Nepali to English Translation | Devanagari, Honorifics, Grammar and Examples

A student works through handwritten notes at a desk with open books, stacked textbooks and a laptop.

To translate Nepali to English, read the complete sentence, find its main verb, and identify who is speaking, who is addressed, and when the action occurs. Nepali is commonly written in Devanagari and often uses subject–object–verb order. Its pronouns and verb endings express different levels of respect that English “you” and “he” or “she” do not reproduce directly. A good English translation can change sentence order while keeping the same meaning, tone and practical consequences.

If you need Nepali to English translation for a text message, school notice, travel sign, document or business email, a reputable translation tool can provide a useful initial draft. Review the draft against the source. A short form like भोलि means tomorrow, but a mistake involving छैन, नगर्नुहोस्, मात्र or यदि can change absence, prohibition, restriction or a condition. Fluent English is not reliable if it loses one of these.

This guide explains how to translate Nepali, recognize the Devanagari script, interpret respectful pronouns such as तिमी, तपाईं and उहाँ, understand past and future actions, and work with Nepali calendar dates. It includes original teaching examples and practical workflows for images, webpages, Word documents and PDFs. These examples are not certified translations of actual official records.

Find the information you need

Nepali to English: the quick seven-step method

Read the complete Nepali sentence, including the verb near the end. Identify the subject and object. Then locate any person marker, time expression, conditional phrase or negative. Write a plain English sentence reflecting the same event, then compare the factual details before polishing.

For example, मैले हिजो पत्र पठाएँ। naturally means “I sent the letter yesterday,” or “I sent a letter yesterday” when the letter is not already specified. The subject is the sender, the action is sending, and हिजो fixes the past date reference. English does not have to preserve the Nepali order to be faithful.

Compare म भोलि पत्र पठाउनेछु।, “I’ll send the letter tomorrow.” This describes planned future sending. A reader who is waiting for an application or receipt needs to know that dispatch has not been reported as complete.

Write down six answers for every consequential sentence: who acted, what occurred, what or whom it affected, when it occurred, whether it was conditional or negative, and how certain the statement was. When the source does not settle one of those, mark it as unknown rather than inventing a person, place or official outcome.

A good translation is ultimately a decision aid. A parent, customer or employee should understand what the original writer asked them to do. If the English says a refund was approved when the Nepali says it is being examined, the translation has failed even if every adjective sounds elegant.

Nepali and Devanagari: what your source actually says

Nepali is commonly written in the Devanagari script, which is also used by several other South Asian languages. A shared script does not mean every word or grammar rule is the same as Hindi or Marathi. Select Nepali in your translator rather than trusting visual script identification alone.

Devanagari consists of consonants, independent vowels and dependent vowel marks. Consonants can form conjuncts. A blurry photographed sign may hide one mark or merge characters. A system may then translate an incorrect extracted word with perfect fluency.

The Unicode Standard’s South and Central Asian scripts discussion explains digital encoding for Devanagari and other South Asian scripts. This matters when text displays correctly but copying the PDF yields a damaged sequence.

Before using camera translation, capture a complete line with adequate lighting and verify the recognised Nepali. An isolated fragment may be ambiguous even with perfect character recognition. For official names, retain the source spelling and use a verified registered English spelling rather than making up a new transliteration.

Identify Nepali, not just any Devanagari language

A screenshot in Devanagari could be Nepali, Hindi or another language. The characters alone do not establish the vocabulary and grammar. If a translation tool autodetects incorrectly, the English may be coherent but not represent the source text.

Nepali and Hindi share many terms, but their pronoun, verb and institutional patterns are not identical. In particular, Nepali’s levels of social address are not safely decoded through a generic Hindi pronoun chart. Use resources designed for Nepali.

The University of Wisconsin Nepali pronouns lesson gives the common first-, second- and third-person forms and their levels of respect. It is useful for diagnosing why two apparently similar English “you” sentences use different Nepali verb endings.

For technical or official vocabulary, determine where the source was issued. A Nepalese school stage or government department may not have an exact equivalent in an English-speaking system. Preserve the institution’s real identity and describe its function where an established English label is unavailable.

Nepali word order and verb position

Nepali commonly uses subject–object–verb order. म किताब पढ्छु। means “I read a book” or “I study,” depending on the object and context. English generally places read after “I” and before “book,” while Nepali puts the verb at the end.

