Quick answer: IB Diploma Mathematics has four choices: AA SL, AA HL, AI SL and AI HL. AA emphasises analytical reasoning and mathematical methods; AI emphasises modelling, applications, data and interpretation. HL involves greater scope than SL. Check university subject prerequisites before choosing a course. Updated mathematics syllabuses start teaching in 2027, with first assessment in 2029.
This guide answers the questions Singapore parents most often face: which IB Maths is suitable, whether AA/AI matter for university, what HL changes and how the 2029 syllabus transition affects planning.

The four IB Mathematics options at a glance
Students taking the full IB Diploma choose one of four Diploma Programme mathematics courses: Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches SL (AA SL), Analysis and Approaches HL (AA HL), Applications and Interpretation SL (AI SL), or Applications and Interpretation HL (AI HL). The IB specifies that students study only one mathematics course as part of their Diploma.
All four require mathematical knowledge, logical reasoning and technology literacy. AA and AI are different emphases, not a grading scale from “weak” to “strong”. At Higher Level, each course expects greater breadth and depth than the corresponding Standard Level version. The student’s intended university course and their actual mathematical readiness should guide the choice.
What is Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA)?
AA gives substantial attention to mathematical structures, rigorous procedures, algebraic relationships and analytic approaches. It suits students who value understanding why a method works and are comfortable with precise symbolic reasoning. It is commonly attractive to students interested in mathematics-intensive disciplines, but it is not exclusively for engineers or future mathematicians.
For example, imagine a business modelling profit as a function of price. An AA-style question may put strong weight on deriving a function, solving equations or interpreting the effect of a change by applying mathematical analysis. The student must explain each step, not just present a number.
Weaknesses in factorisation, rearranging formulae, functions, trigonometry and algebraic accuracy can make such work feel much harder than it needs to be. Those foundations can often be repaired, but the timetable should account for the repair before adding an ambitious HL programme.
What is Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI)?
AI emphasises mathematical use in contexts involving modelling, data, technology and interpretation. Students must judge what a mathematical result says about a real-world situation, its assumptions and its limits. It is not a mathematics-free or low-effort option. Complex models and statistical reasoning can be demanding, particularly at HL.
Consider a dataset about travel times across several Singapore neighbourhoods. AI-style thinking might involve selecting an appropriate statistical summary, developing or assessing a model, using a calculator or technology tool correctly and explaining when the model might fail. A student must understand both the calculation and the meaning of the result.
The choice between AA and AI is therefore a choice about the nature of the work as well as potential future requirements. An articulate student who enjoys real-world modelling may thrive in AI but still need deliberate practice with notation and numerical checking.
Is HL Mathematics harder than SL Mathematics?
HL is designed for students who can sustain the additional content, reasoning and time commitment. The IB commonly recommends around 240 teaching hours for an HL subject and 150 for an SL subject. The final subject-grade scale remains 1–7 for both; an HL 7 and an SL 7 each contribute seven points to the Diploma total, but they are different courses.
A seven-point HL course does not automatically give seven more “valuable” points. Universities may specify an HL subject as an entry condition, however. Thus the same reported number can have different significance for a course that requires Mathematics at Higher Level.
Do not infer that AI HL is automatically easier or harder than AA SL because one has the word “applications”. Compare syllabuses at the relevant examination session and inspect the actual concepts, assessment tasks and university prerequisites.
Important change for the 2027–2029 cohorts
The IB has published updated Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation courses for first teaching in August 2027 and first assessment in May 2029. The IB also states that the previous mathematics curriculum has its final assessment in November 2028. This creates a real cohort boundary for families choosing DP1 in 2027.
Parents reading an online 2024 Mathematics AA guide should not assume it is the subject guide that governs their child’s examination in 2029. The broad distinction between AA and AI remains useful, but details of content, assessment and exemplars should be checked against the IB’s current mathematics curriculum page and the school’s adopted guide.
Ask the IB coordinator two precise questions: “Which first-assessment session applies to my child?” and “Are the teaching resources and internal assessments aligned to that version?” Answering those is more useful than a general claim that the syllabus never changes.
What do NUS and NTU require for university?
No single answer covers all degrees. NUS and NTU publish programme-specific subject prerequisites and other admissions conditions. A high IB total does not substitute automatically for a missing mathematics or science requirement. Engineering, mathematical sciences, computing, economics, medicine and the humanities may each have distinct conditions.
NTU’s IB Diploma admissions guidance says it accepts either Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches or Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation where Mathematics is required, without a preference between those two course families. This does not mean SL and HL are interchangeable for every degree. For example, NTU’s Mathematical Sciences programme specifies a pass in Mathematics at Higher Level.
A student interested in a mathematics-related degree should retrieve the exact admission page for that course and year. For overseas universities, check each institution separately. Some may distinguish AA from AI or specify particular mathematics levels. General recognition of the IB Diploma is not a promise of equivalence for every degree.
Worked example: engineering, economics and arts
Imagine a student who is reasonably strong in algebra and physics and considering engineering. They should first compile engineering programmes at the universities they may realistically apply to. Mark the required Mathematics course and level and any science prerequisites. They should choose the school and HL combination only after confirming those conditions.
A student interested in economics, data-driven social sciences or business should likewise examine quantitative requirements. Some courses are mathematically demanding even though their titles sound less technical. Statistics, calculus and analytical writing can matter in both AA and AI. The correct decision is not “economics means AI”; it is “which courses and levels will the shortlisted universities accept?”
An arts-focused student should not automatically abandon strong mathematics study, nor should they take an overwhelming HL course merely to signal prestige. The best mathematics choice preserves credible future options without making the whole six-subject Diploma unmanageable.
How to diagnose readiness for AA or AI
Ask the student to solve a recent unfamiliar question, narrating why each step is legitimate. A child who knows a formula but cannot identify when to use it has a routing problem. A child who recognises the method but makes algebra errors has a procedure problem. A child who calculates successfully but misreads the context has a translation or modelling problem.
Use the next weeks to repair the actual problem. For AA, this might involve symbolic equations, functions and exact explanations. For AI, it might involve statistical concepts, interpreting model assumptions and reliable calculator use. Both courses require mathematical vocabulary, the ability to check plausibility and willingness to revisit an answer.
A responsible tuition decision begins with that diagnostic. Extra lessons should help the child explain a step that previously failed, not simply add another pile of advanced worksheets.
An eight-step subject-choice decision
A parent can make this decision without becoming an IB syllabus expert. Separate mandatory requirements from preferences and collect evidence from the student, school and university.
- List three plausible university degrees and the institutions that offer them.
- Find each degree’s current IB Mathematics course and HL/SL prerequisites.
- Confirm the school’s available AA and AI courses for the intended cohort.
- Identify whether the child’s examination follows the pre-2029 or 2029-first-assessment syllabus.
- Review actual classwork for gaps in algebra, functions, graphs, modelling and statistical reasoning.
- Ask the mathematics teacher to explain the additional HL workload and suitable bridge topics.
- Check the proposed six-subject programme for conflicts and overall workload.
- Write down the chosen course, why it fits and when to revisit the decision.
