How Singapore Education Works | International Baccalaureate® (IB) Physics HL vs SL 2027: Syllabus, Papers and Scientific Investigation

Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

Quick answer: IB Physics in 2027 follows the revised course first assessed in 2025. Students choose SL (150 recommended hours) or HL (240 hours). The syllabus has five themes; the examination consists of Paper 1A/1B and Paper 2, with a 20% scientific investigation. There is no separate Paper 3 in the revised Physics assessment. Choosing HL should depend on mathematics readiness, actual school offerings and university subject prerequisites.

This guide helps Singapore students and parents understand the complete course, the assessment tasks, how to avoid predictable reasoning errors and why the correct Physics subject level can matter for engineering or medicine.

Find the answer you need

Physics HL versus SL: the quick difference

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme offers Physics at Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). Both use the same five conceptual themes and both require scientific investigation and quantitative reasoning. HL adds wider content, greater depth and more demanding mathematical treatment; it is not merely the same SL lessons with a harder final paper.

IB recommends 150 teaching hours for SL and 240 for HL. These are curriculum recommendations, not a promise that all schools meet for the same weekly number of periods. Some students study Physics because they enjoy explaining the world; others need a particular level to satisfy engineering, physics or another university degree’s prerequisites.

The course first assessed in May 2025 remains the relevant framework for 2027 candidates, subject to any subsequently published IB updates. Much older advice about the old Option topics or a separate Physics Paper 3 may describe a previous syllabus, not the one your child will take.

What are the five IB Physics themes?

The revised syllabus is organised into A: Space, time and motion; B: The particulate nature of matter; C: Wave behaviour; D: Fields; and E: Nuclear and quantum physics. Students are encouraged to connect these ideas through the concepts of forces, energy and particles.

Theme A covers motion, forces, momentum, work and energy, with HL extensions such as rigid-body mechanics and special relativity. Theme B links temperature and thermal transfer to gas laws, electrical current and, at HL, thermodynamics. Theme C develops oscillation and waves, including resonance and phenomena that require precise use of phase, frequency and wavelength.

Theme D includes gravity, electric and magnetic fields and motion in fields; HL adds electromagnetic induction. Theme E addresses atomic structure, radioactive decay, fission and the relationship between fusion and stars, while HL studies quantum physics in greater depth.

No single theme can be treated as self-contained. For example, the same idea of energy conservation appears in work, electric potential, waves and nuclear processes. A student who memorises an equation under one chapter but cannot recognise it in another needs help with transfer, not simply another topic summary.

What really becomes harder at HL?

HL demands more topics and additional reasoning. It can require stronger algebra, interpretation of graphs, handling vectors, interpreting unfamiliar models and connecting principles across the five themes. A student may understand the idea of an electric field at SL but struggle when a multi-step HL problem combines field forces, circular motion and energy changes.

Higher Level also increases the total exposure to science experiments, problem solving and assessed work within an already demanding six-subject Diploma. This can be a good choice for a student who has reliable mathematical foundations and a sustained interest in mathematical sciences. It is not a requirement to take every possible HL subject to look impressive.

The relevant distinction is preparation. A learner who can explain a relationship verbally but makes errors rearranging equations has a different challenge from one who manipulates equations efficiently but cannot justify which physical law applies. The school should test both before recommending HL.

How the 2027 Physics examination is structured

Under the syllabus first assessed in 2025, IB Physics has Paper 1, Paper 2 and an internally assessed scientific investigation. There is no separate Paper 3 under this course design. Paper 1 contains Paper 1A multiple-choice questions and Paper 1B data-based questions. Paper 2 contains short-answer and extended-response tasks testing physics reasoning.

The examination weighting is 80% external assessment and 20% internal scientific investigation. The subject’s published guide allocates 36% to Paper 1 and 44% to Paper 2. For SL candidates, Paper 1 and Paper 2 are 1 hour 30 minutes each, totalling three external examination hours. HL has longer papers and additional course content.

For examination planning, do not confuse a sample practice paper from 2019 with the 2027 framework. Old Physics option questions or an old Paper 3 format are not a reliable complete revision plan. Ask the teacher which official guide and specimen/past-paper versions match the child’s final assessment session.

