释pollen和seed。再写两个问题:一个关于传粉,一个关于种子如何传播。如果两问实际问的是同一过程,先回看释义,再增加新的植物学术语。
Check the distinction with Kew: pollination and seed dispersal, then continue to the five-word practice. For a broader learning sequence, use How to Improve Vocabulary.
Five words, five practical tasks
Choose germination, pollination, herbarium, microscope and uncertainty. Describe a seed beginning to grow, explain pollen transfer, ask how dried plants are preserved, identify a scientific viewing tool and discuss why a measurement is given with a range.
- Before the visit: select five entries and turn each into a question.
- During the visit: connect a word with a real sign, object or conversation.
- After the visit: close the list and explain the experience from memory.
- The following day: retrieve yesterday’s words before adding new ones.
If you travel with family, let one person ask, another listen and a third check what was understood. Swap roles at the next stop. If you practise alone, record a question and listen for the unclear part. A short, enjoyable session is easier to repeat than a long memorisation challenge.
家庭旅行时,可以一人提问、一人听回答、另一人确认理解,再在下一站交换角色。独自练习时,录一句问题,听听哪里不清楚。轻松的短练习更容易每天坚持。
A short Cambridge travel-writing model
This is an original educational writing model, not a report of a documented eduKate visit.
We asked about visitor access before entering the college court. Beside the Cam, a punt moved slowly past, guided by a long pole. In the museum, a label gave a range of dates rather than a single year. That small detail reminded us that learning begins with careful attention, even on holiday.
进入学院庭院前,我们先询问游客开放情况。在康河边,一条平底船在长篙引导下缓缓经过。博物馆里,一块说明牌给出年代范围,而不是单独某一年。这个小细节提醒我们,即使在度假时,学习也从细心观察开始。
Write your own paragraph with one place, one observed detail and one conversation. Use a precise noun instead of repeatedly saying interesting place. Distinguish what you saw from what a guide told you. When translating, preserve the location, sequence and uncertainty; do not turn a possible interpretation into a confirmed fact.
A visitor checklist written in useful English
Choose plants, scientific objects or a riverside outing as the focus of your Cambridge day. At the Cambridge University Botanic Garden, pick a small group of plants to describe using perennial, succulent or deciduous. At a museum, one instrument can lead to a question about measurement or calibration. If you add a boat trip, check whether it is chauffeured or self-hire before booking, and leave enough time to enjoy each activity.
Before a river outing, ask whether the booking is chauffeured or self-hire, where the mooring is and what the return arrangement involves. These words describe different responsibilities, so repeat the answer in your own words before deciding. For a college visit, keep visitor access separate from a supervision: the latter is an academic teaching session, rather than a sightseeing service.
河上出游前,询问预订是由专人撑船还是自行租用、系泊点在哪里,以及如何归还或返回。这些词涉及不同责任,作决定前先用自己的话复述答复。参观学院也要与supervision分开:后者是学术辅导课,不是观光服务。
Use the garden’s current visitor information and map to plan a route suited to your group. For a college or choral service, check the specific visitor arrangements and follow the staff’s instructions. At a boat departure point, ask about boarding, the mooring location and the return arrangements. A riverside path and access inside a college are separate questions.
根据植物园最新游客信息和地图,安排适合同行者的路线。参观学院或参加圣歌礼拜时,确认具体游客安排,并遵循工作人员指引。到船只出发点后,询问登船方式、系泊位置和返回安排。河边步道能否通行,与能否进入学院,需要分别确认。
Frequently asked questions
Where is Cambridge?
Cambridge is in England, which is part of the United Kingdom. Use the full city and country name when a booking or map could be ambiguous.
Are all entries single words?
The 100 numbered entries include single words, useful expressions and local names. Multiword terms are included where travellers encounter a specific idea as a practical unit.
How was this city’s vocabulary selected?
This list follows the city’s own subjects and experiences. The numbered entries are checked against the other UK lists, and the examples practise the particular meanings taught here. General travel language is used where a conversation needs it.
How should Chinese-speaking adults use the list?
Read the Chinese meaning, say the English example aloud and adapt it to a real need. Ask the question, check the answer and use the word again afterwards. The translations are context-specific rather than exhaustive dictionary definitions.
Can I use this for family learning or travel writing?
Yes. Choose a small set before the visit, discuss a real observation afterwards and write a short paragraph. English-speaking learners can use the Chinese sentences to compare meaning and sequence.
Where should I check current visitor arrangements?
Use the official attraction, destination and transport sources. This guide prepares your language; their current notices establish opening times, closures, prices, tour access and booking conditions.
