Writing Clarity Index measures whether a learner’s writing is becoming:
- clearer
- more precise
- more coherent
- and less error-prone
Clarity is the real writing skill.
Fancy vocabulary without clarity lowers marks.
This sensor exists to protect writing from decorative complexity and drift.
What This Sensor Measures
Writing Clarity Index measures five components:
- sentence clarity
- sentences are readable and not tangled
- idea coherence
- ideas connect logically across sentences and paragraphs
- precision
- word choice matches meaning (no vague fillers)
- error density
- grammar, punctuation, and meaning errors per paragraph
- reader understanding
- can a reader summarise the writing easily?
Writing clarity is the gateway to scoring well consistently.
How to Read This Sensor
Writing clarity is healthy when:
- sentences are clean and direct
- paragraphs have one clear idea
- linking words are used correctly
- vocabulary is accurate and natural
- error density drops over time
- the writing “reads smoothly” without confusion
Writing clarity is weak when:
- sentences are long but unclear
- ideas jump without transitions
- vocabulary is forced
- meaning is slightly wrong
- grammar breaks under pressure
- the reader must guess what the writer means
Low clarity is usually not a “writing talent problem”.
It is often:
- comprehension weakness
- vocabulary precision weakness
- or lack of structure
Minimum Viable Test (So Clarity Exists)
A learner passes the minimum clarity test when:
- they can write one paragraph
- the paragraph has one main idea
- a reader can summarise it in one sentence
- fewer than 3 clarity-breaking errors appear in that paragraph
If the reader cannot summarise, clarity is failing.
Clarity Levels (Gauge Alignment)
Level 1 — Unclear
- reader struggles
- meaning is vague
- errors dominate
Level 2 — Partially Clear
- main idea exists
- but sentences are messy
- transitions are weak
Level 3 — Functional Clarity
- reader understands easily
- some awkwardness remains
- error density is moderate
Level 4 — Strong Clarity
- sentences are clean
- ideas flow logically
- vocabulary is precise
- error density is low
Level 5 — Compounding Clarity
- writing is naturally structured
- ideas build and deepen
- style emerges without losing clarity
- vocabulary upgrades safely
The One Mistake This Sensor Prevents
Students often chase “better vocabulary” and destroy clarity.
They write:
- longer sentences
- bigger words
- more complicated structures
But marks drop because clarity collapses.
Vocabulary OS rule applies:
simple word used perfectly > complex word used wrongly
This sensor keeps writing stable.
Repair Actions (If Clarity Is Weak)
- fence the sentence
Start simple, then expand carefully:
- base sentence
- add detail
- add cause-effect
- add emotion
This protects clarity.
- one paragraph = one idea
Force a single topic sentence. - reduce vocabulary forcing
Use only words the student can retrieve and use correctly. - repair recurring errors
Track the top 3 recurring clarity-breakers and eliminate recurrence. - upgrade structure before style
Structure first. Style later.