The visible position of a noun does not automatically prove its grammatical role. Postpositions and case forms indicate recipients, agents or other relationships. Before translating a sentence with several names, identify who performs the action and who receives its outcome.

For a school letter, the parent may sign a form, a student may submit it, and a teacher may receive it. If you mix those roles, a reader may follow an entirely different instruction. Sketch a quick working diagram with actor, object and recipient.

Natural English is allowed to reorganize the sequence. The question is whether the same people did the same things, not whether the first and last words appear in identical positions.

ले and an agent of a completed action

Nepali uses ले in several grammatical contexts, including agent marking in certain perfective transitive clauses. रामले किताब पढ्यो। can mean “Ram read the book.” The form on Ram helps identify the person who read, not the book itself.

A literal English word “by” is not required for every occurrence. You can often write a natural active sentence: “Ram read the book.” The structure of the Nepali explains the relationship; it does not oblige you to mirror the source morphology.

The marker may also occur in instrumental contexts. Translate the full verb phrase rather than choosing one English preposition mechanically.

If a document states who signed, sent or paid for something, verify the agent marker and event completion carefully. Misidentifying the agent can assign responsibility to the wrong person.

लाई and the recipient

The form लाई often marks a recipient or another affected participant. सीतालाई किताब देऊ। can mean “Give Sita the book” in a suitable familiar imperative context. Sita receives the item; she is not the speaker who is ordered to give it.

मलाई पानी चाहिन्छ। means “I need water” or “I’d like water,” depending on the conversational situation. English commonly makes the person experiencing the need the subject even though the Nepali construction is organized differently.

Do not use an awkward formula such as “To me water needs” as the finished English. Word-by-word notes can help with grammar study, but final translations should convey the actual request.

For contracts, applications and medical instructions, the reader needs correct roles and actions more than a literal reflection of Nepali word order.

मा, बाट and location or source

मा commonly contributes location or other relationships, while बाट can express “from,” “by” or a source in relevant constructions. घरमा can mean “at home” or “in the house”; घरबाट commonly means “from home.”

A person at an office is different from a person traveling from it. The complete verb and location phrase determine the English.

For delivery instructions, check whether an address is the sender’s location, the recipient’s destination or a place where a document must be collected. A small prepositional error can send someone to the wrong place.

Use a verified conventional English name for a city or public institution where one exists. Do not turn the literal meaning of a street name into a new geographic location.

म, हामी and first-person statements

म means “I,” and हामी means “we.” Nepali finite verb forms frequently help identify person and number, so the subject may sometimes be understood without repeated pronouns.

म अहिले काम गर्दै छु। means “I’m working now.” हामी आइपुगेका छौँ। means “We’ve arrived,” in a suitable context. Neither necessarily establishes the exact destination, hour or employer.

English can use a clear subject where the Nepali grammar already identifies one. But a cropped message containing only a verb may still need context to determine the real person or group.

Do not invent the names of participants simply to make a short fragment read like a complete official report.

तँ, तिमी and तपाईं: three levels of you

Nepali forms of “you” carry social meaning. तँ is highly familiar or socially low in many contexts, तिमी is familiar, and तपाईं is respectful. The appropriateness of a form depends on relationship and setting; none should be described as universally required for everyone.

The University of Wisconsin resource outlines these forms and suggests that तपाईं is a safe default for a learner addressing unfamiliar people respectfully. The verb normally agrees with the chosen level of respect.

तिमी कस्तो छौ? and तपाईं कस्तो हुनुहुन्छ? can both mean “How are you?” in natural English while addressing people differently. A professional version may warrant more courteous English phrasing, but the underlying question does not become a rule or command.

For an educational notice or business email, maintain the social tone across the entire translation rather than inserting “sir” after every polite pronoun.

उहाँ and respectful reference

उहाँ is a respectful third-person form frequently translated as “he” or “she,” and the accompanying verb takes honorific forms. The pronoun alone does not have a built-in English gender distinction.

उहाँ घर जानुहुन्छ। can mean “He goes home” or “She goes home,” with respectful reference, according to whom the sentence discusses. When gender is not established by the passage, do not guess based on the occupation or name.

The Introduction to the Nepali Language grammar material illustrates the contrast between ordinary and honorific verb patterns, including negative forms. It is a useful way to understand why a familiar English “goes” may take a longer Nepali form.

