eduKateSG · WORDS FOR A WORLD OF DISCOVERIES
Where shall we explore today?
A glass workshop in Japan, a waterfront in Canada, a garden in China—every place gives us something new to notice and a reason to find the right words. Welcome! This directory brings the Top 100 Vocabulary for Visiting and Touring city guides together so you can spend less time searching and more time learning.
Choose a destination you are curious about. Open its guide, pick five useful words or expressions, and try them in one small scene. You can learn from a real visit, a photograph or an imagined journey. A little curiosity is a lovely place to begin.
Find your destination
Choose a region, then open a country or destination collection. Places are listed alphabetically within each collection. Vietnam and the Philippines each have their own list here, including guides originally published in the South East Asia series.

How a place helps a word make sense
Did you know that one ordinary scene can give you several useful kinds of language? At a station, you might name a platform, describe a crowded entrance and explain why you need to transfer. A place gives the words a job.
Begin with what you can point to or describe. Then add an action, a detail and a reason. “We crossed the bridge” becomes “We crossed the narrow bridge to reach the museum.” Each addition should help your reader picture the scene.
The guides focus on different local themes. Some entries are place names, some are single words and some are useful expressions. Treat each entry as a tool to understand and use, rather than a phrase to squeeze into every paragraph.
Choose an easy starting point
Try three entries from a guide. Can you explain each one in plain English? Can you make a sentence of your own? Your answers show which step will help today.
- “These words are new to me.” Choose three to five concrete entries. Connect each to an object, picture or clear example.
- “I recognise the words, but I get stuck using them.” Say a short sentence aloud, then write it. Keep the meaning clear before adding detail.
- “I can already use them.” Compare two nearby meanings, explain a choice or describe a fresh scene without the list.
Choose the route that makes the next task manageable. You can move on as soon as your own work shows you are ready.
A cheerful ten-minute word adventure
- Choose one scene. Try arriving at a station, examining an object or describing a meal. Keep the task small.
- Pick five entries. Read their meanings and examples. Explain each in your own words.
- Build a clear sentence. Begin with who did what. Add one useful detail.
- Close the guide. Say or write the words you remember. Reopen it to check.
- Make something yours. Write three connected sentences, ask a practical question or give a short spoken description.
This uses the eduKate Fencing Method: start within a small, clear boundary, then add one new difficulty when the earlier step feels secure. Five well-used entries are a useful beginning.
One sentence, then one useful detail
Starting sentence: “We waited at the station.”
Add a precise place: “We waited on the platform.”
Add a reason: “We waited on the platform because our train had not arrived.”
Notice what changed: the place became clearer, then the reason became clearer. You do not need an impressive adjective in every sentence. Choose the detail that helps someone understand.
For a writing task, imagine a small change of plan. In a short paragraph, show what you expected, what happened, what you decided and how the scene ended. Label an imagined journey as fiction.
How do you know the words are becoming yours?
- Meaning: Can you explain the entry without copying its definition?
- Choice: Does it fit the scene, or would a simpler word work better?
- Sentence: Have you used the word with the right grammar and a natural word partner?
- Recall: Can you remember it when the guide is closed?
- Transfer: Can you use it in another suitable scene?
If one step feels shaky, return to that step. If the meaning is unclear, look at another example. If a sentence sounds awkward, shorten it and try again. If recall is difficult, practise a smaller set before adding more.
Keep your first attempt and your revision. A clearer sentence, a better question or a more precise description is progress you can see. Revisit a few words another day and mix them with words from a second destination.
A few friendly questions
Do I need to learn all 100 entries at once?
No. Start with a handful that fit one scene. Return for another small set when you can explain and use the first one.
Can I use the guides without travelling?
Absolutely. Work from a labelled photograph, a reading passage or a checked source. Say “The photograph shows…” when you are describing a picture. An imagined journey works well for fiction.
Can parents and children learn together?
Yes. Take turns describing one detail or asking one question. Offer a prompt when needed, then let the learner make the final sentence independently.
Are these complete foreign-language courses?
The series supports vocabulary and English learning through destinations. Some guides also include Chinese meanings, Mandarin or pronunciation support; check the individual guide to see what it provides.
Is every place listed here a city?
Most are cities, while some are islands or other destinations. The collection follows the places covered by the published guides.
Can I use the guides as current travel information?
Use them for learning. Before an actual visit, check current entry rules, access, opening hours and safety information with the relevant official sources.
Where would you like to go next?

- Visit the English Learning Hub for reading, writing and speaking.

Next to do: cities and countries
Editorial planning queue — check for newly published guides before starting. Where shall we explore next? This working worldwide shortlist contains 282 cities and destination municipalities to check for future Visiting and Touring vocabulary guides.
Inventory checked: 7 October 2026 (Singapore). These candidates were compared with 964 published guides in the series, including the older “Visting” spelling and alternative city names. The list is a dated research snapshot, not an automatic tracker or a complete list of every missing city.
Start with a country that does not yet have a collection, or fill an important city gap in an existing branch. Before writing each batch, check for a newly published guide and any planned work in the country branch. After publication, remove the city from this queue and add its live guide to the directory above. City names below are intentionally not links to unwritten articles.

Research notes and publishing checks
The starting names and country or territory assignments come from the GeoNames geographical data extracts and country information file. We selected uncovered capitals and larger settlements, limited this first queue to three entries per country or territory, omitted selected neighbourhood records, and checked alternative names against the published series. Some separate municipalities belong to a larger metropolitan area; check the intended scope before commissioning their guides.
GeoNames population fields help select candidates but have different reference dates and settlement boundaries; this is not a current population ranking, tourism popularity ranking or travel recommendation. Country and territory groupings are browsing labels, not a statement about sovereignty. For an actual visit, check current official travel and access information separately.
