How Singapore Education Works | International Baccalaureate® (IB) Subject Combinations 2027–2028: HL, SL and University Prerequisites

Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

Quick answer: A full IB Diploma student normally chooses six subjects: three Higher Level (HL) and three Standard Level (SL), with up to four HL allowed. Do not choose your IB subjects only by predicted scores. Check which courses are actually offered, which subjects your possible university degrees require and whether the workload is sustainable.

Reader route: This guide is for students entering DP in 2027 or 2028, parents comparing IB course combinations and families trying to keep medicine, engineering, computing, economics, law, arts or other options open. Worked combinations are examples, not admissions guarantees.

Find the answer you need

How many IB Diploma subjects must a student choose?

The full International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP) normally requires six subjects plus the Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) core. Students usually take three subjects at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL); the IB permits four HL subjects with the remaining two at SL under its rules. HL normally involves 240 recommended teaching hours, versus 150 for SL.

Subjects are organised into six groups: studies in language and literature; language acquisition; individuals and societies; sciences; mathematics; and the arts. The programme allows eligible substitutions, including taking another subject from the first five groups instead of a Group 6 arts subject. There are language-specific permitted alternatives and limited interdisciplinary courses, so check the official curriculum rather than applying an over-simple one-from-every-group rule.

Choose subjects backward from the next destination: start with a credible shortlist of university degrees, identify compulsory subjects and levels, then determine what the actual IB school offers. A student who chooses six enjoyable subjects without checking an intended degree’s prerequisites may find that an excellent 42-point total cannot resolve a missing entry requirement.

Which subjects are taught at HL and SL?

HL and SL are distinct course depths, not a simple ranking of a student’s intelligence. A strong HL student needs solid existing knowledge, independent practice and time to complete subject-specific assessed work. SL subjects are not free marks. A language or a mathematics course at SL can still require sustained work and influence university eligibility.

When a university says it requires IB Mathematics at HL, an SL result typically does not satisfy that requirement merely because the score is higher. Conversely, taking an unnecessary fourth HL can increase workload without making an application stronger. Ask the university’s admissions office when a published prerequisite is unclear.

A school’s subject menu matters. Some campuses offer HL Physics but not every timetable permutation; some language options may depend on demand, prior study or approval. An authorised IB school does not promise every listed IB subject at each level.

Three questions before selecting a subject combination

First: What is genuinely possible at this school? Request the actual DP cohort’s subject list, timetable blocks and language placement rules. A catalogue of all IB subjects worldwide is not the same as the courses your child can enrol in.

Second: What prerequisite creates a hard boundary later? Check the faculty-level pages for NUS, NTU, SMU or an overseas destination. Engineering, science, computing, medicine, economics, architecture and the humanities may have different required subjects, levels, grades, tests and language conditions.

Third: What work can the student realistically sustain? Look at the latest algebra, science reasoning, reading, essay writing and time-management evidence. Choosing HL out of prestige can create predictable strain; avoiding an important HL merely to protect an overall number can close a desired option. There is no universal solution.

Worked example: an engineering-oriented student

One illustrative, not prescribed combination is Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL, Physics HL, Economics HL; English A SL, another language at SL, and Chemistry SL. This covers six subjects and uses an allowable additional science in place of Group 6 arts. It keeps mathematics and physics at HL while leaving room for a third HL subject that suits the student.

The example does not mean that every engineering university requires this set, or that every school can timetable it. A university might accept Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL, or require a particular science grade, or assess an individual engineering discipline differently. For the 2027–2028 cohort, compare the correct subject guide and the exact university application year.

The teaching problem for this student is often not simply calculus. Algebraic accuracy, units, graph interpretation and explaining assumptions must remain reliable even when tasks become harder. A strong subject combination on paper cannot substitute for those foundations.

Worked example: medicine and life sciences

A possible broad preparation pattern is Biology HL, Chemistry HL, Mathematics HL; Language A SL, language acquisition SL, and Economics or another eligible Group 3 subject SL. It is an example of a valid broad architecture, not a claim that NUS Medicine, NTU LKCMedicine or overseas medical schools require that exact set.

Medicine is especially important because the requirements can include more than IB grades. Admissions assessments, interviews, deadlines and approved subject alternatives can differ by institution and admissions year. NUS publishes additional requirements for its medicine and dentistry applicants, with different deadlines and tests depending on examination session. Read the current official page before committing to the subject combination.

Do not over-select laboratory subjects under the assumption that “more science” always means a stronger application. A sustainable programme, accurate evidence-based writing and actual performance in the required subjects matter more than the appearance of a difficult timetable.

Worked example: computing, data science and economics

A student interested in computing might favour Mathematics HL, Physics HL and Economics HL, plus a suitable Language A, language-acquisition and sixth subject at SL. Another student may take Computer Science if it is offered and permitted in their chosen combination. The IB Computer Science course is not automatically required for admission to every computing degree; mathematical preparedness may be more important for some programmes.

Economics can be mathematically intensive at university even when its school subject is studied in an individuals-and-societies group. Calculus, probability and statistical modelling may become central in higher education. The important university question is therefore not only “Do you have IB Economics?” but also which mathematics subject and level are accepted.

For a student choosing between Mathematics AA and AI, consult the receiving university. NTU’s published IB guidance accepts both AA and AI when Mathematics is a prerequisite, but programme-specific HL requirements can still apply. Other institutions may distinguish the courses differently.