For official reports, repeating the person’s established name can avoid an ambiguous “he” or “she” in an English paragraph.

Nepali verb agreement and honorifics

Nepali verb forms can reflect tense, person, number and level of respect. ऊ जान्छ। is “He goes” or “She goes,” depending on context. उहाँ जानुहुन्छ। can communicate the same basic movement with a respectful reference.

The longer respectful form is not a claim that several people went. A translation should preserve the addressee or referent’s actual number independently of social respect.

A common mistake is to infer English past time from a form used in a general respectful present statement. Check verb morphology and time words together.

In a long letter, consistent honorific treatment helps determine tone. But accuracy about who sent, received, approved or signed a document remains the higher priority.

Gender agreement and English pronouns

Nepali has grammatical agreement distinctions that can reflect gender in some verb and adjective contexts. English also uses gendered third-person pronouns but does not encode the same distinctions in every verb.

A past first-person form may supply information about the speaker’s grammatical gender. That does not require adding “as a man” or “as a woman” to a natural English sentence such as “I arrived yesterday.”

Where a translation will be used as testimony or an interview record, preserve the source quotation and speaker identity so the person can be identified accurately.

Do not use grammatical agreement as a license to invent a real person’s social identity or assign an action to someone else in the document.

Habitual activity and the English present tense

म हरेक दिन पढ्छु। means “I read every day” or “I study every day,” depending on context. The phrase हरेक दिन establishes a repeated activity, so English simple present is natural.

तपाईं चिया पिउनुहुन्छ। can mean “You drink tea” in a respectful habitual statement. The University of British Columbia-hosted Nepali learning resource illustrates this exact type of respectful present form.

Do not translate a routine as an event that has definitely occurred only once. “I study every day” and “I studied yesterday” give different information about performance and time.

Choose the actual English reading or studying verb based on the object. Reading a novel is not always equivalent to preparing for an exam.

Ongoing events: अहिले and progressive forms

म अहिले किताब पढ्दै छु। can mean “I’m reading a book now.” The word अहिले points to the present, while the construction expresses activity underway.

A workplace status कागजात जाँच भइरहेको छ। can mean “The documents are being checked.” This does not say the review is complete or the documents have been approved.

The distinction matters to a reader waiting for a form. An application in review may still need a decision; a decision may then need to be communicated and accepted.

When translating process updates, use separate English labels for received, being reviewed, approved and completed.

Past events: हिजो and completed actions

हिजो means “yesterday.” मैले हिजो फोन गरेँ। can mean “I called yesterday.” The sentence reports an act in the past, not a future intention.

For a series of events, mark which action happened first. A payment initiated before an invoice was issued might have different significance from one initiated afterward.

Natural English can use simple past when the source gives a definite earlier time. Do not mechanically add “have” to every Nepali compound construction.

A timeline drawn in a few words may be more useful than memorizing a table of verb endings when the document contains multiple past events.

Future time: भोलि and plans

भोलि means “tomorrow.” म भोलि आउँछु। can mean “I’ll come tomorrow,” with the intended future context. The Nepali source does not state a clock time unless another phrase supplies one.

If a sentence uses an expression of possibility, retain it. An English “I may arrive” is different from “I will definitely arrive.”

For a school notice, a word such as tomorrow is relative to the original issue date. When a message is forwarded later, the reader needs the date of the message to resolve the calendar day.

Do not manufacture an absolute date from the day you happen to translate it.

Completed action versus pending action

Consider the stages of an application: someone completes the form, submits it, the institution receives it, checks it, and reaches a decision. The Nepali can name one of these stages without the others.

फाराम पठाइएको छ। can mean “The form has been sent.” It does not establish that the recipient approved it.

आवेदन अझै स्वीकृत भएको छैन। means “The application has not yet been approved.” That is not the same as a final refusal.

A translation should preserve the process stage. The reader may need to follow up rather than act as though a decision already exists.

छ, छैन and अस्तित्व or absence

छ and छैन frequently help express existence, availability or states. यहाँ पानी छ। can mean “There is water here.” यहाँ पानी छैन। means “There is no water here.”

The English may use “there is” rather than a literal “water exists” because natural English expresses existence differently.

Do not treat every छैन sentence as a prohibition. Something being unavailable is not the same as being forbidden, and not owning a ticket is not the same as being denied permission to buy one.

Identify whether the negation denies a fact, an identity, possession or an action.

