For a GCE paper that permits calculators, SEAB says candidates may bring more than one approved calculator. Check the exact model of each device before packing it. Under the 2026 secondary GCE rules, candidates cannot share calculators during the examination.
Check that your calculators work and that their covers are free of notes or other prohibited information. SEAB’s 2026 secondary GCE rules say a calculator malfunction is not accepted as a reason for special consideration.
- Confirm that the paper permits calculator use.
- Check both models against the applicable approved list.
- Test both devices and inspect their covers.
- Ask the invigilator if a problem arises during the paper.
Check the spare as carefully as the main device
A spare has to meet the same approval and paper requirements. If it belongs to a family member, match its complete model code and check its condition and cover. See the approved calculator guide for the model check.
Practise a few calculations on the spare before exam day. If the key layout differs, familiarise yourself with the functions you normally use so a change of device takes less time.

If the main calculator stops working
Follow the paper and invigilator’s instructions. If you brought an approved spare, ask staff if you are unsure how to switch. Do not borrow a calculator from another candidate during the examination.
For example, a candidate whose display becomes unreadable can alert the invigilator and explain that they have a spare. They should follow staff directions and continue the paper under the applicable rules.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take an approved spare into a non-calculator paper for use?
Calculator use depends on the paper. Follow its instructions on where to leave any device that is not permitted.
Does a malfunction qualify me for special consideration?
The 2026 secondary GCE rules explicitly exclude calculator malfunction as a justification.