Paper 1A can reveal fragile definitions or conceptual misunderstandings, while Paper 1B tests the ability to interpret given information. Paper 2 often requires a coherent chain of modelling, equations, numerical working, assumptions and explanation. A student who practises only rapid multiple choice is not preparing for all these demands.

What is Paper 1B and how should students practise?

Paper 1B uses data-based questions. Students may need to interpret measured values, table headings, graphs, uncertainty, gradients, patterns and conclusions. A scientific graph is not simply an image beside the real question: its scales and relationship to the variables can contain most of the information needed to answer correctly.

Imagine a graph of speed against time. A student who knows the formula for acceleration still needs to understand that the gradient represents acceleration and that area under a speed–time graph has a different interpretation. If a graph is displacement against time, the meaning changes again. Using a remembered formula without reading the axes can produce a neat but wrong answer.

Good practice is to annotate units, label what each axis measures, state what trend is supported by the displayed data, and distinguish observation from explanation. A claim about cause must not be made solely because two variables are correlated.

What does Paper 2 reward?

Paper 2 contains structured and extended responses. It may require a student to connect two or more topics, justify a physical model, solve a calculation, describe an experimental limitation or explain a real-world consequence. A correct number without its meaning, unit or justification can be incomplete.

For a momentum problem, students should identify the system and any external forces before assuming momentum conservation. For an electrical circuit, they must distinguish current, voltage and resistance and understand which components are connected in series or parallel. For a nuclear question, they must determine which quantity remains conserved and what physical process is actually taking place.

A reliable exam routine is: read the whole question, identify the physical system and requested quantity, state the relevant principle, calculate with consistent units, check plausibility, then write the answer at the precision supported by the data. This costs attention at first but reduces repeated wrong-method errors.

The Physics scientific investigation: what counts for 20%?

The 2025-first-assessment Physics course uses one individual scientific investigation, marked by the teacher and externally moderated by the IB. The published guidance assigns 20% of the final Physics grade to it. The IB also describes a collaborative sciences project in which students can explore a real-world question across science disciplines; the collaborative project is not a second separately graded Physics IA in the same way.

Students should construct a feasible research question and choose suitable methods. It may involve experimental measurements, simulations or modelling where permitted, but it must satisfy school safety, authenticity, resource and curriculum rules. The student’s report should describe what they tested, how results were obtained, what uncertainty exists and which conclusions are defensible.

For example, a student could study how an adjustable physical parameter affects an oscillating system using safe approved apparatus. The important work is not making the experimental setup look elaborate. It is controlling other relevant factors, measuring consistently, plotting the data appropriately and explaining whether the model predicts the observed result.

A tutor or parent can help the learner understand scientific principles and plan time, but should not invent data, write an assessed report or bypass the school’s supervision and permitted-feedback rules.

How to test if a Physics IA idea is actually workable

Start by asking whether the independent and dependent variables can be measured safely and with sufficient precision. If the proposed effect is smaller than the measurement uncertainty, the project may fail to distinguish a real trend from noise. The student should perform a preliminary feasibility check under school guidance.

Next consider how repeated measurements, calibration and control variables affect confidence. A graph with a strong apparent line does not itself prove that an equation describes the system for all conditions. The student should say where the model applies, which assumptions are necessary and what alternative explanation could account for the result.

Finally, assess whether the experiment is ethically and practically permitted. An investigation involving high voltages, hazardous radiation or unsafe mechanical equipment is not made acceptable by the promise of an interesting graph. Choose an educationally useful question that can be answered with legitimate school resources.

How Physics HL relates to Mathematics AA and AI

Physics requires mathematical modelling. Students need confidence with rearranging equations, graphs, trigonometry, proportionality and, at more advanced levels, other mathematical concepts. This makes it sensible to consider Mathematics course selection at the same time as Physics, especially for university applications to physics, engineering or mathematical sciences.

Do not assume that Physics HL automatically requires IB Mathematics AA HL under IB rules, or that every university accepts Mathematics AI HL as equivalent to AA HL. The IB subject registrations and university-degree admissions conditions are distinct. Read the intended university’s precise mathematics prerequisite for the course and year.