न, नगर्नुहोस् and prohibitions

A negative instruction such as यहाँ प्रवेश नगर्नुहोस्। means “Please do not enter here” or “Do not enter,” depending on the notice’s tone. It prohibits an action rather than simply reporting that an area is empty.

यहाँ धूम्रपान निषेध छ। is “Smoking is prohibited here.” This is not a mere suggestion that smoking may be inconvenient.

In a safety or access-control sign, clear English matters more than decorative politeness. Never remove the negative or introduce an exception unsupported by the original.

For important public instructions, obtain qualified local review before producing the final sign.

आवश्यकता छैन versus अनुमति छैन

A sentence meaning “there is no need to come” differs from one meaning “you are not permitted to come.” The first removes an obligation while the second denies permission.

In Nepali, आउन आवश्यक छैन। can mean “It isn’t necessary to come.” प्रवेश गर्न अनुमति छैन। means “Entry is not permitted.” These create different choices for the reader.

When translating a school or workplace policy, ask what a person must, may and must not do. If the English changes that set of options, the translation is wrong even if every content noun is correct.

Avoid flattening every negative into the same English “must not.”

यदि and conditional clauses

यदि पानी पर्यो भने, हामी घरमै बस्छौँ। can mean “If it rains, we’ll stay at home.” It does not establish that rain will occur.

A business condition might require a document by Friday before a request can be reviewed. Check the trigger and its consequence as a single unit rather than translating them independently.

Do not change “if” into “when” just to sound conversational. A conditional event and an assumed event are not equivalent.

Restrictions such as “only registered participants” also need careful scope. English “only” should modify the same group or action as the Nepali.

अब, अझै, पहिले and पछि

Small time words often determine the practical meaning. अब commonly means “now” or “from now on” according to context. अझै can mean “still” or “yet.” पहिले means “before” and पछि means “after” in common constructions.

A message अझै जवाफ आएको छैन। means “No reply has arrived yet.” It does not say the request has been rejected.

आउनुअघि फोन गर्नुहोस्। means “Please call before coming.” The order is central; a translation instructing a call after arrival would reverse it.

In a formal workflow, missing one time word can have a greater effect than an unfamiliar adjective.

Nepali questions: where, when, what and who

Common question words include को (“who” in relevant use), के (“what” or a question element), कहाँ (“where”), कहिले (“when”), and कति (“how much” or “how many”).

बसपार्क कहाँ छ? is “Where is the bus park?” बैठक कहिले सुरु हुन्छ? means “When does the meeting start?” Those ask for information, not state an answer.

For yes-no questions, the grammar and punctuation may differ from English. A question about whether a payment arrived is not confirmation of receipt.

An English translation should keep the speech act intact. Do not rewrite a question as an approval notice.

Common Nepali expressions and natural English

नमस्ते is a common greeting. धन्यवाद means “Thank you.” कृपया can express “please” in a request, and ठीक छ commonly means “Okay” or “All right” in an appropriate exchange.

A short acknowledgment is not proof that someone agreed to every unstated condition. To establish a booking, payment or formal permission, read the earlier message and seek the actual confirmation.

Some Nepali expressions of emotion, need and courtesy are most naturally conveyed with an English sentence structure different from their literal word order.

Translate what the speaker is doing in the conversation: greeting, reassuring, inviting, requesting, declining or promising. Keep their level of certainty unchanged.

Nepali written in Latin letters

Informal Nepali messages may use Latin letters with variable spellings, such as “bholi,” “hijo,” “tapai” or “thik chha.” These spellings can omit important distinctions in consonants, vowels or nasality.

If a message affects a deadline or name, use the full conversation. A transliteration guessed from an isolated fragment may not identify the intended word accurately.

Do not silently reconstruct Devanagari and later quote it as the sender’s original text. The reconstruction is an interpretation that should be labelled separately.

Mixed Nepali–English messages also need full grammar analysis. Recognising the English word “file” does not settle whether it was sent or merely requested.

Translating Nepali voice messages

Audio must be transcribed before automated translation can interpret it as text. Background noise, local pronunciation, names and code-switching can introduce incorrect source words.

For a consequential recording, check the transcript against the original audio. A fluently translated but wrongly transcribed negative can reverse the speaker’s meaning.

Keep speaker labels and timestamps when producing a meeting transcript. A message from one speaker must not be attributed to another simply because the recognition system merged overlapping audio.

