Read the Russian writing and transliteration
Russian uses the Cyrillic alphabet. The transliteration column provides a consistent way to connect the printed letters with Latin letters; it is not a phonetic pronunciation guide. It does not mark stress. Listen to a reliable Russian recording or a speaker when practising pronunciation.
In this guide, zh represents ж, kh represents х, ts represents ц, ch represents ч, sh represents ш and shch represents щ. Yo represents ё; yu represents ю; ya represents я. The mark ′ represents the soft sign ь, while ″ represents the hard sign ъ. These signs do not represent standalone vowels. Names may have different established English spellings from the letter-by-letter form.
The vocabulary entries usually give a naming form or an infinitive action. Russian endings change inside sentences. A full question below therefore may look different from a table entry. Learn the question as a useful unit, and keep the Russian spelling available when asking about a destination.
Five practical questions
You can begin politely with Извините (Izvinite), meaning “Excuse me”. These complete questions use sentence forms; the vocabulary bank often uses naming forms or infinitives.
| English question | Russian question | Transliteration |
|---|---|---|
| Is this exhibition in Petrozavodsk or on Kizhi Island? | Эта выставка находится в Петрозаводске или на острове Кижи? | Eta vystavka nakhoditsya v Petrozavodske ili na ostrove Kizhi? |
| When is the return sailing? | Когда обратный рейс? | Kogda obratnyy reys? |
| Which language is this text in? | На каком языке этот текст? | Na kakom yazyke etot tekst? |
| What is the pastry filling? | Какая начинка у этой выпечки? | Kakaya nachinka u etoy vypechki? |
| Who donated this sculpture? | Кто подарил эту скульптуру? | Kto podaril etu skul′pturu? |
Did you know? Kizhi has a city presence too
The Kizhi Museum describes exhibition spaces in Petrozavodsk as well as its museum on Kizhi Island. The island is in Lake Onega; a city exhibition and an island visit are different destinations. Checking the actual venue is therefore a useful language task before you plan any journey.
Put “city exhibition venue” beside the address in your notes. For an island trip, ask separately about the outward route, the return sailing and the arrangements for your date. Do not turn a historical museum description into a promise of transport availability. Clear place names and a confirmed return plan make a more practical starting point.
Look at the roof, then ask about the craft
UNESCO’s Kizhi Pogost description identifies two wooden churches and a wooden bell tower within an island ensemble. The buildings invite you to describe shape and material together. “Multi-domed timber church” gives you a starting expression; “roof tier” helps you break the outline into smaller parts.
Choose one documented image and follow the arrangement of the domes. Then ask how the roof covering or a timber element is maintained. A visual impression and a conservation explanation do different jobs in your paragraph. Use the museum’s account for repair history rather than inventing a story from the colour or apparent age of a piece of wood.
A language label can open a better question
This bank gives Russian expressions, including Russian names for the Karelian and Veps languages. Those entries are not translations into Karelian or Veps. When a regional text interests you, begin by identifying its language and the source of any translation.
A museum label, recording or published account can help you locate the cultural context of a story. Ask who recorded it and how it was translated. This is a friendly way to become more curious while staying precise: you can admire a story and still distinguish the narrator’s words, a translator’s choices and your own response.
Make food vocabulary a conversation
A kalitka offers a small, concrete subject for description. The expressions in this group let you ask about the shell, filling and edge without assuming every bakery uses the same recipe. Treat the table as a set of questions to investigate at the counter.
Imagine choosing a pastry and asking what is inside. Note the answer before describing it. If you are writing afterwards, connect two observed details: perhaps the shaped edge and the filling named by the bakery. Keep an ingredient claim tied to that particular item. The result is a useful food paragraph with a source you can identify.
Connect the waterfront with a museum visit
Lake Onega provides an orientation point for a Petrozavodsk itinerary. The National Museum of Karelia offers another setting for learning about the region. Instead of trying to summarise Karelia in a single sentence, choose a question that moves between the two: how does a regional map explain the landscape you are looking at?
For a waterfront artwork, start with its plaque if one is available. Record the title, artist or donor actually given there. Then describe how the object meets the view of the lake. This keeps a possible city-partnership story grounded in a source and gives your writing a clear movement from identification to observation.
Three models for your own sentences
These are imagined learning examples, not reports of a visit. Replace their details with observations and sources from your own study.
| Writing purpose | Imagined example |
|---|---|
| Planning | I checked whether the exhibition address referred to the city or to the island before choosing a route. |
| Observation | I followed the roof tiers in the photograph to describe the church’s multi-domed outline. |
| Question | At the bakery, I asked what filled the pastry before writing about its ingredients. |
Write a clear paragraph about Petrozavodsk
Choose one of the ten vocabulary groups and write an 80–120 word account. Begin with your location or the source you are using. Add two concrete details, then explain how they connect. Finish with a question you would like to investigate. You can do this with a verified photograph, museum page or map before travelling.
Use a simple checking routine: underline the expressions you learned, circle the claims that need a source, and check that your reader can picture the scene. Replace a broad adjective with a detail when possible. ‘Impressive’ tells us your reaction; naming the arrangement, material or mechanism tells us why you reacted that way.
For a comparison with Singapore, choose one shared task: crossing a river, caring for a collection, organising a performance or explaining a landscape. Describe the two examples separately before comparing them. Do not assume they have the same history, climate, scale or visitor rules.
Continue with Education OS for the wider learning pathway, Singapore City OS for city connections, and Singapore Museum, SMU and Arts School District OS for a local connection between collections, art and study.
Before, during and after your visit
Before: choose five entries, locate the relevant destination and check its official visitor information. Practise one question aloud. Save the Russian spelling of the place name separately so that it remains easy to find.
During: notice one detail, read the available explanation and make a brief note. Keep observation and inference separate. Follow the venue’s current access, photography and visitor instructions.
After: recall the five expressions without looking, then check the list. Write three sentences that use them accurately. Return to your question and see whether the visit answered it or opened a better one.
Frequently asked questions
Must I learn all 100 expressions? No. Begin with five that fit the scene you want to explore. Recall them later and add another small group when the first feels familiar.
Are these all single words? No. The bank includes names and phrases because a complete expression often carries a more useful meaning for a visitor than an isolated noun.
Can I use the transliteration for pronunciation? Use it to connect letters. Stress, vowel reduction and connected speech need a pronunciation resource or speaker.
Does the guide confirm opening hours and availability? No. Check the official sources for the particular day, route, exhibition or performance you are planning.
How does this help English writing? It gives you concrete nouns and actions that support clearer description. The next step is to connect those details into sentences with evidence and purpose.
