Top 100 Vocabulary for Visiting and Touring Korea | Geoje
Welcome to Geoje. This guide uses one of the island’s most important historical sites—the Geoje P.O.W. Camp Historic Park—to teach the language of captivity, camp administration, prisoner exchange, repatriation, testimony, memorial practice and historical evidence. The subject is serious, so the writing stays factual, clear and respectful.
VISITKOREA describes the park as standing on the site of South Korea’s largest prisoner-of-war camp during the Korean War, which held North Korean and Chinese prisoners captured by South Korean and United Nations forces. The exhibition presents the camp through educational displays, reconstructed spaces and wartime artifacts. These 100 English words are paired with simplified Chinese meanings and bilingual examples for careful historical learning.
How to use this guide / 使用说明: Historical labels such as anti-communist prisoner and communist prisoner describe documented factions within the camp context; they are not endorsements. “Top 100” is our teaching selection, not a frequency ranking. Where interpretations differ, use museum labels, archival documents and identified sources rather than guessing motives.

Why Geoje’s POW history needs precise vocabulary
The Geoje camp was not simply one fenced area. Large prisoner populations, multiple compounds, political divisions, security incidents and the later dispute over repatriation made the camp a complicated part of Korean War history. Precision matters because words such as internment, exchange, repatriation and release describe different processes.
A visitor should also separate an original object from a reconstruction. A fence remnant, identification card or archival map is evidence from the period; a reconstructed barracks or diorama is an interpretive tool designed to help visitors understand the site. Both can be valuable, but they answer different questions.
Five questions to ask / 五个实用问题
- Is this object original or reconstructed? / 这件物品是原件还是复原品?
- Which document identifies this compound or prisoner group? / 哪份文件确认了这个营区或战俘群体?
- How does the museum explain the dispute over repatriation? / 博物馆怎样解释战俘遣返争议?
- What evidence supports this camp layout? / 哪些证据支持这个营区布局?
- How should visitors behave in this memorial area? / 游客在这个纪念区域应该怎样保持尊重?
Write from evidence, not spectacle / 从证据写历史
Model paragraph — an imagined museum visit: At Geoje, the reconstructed barracks first gave me a sense of scale, but the archival camp map changed the way I understood the site. The compounds were separate, controlled spaces, and the records showed that prisoners did not all share the same political position. A later exhibition on prisoner exchange made the word repatriation feel less simple than I expected. The strongest part of the visit was learning to distinguish a dramatic story from a documented claim.
中文参考: 在巨济,复原营房首先让我感受到战俘营的规模,但真正改变我理解的是档案地图。不同营区是彼此分开的受控空间,记录也显示战俘并非拥有相同政治立场。后来关于战俘交换的展览,又让我发现“遣返”这个词比想象中复杂。最重要的收获,是学会区分戏剧化故事与有文件支持的历史陈述。