For subtitles, shorten stylistically without deleting deadlines, conditions or important qualifications. “Not yet approved” is not equivalent to “Approved,” regardless of line length.

Nepali websites and public information

Modern browsers offer translation for many supported Nepali webpages. Use a browser Translate option to get a general reading version, but treat it as a tool-generated view rather than an officially authorised English edition.

When a government agency, school or university publishes its own English version, that can help establish official terminology. Verify that it corresponds to the same policy version as the Nepali original.

Images, PDF attachments and interactive forms may remain in Nepali even when the surrounding webpage is translated. Check them separately.

The companion website translation guide covers browser workflows and troubleshooting.

Nepali photos and screenshots

Image translation starts with optical character recognition. Small vowel marks, blurred conjuncts and glare can lead to incorrect source characters.

Keep the original photograph visible and check that the English translation applies to the correct label or arrow. A fee copied accurately but attached to the wrong product can still mislead.

For menus, preserve a culturally recognised dish name with an explanation when a literal translation would be confusing. For serious allergies or safety instructions, obtain direct confirmation rather than trusting an unchecked camera overlay.

Read How to Translate an Image to English for the full image method.

Nepali PDFs and Word documents

An editable Nepali Word document is generally easier to correct than a scanned PDF. Work on a copy and check headings, tables, footnotes, comments, signatures and identifiers.

A selectable-text PDF may work with a supported translation service. A scan requires text recognition first; verify the extracted Devanagari against the page. Some legacy-font files display correctly but copy as corrupt text.

After translation, inspect table headings, amounts and page references. Visual resemblance to the original does not prove the English contains every condition.

For file workflows, see How to Translate a PDF to English and How to Translate a Word Document to English.

Bikram Sambat dates and calendar conversion

Nepali official and everyday documents may use the Bikram Sambat calendar as well as Gregorian dates. The Nepali calendar has its own months and new-year convention, so the year cannot always be converted correctly by subtracting one fixed integer from every date.

Before converting a birth date, appointment or expiry date, identify the calendar and exact month and day. Use a reliable calendar conversion from the relevant issuing authority, especially for legal and administrative records.

An English translation can preserve the original date alongside the verified Gregorian equivalent. That helps a receiving institution identify the record.

Do not mistake a familiar-looking large year number for a typographical error or invent an exact conversion from the current date alone.

Nepali numerals, money and measurements

Nepali documents may use Devanagari digits ० १ २ ३ ४ ५ ६ ७ ८ ९, corresponding to 0 through 9. Some use international digits. Verify important amounts and identifiers against the original.

Check the currency label. Nepali rupees and Indian rupees are not the same currency merely because the languages share a script or region.

For financial text, preserve amounts, tax treatment, quantities and references exactly. A price per person is different from a price for a group, and a deadline for initiating payment may be different from one requiring receipt.

If currency conversion is requested, present it as a separate verified calculation rather than silently changing the translated source amount.

Names, qualifications and official translations

Use the person’s registered English name where one exists, especially on passports and school certificates. The same source name may have several possible romanisations, but a formal record may require one consistent legal form.

Academic qualifications in Nepal should not automatically be relabelled as a British or American award. Keep the issuing institution’s official terminology and explain the stage where necessary.

Courts, universities and authorities may require certified translations or specific supporting records. Check the receiving organisation’s rules before treating a machine reading copy as an accepted document.

Never describe an unreviewed automated result as professionally verified or certified.

Twenty-two worked Nepali-to-English examples

1. A respectful greeting

Nepali: तपाईं कस्तो हुनुहुन्छ?

English: How are you?

The source uses respectful address. It is a social question, not a statement that the addressee is medically ill.

Use courteous natural English; adding sir or madam every time is usually unnecessary.

2. A letter already sent

Nepali: मैले पत्र पठाएँ।

English: I sent the letter.

Sending occurred. The sentence does not establish that the recipient has received, read or approved it.

Use a dispatch confirmation or official receipt if the reader needs proof of actual delivery.

3. A letter to send tomorrow

Nepali: म भोलि पत्र पठाउनेछु।

English: I’ll send the letter tomorrow.

The act is future, not completed. The writer does not specify a clock time.

Keep the original message date before converting tomorrow into an absolute date.

4. A required form

Nepali: कृपया शुक्रबारसम्म फाराम बुझाउनुहोस्।

English: Please submit the form by Friday.

