Quick answer. The revised IB Computer Science course is first assessed in May 2027. It now has two written papers, themes covering computing systems and computational thinking, programming in Java or Python, and an individual computational-solution IA. SL assessment is 70% external / 30% IA; HL is 80% external / 20% IA. Older guides describing an extra HL Paper 3 or the former option papers do not match this new course.
This Singapore parent and student guide explains how the course actually works, where students lose marks and how the subject fits university computing pathways. The goal is to make a usable decision before choosing SL, HL or extra tuition.

What changed in IB Computer Science for 2027?
The International Baccalaureate introduced a revised Diploma Programme Computer Science curriculum for first teaching in August 2025 and first assessment in May 2027. Students taking the first examination in 2027 must use this newer guide. An older past-paper collection, online study checklist or school presentation describing the previous four-option structure and HL Paper 3 does not accurately describe the new assessment architecture.
The new syllabus gives more explicit attention to computing systems, computational thinking and practical problem-solving. It organises teaching around Theme A: Concepts of computer science and Theme B: Computational thinking and problem-solving. Students learn to explain computing mechanisms and create a working computational solution rather than treating coding syntax as the whole subject.
For a Singapore family, the immediate questions are which 2027 subject version the school teaches, whether it offers Standard Level or Higher Level, what programming languages it supports, and how the selected course fits the student’s full six-subject Diploma and intended university pathway.
IB Computer Science SL versus HL at a glance
The IB recommends approximately 150 teaching hours for SL and 240 hours for HL. Both levels include core concepts, programming, problem-solving, an internal computational solution and the collaborative sciences project. HL studies additional content and receives a longer external examination.
In the published new assessment model, SL has 70% external assessment and 30% internal assessment; HL has 80% external assessment and 20% internal assessment. The internal assessment itself has the same underlying requirements at both levels, but its proportion of the final grade differs. These percentages matter when a student plans revision and project work.
HL is not automatically the best choice for every student who likes computers. A child may enjoy making websites but still need to build accuracy in mathematical reasoning, algorithmic design and evaluating computational complexity. Others may already have strong programming experience but struggle to write evidence-based explanations of how systems work. Study level should follow demonstrated readiness and likely university prerequisites, not the apparent prestige of a fourth HL.
Theme A: computer fundamentals, networks, databases and machine learning
Theme A asks how digital systems work. The published structure includes A.1 computer fundamentals, A.2 networks, A.3 databases and A.4 machine learning. Students should know how to represent and process information, why network components are arranged in particular ways, how data can be organised and queried, and what a machine-learning system does and does not establish.
Consider a school using attendance data to predict which students might need assistance. A student must separate a computer’s prediction from a proven causal explanation. Training-data bias, data quality, false positives, privacy and the meaning of an output all affect the value of the model. This connects programming to fair decision-making in education and the real world.
A useful revision technique is to draw a system from memory and then explain one failure mode. For a network, identify where an outage or insecure connection affects information flow. For a database, explain what happens when records are duplicated or poorly linked. For machine learning, distinguish training examples, evaluation data and genuine performance on unseen cases.
Theme B: computational thinking and programming
Theme B includes B.1 computational thinking, B.2 programming, B.3 object-oriented programming and B.4 abstract data types, which the official syllabus identifies as HL-only content. Students learn to decompose a problem, design an algorithm, represent information in a sensible structure, implement a solution and verify that it behaves correctly.
Imagine a tuition centre scheduling small groups with limited rooms, subjects and tutors. A poorly designed program might assume that every class lasts an equal time or that any teacher can teach every subject. A better student first lists the actual constraints, decides how to represent them, tests conflicting inputs and explains what the output guarantees. Coding comes after understanding the system.
A learner who can copy a working function but cannot explain its input, output, edge cases or efficiency is not yet mastering the assessment target. Practise tracing code manually, predicting the program state after each instruction, testing boundary conditions and explaining why a proposed algorithm solves the stated problem.
Python or Java: which language is used?
For the updated 2027 course, the IB states that students can answer Paper 2 programming questions using Java or Python. The school should make clear which language it teaches and how students are prepared to demonstrate algorithmic thinking in that language.
Python can be approachable for a beginner because its syntax is compact; Java gives structured exposure to classes and typed objects. Neither choice removes the need to understand variables, sequence, selection, iteration, functions, data structures and testing. A student should not spend all revision time memorising built-in commands while neglecting how the problem is decomposed.
If switching schools during DP1 or DP2, ask whether the receiving school teaches the same language and assessment syllabus. Learning a different programming language can be manageable, but the transfer consumes time and may create avoidable stress when coursework and examination deadlines are already near.
How Paper 1 works in the new 2027 syllabus
The updated Paper 1 examines Theme A—concepts of computer science—and a case study connecting computing knowledge to an emerging issue. In the official table, SL Paper 1 lasts 1 hour 15 minutes and contributes 35% of the subject mark. HL Paper 1 lasts 2 hours and contributes 40%.
The case study is now included at SL as well as HL; the earlier case-study-linked HL Paper 3 has been removed. Older guides that tell new 2027 students to prepare for a separate HL case-study Paper 3 should be treated as out of date.