Worked example: law, humanities and languages

A student leaning toward law, politics or history might choose English A HL, History HL, Economics HL; language acquisition SL, a science SL and mathematics SL. This is an illustrative broad humanities combination, and the exact law-school entry rules may place different weight on language qualifications, selection tests, personal statements or interviews.

A strong humanities applicant needs more than polished vocabulary. The student must evaluate sources, separate descriptions from interpretations, explain why a quotation matters and present counterarguments. TOK and the Extended Essay can reinforce those habits, but they cannot replace subject-specific reading and coursework.

If this student may later pivot into economics or a quantitative degree, they should check whether their intended mathematics SL course would become a restriction. The future is uncertain: a good plan preserves real options without requiring every student to take the maximum workload.

Worked example: arts, design and a balanced DP

A student committed to the visual arts might study Visual Arts HL, English A HL, Psychology HL; language acquisition SL, a science SL and Mathematics SL, subject to school availability and the IB’s permitted combinations. Another may value Design Technology or a different artistic pathway. Creative programmes can involve portfolios, interviews and specialised admission requirements.

The key is to understand the actual output required for the intended post-secondary course. If a design degree expects a portfolio, a school with strong studio support, critique and time for authentic projects may be more valuable than one with a famous overall score average. If engineering remains a serious alternative, the student should not discard its core mathematics prerequisites casually.

Learning is still connected: a design student benefits from mathematics and physics when making structures, and a future scientist benefits from precise writing, collaboration and visual representation. Breadth is useful when it is organised around genuine mastery rather than superficial box-ticking.

Can students replace the arts subject with another science?

Yes, subject to the official rules and school offering, a student may select a permitted extra subject from Groups 1 to 5 instead of taking an arts subject from Group 6. This is one reason families encounter six-subject programmes with two sciences, or an additional individual-and-societies subject.

The relevant rule does not imply that any arbitrary six subjects qualify. Students must also satisfy the core language, subject-group and HL/SL requirements. Some interdisciplinary courses are counted across groups under specific conditions. Ask the programme coordinator to validate the final selection in the IB registration framework, not merely in a family spreadsheet.

Families should also watch language placement. A student with years of prior learning may not be eligible for an introductory language course under school placement rules. Language choices have real assessment and progression consequences.

How to deal with a child who is undecided

When the student cannot choose a career, avoid forcing a premature professional identity. Create three lists: subjects the student can currently do well, subjects they enjoy but need support in, and prerequisites that would close meaningful options if omitted.

A useful “least-regret” choice protects serious interests rather than every imaginable degree. For example, a mathematically capable undecided learner might preserve an HL maths route while choosing a third HL that fits their strengths. A student weak in algebra may be better served by foundation work and honest university planning than by an unsupported promise that extreme effort alone will make HL manageable.

Revisit the decision after examining actual work and official prerequisites. The goal is durable learning and future flexibility with manageable stress. Sign up for extra mathematics tuition only after the student’s starting position is clear.

A decision checklist for parents and students

A subject-selection meeting should end with a written decision that both student and school can defend. It should include the examination session, full list of subjects and levels, university-prerequisite evidence and a plan for any known learning gaps.

For students beginning DP1 in 2027, remember that IB Mathematics AA and AI have updated guides for first teaching in August 2027 and first assessment in May 2029. Check that the school uses the applicable syllabus rather than relying on old topic lists. The requirements for other subjects can also change by examination session.

Subject-choice checklist

  • Confirm the exact school, programme and cohort examination session.
  • Obtain the school’s current subjects offered and HL/SL timetable blocks.
  • List three credible university degree pathways and their official prerequisites.
  • Mark required Maths, science, language and any subject-level minima.
  • Check the six-subject group structure, permitted substitutions and 3–4 HL rules.
  • Inspect real schoolwork for missing concepts or weaknesses before choosing additional HL.
  • Discuss expected coursework, EE, TOK, CAS and exam demands with the student.
  • Choose a set of subjects that leaves realistic options while protecting sleep and learning continuity.
  • Ask the school to validate the final selection under current IB registration rules.
  • Record an evidence-based reason for each choice and a review date.

Frequently asked questions

How many HL subjects should I take in IB?

Most full-Diploma students take three HL and three SL subjects. Four HL subjects may be permitted under IB rules and school arrangements.

Is a fourth HL better for university applications?

Not inherently. A fourth HL increases workload and may not add value if the intended universities require only particular subjects.

Can I take two sciences in IB?

Yes, an additional permitted science may replace the arts group, subject to the IB’s rules and your school timetable.

Which IB Maths is best for medicine or engineering?

There is no universal answer. Start with course-specific university requirements for the intended year, then check AA/AI and HL/SL acceptance.

Does a 45-point Diploma guarantee medicine or law admission?

No. Universities may apply tests, interviews, course-specific prerequisites, selection limits and other requirements.

Must every student take an arts subject?

No. Eligible substitutions from the other subject groups are possible; consult the official IB curriculum.

Can I change HL to SL halfway through DP?

A change may be possible under school timetabling, registration and programme rules, but do not assume it is guaranteed or without consequences.

What if my school does not offer the required subject?

Check an approved alternative at the desired university and ask the school about permitted provision; do not assume an informal external course will be recognised.