The source identifies a required action and deadline within its request context, but not the particular submission office.

Check the full institutional notice for the exact Friday date and form type.

5. A meeting question

Nepali: बैठक कहिले सुरु हुन्छ?

English: When does the meeting start?

It asks for the starting time; it does not provide the answer.

Keep the question as a question rather than inventing a time from the typical school schedule.

6. A price question

Nepali: यसको मूल्य कति हो?

English: How much does this cost?

The source asks for a price but does not state one.

Do not create an amount or assume the currency from the language alone.

7. An office closure

Nepali: आज कार्यालय बन्द छ।

English: The office is closed today.

The sentence describes closure today relative to its original publication.

An undated photograph should not be taken as current opening-hours evidence.

8. An application being reviewed

Nepali: आवेदनको समीक्षा भइरहेको छ।

English: The application is being reviewed.

The review is ongoing. It does not mean the application was approved, rejected or accepted as final.

For an actual decision, use the issuing institution’s official record.

9. A pending reply

Nepali: अझै जवाफ आएको छैन।

English: No reply has arrived yet.

The absence is so far; it is not proof of a permanent refusal.

The recipient may need to follow up rather than treat the matter as closed.

10. An approved-or-not status

Nepali: आवेदन अझै स्वीकृत भएको छैन।

English: The application has not yet been approved.

The decision is pending, not necessarily rejected.

Preserve yet and do not promise future approval merely because it remains possible.

11. A room inquiry

Nepali: आज राति दुई जनाका लागि कोठा खाली छ?

English: Is a room available for two people tonight?

The sentence asks about availability. It does not confirm a reservation.

A real booking requires the provider’s confirmation.

12. A completed arrival

Nepali: हामी आइपुगेका छौँ।

English: We’ve arrived.

The speaker’s group has reached a destination, but the location is not named.

Use the earlier conversation to determine which entrance or station is meant.

13. A medical appointment

Nepali: ज्वरो आएमा आउनुअघि क्लिनिकमा फोन गर्नुहोस्।

English: If you develop a fever, call the clinic before coming.

The source supplies a condition and sequence, not a treatment or an automatic cancellation.

Confirm any important health instruction directly with the relevant provider.

14. A prohibition

Nepali: यहाँ प्रवेश निषेध छ।

English: Entry is prohibited here.

It states an entry restriction, not simply that the area is empty.

Do not add a fine or exception not stated on the original sign.

15. An optional visit

Nepali: आउन आवश्यक छैन।

English: There is no need to come.

The source removes an obligation; it does not itself forbid attendance.

Do not translate it as You must not come.

16. A conditional plan

Nepali: यदि पानी पर्यो भने, हामी घरमै बस्छौँ।

English: If it rains, we’ll stay home.

The plan depends on rainfall and does not forecast rain.

Keep if rather than converting a possible event into a certainty.

17. A delivery update

Nepali: पार्सल पठाइएको छ, तर ट्र्याकिङ नम्बर अझै उपलब्ध छैन।

English: The parcel has been sent, but the tracking number is not available yet.

Dispatch and tracking availability are separate stages; neither proves delivery.

Verify live delivery status with the carrier.

18. A refund request

Nepali: रकम फिर्ताको अनुरोधको समीक्षा भइरहेको छ।

English: The refund request is being reviewed.

The source does not say the refund was granted or paid.

Do not make the English more reassuring by inventing a decision.

19. A payment deadline

Nepali: बिल जारी भएको मितिदेखि दस दिनभित्र भुक्तानी गर्नुहोस्।

English: Please make payment within ten days of the bill issue date.

The time period starts at issuance, not from the reader opening an email.

Check the actual issue date, amount and banking terms.

20. An association in research

Nepali: नतिजाले सम्बन्ध देखाउँछन्, तर कारण प्रमाणित गर्दैनन्।

English: The results show an association but do not prove causation.

The source limits the evidence’s strength. It does not assert a demonstrated causal mechanism.

Academic translation needs to preserve statistical qualifiers and data tables.

21. A workplace update

Nepali: हामीले परीक्षण पूरा गरेका छौँ, तर अन्तिम प्रतिवेदन स्वीकृत भएको छैन।

English: We’ve completed the tests, but the final report has not been approved.

Testing is complete and approval is outstanding. These are distinct stages.