Paper 1 answers should describe mechanisms rather than pile up buzzwords. If the question concerns a database or machine-learning service, explain the specific representation, operation and possible failure. If it asks for evaluation, compare benefits against realistic costs or risks and say which evidence would support a conclusion.
How Paper 2 works and why trace tables matter
The revised Paper 2 assesses Theme B: computational thinking and problem-solving. It includes questions requiring programming knowledge, with responses permitted in Java or Python. SL Paper 2 is 1 hour 15 minutes and 35% of the final mark; HL Paper 2 is 2 hours and 40%.
A useful preparation exercise is a small trace table: write the values of variables after each loop iteration and check the condition at the correct moment. If a program adds every even number, explicitly test an empty list, a list of one odd number and a list containing negative numbers. This exposes assumptions that are easily hidden when students run code and simply see an output.
Students should practise explaining how they know an algorithm works. A solution can produce the correct answer for one example and still fail on an unseen case. Testing is a reasoning skill; it is not merely finding a syntax error.
What is the IB Computer Science internal assessment?
The revised internal assessment is a computational solution addressing a real problem chosen by the student. The work should show the computational-thinking process and demonstrate relevant programming and algorithmic skills. The IB’s published 2027 examiner instructions distinguish the product, which is the completed software, from the solution, which includes the documented submission and supporting evidence.
The IB allocates about 35 teaching hours to this assessed component. It counts for 30% at SL and 20% at HL. The official examiner instructions state that collaborative work is not permitted on the internal assessment. This is a significant boundary even though the course also includes a separate collaborative sciences project.
A successful investigation begins with a feasible problem. For example, a student could make a small study-session scheduler that respects available rooms, times and subject restrictions, using test cases that include conflicts and missing information. The student must justify design decisions, evaluate whether the program meets its stated purpose and document authentic individual work.
Buying or copying a ready-made application, asking another programmer to build the product, or submitting AI-generated code without appropriate acknowledgement and independent ownership undermines academic integrity. The school should teach how to use tools ethically and how to preserve evidence that the student understands and produced the assessed solution.
Is the collaborative sciences project the same as the IA?
No. The revised Computer Science course includes a collaborative sciences project that promotes work with students across Group 4 science disciplines. It is a learning activity with a different purpose from the individual assessed computational solution.
A group investigating energy use might involve Physics students who understand measurements, Computer Science students who analyse data and Biology or ESS students who evaluate environmental effects. Collaborative investigation can expose the assumptions behind a model and teach how to explain findings across disciplines.
Students must keep the collaboration boundary clear. Sharing appropriate discussions in a supervised sciences project does not authorise a teammate to write or design an individual’s Computer Science IA. Ask the teacher which outputs are group-based and which must be authenticated independently.
How difficult is IB Computer Science compared with A-Level Computing or IGCSE?
There is no single accurate difficulty ranking across different awarding bodies. Singapore G3 Computing, Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science, Singapore A-Level Computing, and IB Computer Science can cover related ideas but differ in their syllabuses, assessment formats and advanced content.
A student moving from IGCSE may have practised pseudocode and trace tables but need to learn the actual Java or Python expectations for the IB syllabus. A student from a national school may be strong in mathematics but unfamiliar with object-oriented programming or data models. Each transition requires a topic-by-topic learning map rather than an invented score conversion.
The real challenge should be diagnosed from work. Is the student missing the fundamental concept, choosing an unsuitable algorithm, writing incorrect syntax, misunderstanding the prompt or unable to explain an evaluation? Each issue needs a different teaching response.
Does IB Computer Science help university admission to computing?
IB Computer Science can demonstrate relevant preparation, but universities often specify Mathematics and sometimes science prerequisites for computing, engineering or data science degrees. A high grade in Computer Science does not always compensate for missing an explicitly required HL Mathematics course.
The student should examine NUS, NTU, SMU, SUTD and any overseas universities at the exact degree level. Check whether the programme requires Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, a certain level, particular grades or additional admissions evidence. Do not rely on a statement that “universities want students who code” without reading the real requirements.
Computer Science also supports many non-programming interests: cybersecurity, software engineering, machine learning, information systems and quantitative research. Keep a broad enough subject combination to preserve credible options rather than taking an unnecessary fourth HL solely for prestige.
A practical four-week Computer Science revision plan
Week 1: diagnose Theme A knowledge using short explanations of networks, databases and computing concepts. Make a concept map and identify where an apparently correct explanation depends on an undefined term.
Week 2: practise Theme B algorithm design, trace tables and Python or Java programming, beginning with small unfamiliar problems. Check each error against expected behaviour and record why it happened.
Week 3: complete mixed practice in the Paper 1 and Paper 2 formats. Explain case-study issues using actual evidence and limits; do not assume that repeating slogans about AI or data privacy constitutes an argument.
Week 4: repair recurring weaknesses and rehearse realistic examination timing. Check the latest subject guide, permitted programming-response conventions and school instructions for the 2027 assessment session. Continue independent IA milestones only under the teacher’s permitted process.
A good study plan remains compatible with sleep and the student’s other five subjects. The aim is to locate and repair failure points, not count hours spent staring at code.
