Drift — The Canonical Definition in eduKateOS

Drift is the slow, often invisible decline of a system away from its safe operating boundaries.

In eduKateOS, drift is not a mood, not “lack of discipline,” and not a moral failure. Drift is a mechanism: small errors, small delays, and small mismatches accumulate until performance breaks.

Drift is the reason Phase 3 exists.

What Drift Means

Drift means the system is still “working,” but it is moving in the wrong direction.

Common drift patterns include:

• Output still looks acceptable, but requires more effort
• Errors increase slowly over time
• Recovery takes longer than before
• The system becomes more fragile under stress
• Variance increases (more good days and bad days)

Drift is dangerous because it feels manageable until it suddenly isn’t.

What Drift Is Not

Drift is NOT:

• Laziness
• Low intelligence
• “Not caring”
• A one-time bad day
• A sudden accident

Drift is slow and structural. Sudden failures can happen, but drift is what makes sudden failure likely.

Why Drift Happens

Drift occurs when one or more modules move out of alignment:

• Time and attention misallocated
• Practice becomes unbalanced (too narrow or too random)
• Feedback loops become weak or delayed
• Small misunderstandings compound
• Stress and fatigue reduce execution quality
• The environment changes (new syllabus, new role, new workload)

Drift is the normal default of all systems. Only Phase 3 prevents it.

Drift and Phase Boundaries

• Phase 0: drift has already crossed the failure boundary
• Phase 1: drift is converted into a diagnosable failure mode and repaired
• Phase 2: performance is rebuilt to a high standard
• Phase 3: drift is detected early and corrected before collapse

Canonical Boundary Rule

If you are not measuring drift, you are not controlling drift.
If you are not controlling drift, you will eventually return to Phase 0.