Release should not be assumed from completed work without the relevant sign-off.

22. A document disclaimer

Nepali: यो अंकपत्र डिग्री प्रमाणपत्र होइन।

English: This marksheet is not a degree certificate.

The text distinguishes a statement of marks from an award certificate.

Use the issuing institution’s official English term for formal submissions.

Frequently asked questions

Can Nepali be translated with a Hindi tool?

Both commonly use Devanagari, but their grammar, vocabulary and usage are distinct. Choose Nepali as the source and check official terms against the actual document.

What is the difference between तिमी and तपाईं?

तिमी is a familiar form of you, while तपाईं is a respectful form. The verb changes accordingly, but English often retains one pronoun with suitable tone.

What does उहाँ mean?

It is a respectful third-person reference, commonly rendered as he or she depending on context. The pronoun alone does not identify gender.

Does Nepali use verbs at the end?

In ordinary clauses, Nepali frequently uses subject–object–verb order. English generally rearranges the verb to follow the subject.

What does मलाई mean?

It can mark an experiencer or recipient. The natural English may begin with I, as in I need water, depending on the complete sentence.

What does ले mark?

It often identifies an agent in certain perfective transitive clauses and has other grammatical functions. Translate the relationship in context.

How do I translate Nepali text in an image?

Use a supported camera translator, but check the recognised Devanagari and any important names, negative words and figures against the image.

What does अझै mean?

It can mean still or yet according to context. In a negative status report, it may show that an action has not yet occurred rather than a final refusal.

How do I translate Nepali calendar dates?

Identify whether the date is Bikram Sambat or Gregorian, then verify the exact conversion including the month and day. Do not use a fixed subtraction alone.

Can I translate Romanized Nepali messages?

Often yes, but informal Latin spellings vary. Use the whole conversation and ask for clarification when a date, payment or person’s identity is unclear.

Is machine translation accepted for official use?

Not automatically. The receiving organisation may require certification, a qualified translator or a particular format. Check its rules.

What makes a Nepali-to-English translation accurate?

Correct actors, actions, timing, negatives, obligation, probability, names and numbers. Natural English matters, but it cannot replace the source’s facts.

A reliable two-pass review workflow

Read the English by itself first. It should be coherent and useful to a person who cannot read Nepali. Then open the Nepali and compare each clause. Identify the subject and verb, and check whether any instruction is conditional or negative.

Next review all factual data: proper names, invoice numbers, dates, amounts, percentages, address details and units. A grammatically perfect English sentence can still be practically wrong if one digit changes or a figure is attached to a different table row.

For a long document, maintain a short glossary of established terms. Distinguish an application, registration, receipt, verification and approval. These may be separate stages of an institutional process and should not be collapsed simply because ordinary speech uses similar words.

Where the original remains unclear, mark the problem. A note saying “the recipient is not identified in this excerpt” is better than inventing a named person. For binding or safety-related material, a qualified bilingual reviewer should resolve the issue.

Do not treat back-translation as proof. Two automated tools can share assumptions or use different correct expressions. Direct examination of the Nepali original and the intended English consequence is the stronger check.

A fifteen-minute Nepali translation practice routine

Choose a short sentence about something done yesterday. Identify the subject and the verb, then write natural English. Compare your version with a trusted translator and determine whether any difference changes an actual fact or only the wording.

Next use a sentence addressed respectfully to someone. Mark the pronoun and verb form. Translate the sentence so that English preserves the appropriate tone without pretending the respectful form necessarily refers to several people.

For a third exercise, take a negative statement about an application or a file. Decide whether it reports rejection, nonreceipt, incompleteness or not-yet approval. Those are different stages. Repair any English version that confuses them.

Finish with a real school or travel notice. Check the number of instructions and the date. Ask another reader what they would do after reading the English. If it differs from the Nepali instruction, revise your translation before polishing style.

Keep a small error log: source, first version, correction and reason. Correcting one meaning-changing mistake thoroughly teaches more than collecting a long list of unchecked dictionary words.

The central principle

Nepali-to-English translation succeeds when the English reader understands the same person, action, time, condition and level of certainty as the Nepali reader. English may need different word order, an explicit article or a clearer subject. It must not create an approval, invent a date or change a restriction.

For the reverse direction, read English to Nepali Translation. For the broader method, read Master Art of Translation. Keep the original available, translate the meaning, and verify the details that determine the reader’s next action.