A student with Physics HL and weak symbolic algebra may spend excessive time searching for a memorised formula. Repairing the algebra step may improve performance across topics more efficiently than repeated complete examinations. The goal is to preserve accurate physical meaning while learning mathematical procedures.

Physics HL for medicine, engineering and other degrees

For medicine in Singapore, NUS Medicine and NTU LKCMedicine publish an IB science baseline including Chemistry HL plus Biology HL or Physics HL. Physics HL can therefore satisfy the second named science in those specific current admissions criteria, but Chemistry HL remains required under the published baseline and all other admissions conditions still apply.

For engineering and physics degrees, the accepted combination may include Mathematics HL and Physics HL, with differing accepted mathematics courses or grades. Architecture, computing, environmental science and some other degrees can have different conditions. A student should retrieve official programme prerequisites before selecting HL subjects, rather than relying on a broad statement that Physics HL opens every STEM degree.

The student’s path is best determined backwards: shortlist actual university courses, identify mandatory subjects, then inspect school offerings and academic readiness.

A practical seven-week Physics study loop

Week one should be diagnostic. Select a few unfamiliar questions across motion, thermal physics, waves, fields and nuclear physics. Separate errors caused by missing concepts from those caused by choosing the wrong equation, misreading the graph, using inconsistent units or failing to justify an inference.

In weeks two and three, prioritise the most connected foundations, such as force diagrams, energy conservation, proportional reasoning and graph interpretation. Use worked examples for initial teaching but require the student to solve a changed question independently afterward. Spaced retrieval is more valuable than copying the same solution until it looks fluent.

Weeks four and five can focus on Paper 1B data and Paper 2 structured responses, with the applicable syllabus and teacher guidance. Week six adds realistic timed mixed-topic practice. Week seven reviews remaining weak links, checks permitted calculator use and makes the student explain answers without prompts.

This is an illustrative teaching sequence, not an IB-approved promise of a grade 7. A student who has not learned a topic needs instruction, not punishment through more tests.

Three fictional learners who need different support

Student A is very good at algebra but cannot describe the forces acting on an object. The first repair is physical modelling: drawing diagrams, identifying interactions and checking which laws apply. More equation manipulation would miss the problem.

Student B explains concepts well but drops negative signs, confuses kilograms with grams and uses incorrect units. The next step is a short, systematic check of symbolic operations and dimensional reasoning. Student C can complete routine examples but freezes on unfamiliar graphs; they need data interpretation and transfer practice.

The practical lesson is that “weak Physics” is not a diagnosis. Good teaching identifies where the reasoning chain actually fails and repairs the smallest important gap while keeping the whole subject connected.

Physics HL/SL decision checklist

  • Confirm which Physics course, SL or HL, the school offers for the 2027 examination session.
  • Use the guide first assessed in 2025; do not study from the obsolete option-paper structure.
  • Check the student’s algebra, trigonometry, graph interpretation and measurement skills.
  • Learn each of the five syllabus themes and the connections between energy, forces and particles.
  • Practise Paper 1A multiple choice, Paper 1B data and Paper 2 written reasoning separately.
  • Keep an error log that distinguishes missing concepts from incorrect routes and careless procedures.
  • Plan a safe, feasible and individual scientific investigation with school supervision.
  • Match Physics HL and the chosen Mathematics course against specific university prerequisites.
  • Schedule teacher feedback and repeated retrieval without overwhelming the student with past papers.
  • Add tuition only when the actual learning gap is clear.

Frequently asked questions

Does IB Physics have Paper 3 in 2027?

No. The 2025-first-assessment Physics course uses Paper 1A and 1B, Paper 2 and an internally assessed investigation.

What percentage is the Physics IA?

The official current Physics guide gives the individual scientific investigation 20% of the subject grade.

Is Physics HL 240 hours?

The IB recommends 240 teaching hours for HL and 150 for SL.

Can I do Physics HL without Mathematics AA HL?

It depends on school readiness and the university path. IB Physics registration and a university’s Mathematics prerequisite are different rules.

Does Physics HL count instead of Biology HL for NUS Medicine?
