Prevent Vocabulary Decay: Essential Review Techniques

Definition Lock

No Review Loop = learning words once (or “finishing a list”) without scheduled reuse, so vocabulary slowly disappears.

This is silent decay:

the child seems fine at first
then a few weeks later the words are “gone”
writing returns to basic vocabulary
parents feel confused and restart with a new list

Core failure: Vocabulary is a living skill. Without reuse, it decays.

1) What this looks like (Symptoms)

Parents often notice:

“We learned those words last month, but he doesn’t remember them.”
“She can recognise the words, but can’t use them anymore.”
“We keep doing new lists but nothing sticks.”
“He improves for a week, then slides back.”
“Vocabulary only appears right after studying, then disappears.”

This doesn’t mean your child has poor memory. It means the system has no maintenance.

2) Failure Mode Trace (short chain)

Learn word → use it once → stop practising → retrieval weakens → phrase frames fade → writing avoids the word → word becomes recognition-only → eventually forgotten

Writing is the filter:
If words aren’t reused in writing, they are the first to disappear.

3) Why review is different from “re-reading”

Many families “review” by:

rereading definitions
highlighting
looking at flashcards

That builds recognition, not production.

Real review = production review

phrases
sentences
mini paragraphs
short compositions

If review does not include output, decay continues.

4) The 2-Minute Micro-Test (detect it instantly)

Pick 5 words from 3–6 weeks ago.

Test A: Meaning check (60 seconds)

Ask: “Tell me what it means in your own words.”
If they can’t explain simply → meaning decayed.

Test B: Production check (60 seconds)

Ask: “Give me one phrase and one sentence for each word.”
If they recognise but can’t produce → decay confirmed.

Diagnosis: If old words fail production, you have a No Review Loop.

5) The Fenced Fix (what changes)

You do not need more lists.
You need a maintenance schedule.

Fence Rule 1 — Review must be scheduled

Review cannot be “when we remember.”

Fence Rule 2 — Review must be output-based

Minimum review unit:

1 phrase + 1 sentence (per word)

Fence Rule 3 — Review must include transfer

At least once a week:

mini paragraph or short composition reuse

6) The Fenced Fix: Step-by-step Repair

Step 1 — Use a simple “3-Bucket Review System”

Put words into 3 buckets:

Bucket A (New): words learned this week
Bucket B (Stabilising): words from last 2–3 weeks
Bucket C (Maintenance): older words (monthly reuse)

This keeps review light but consistent.

Step 2 — The Review Ladder (fast, reliable)

When reviewing a word, do it in this order:

meaning (one short line)
phrase anchor (one chunk)
sentence (one natural sentence)
optional: mini paragraph (2 sentences)

Do not spend 10 minutes per word. Spend 30–60 seconds.

Step 3 — Spaced “Return Days” (the schedule that prevents decay)

Use a predictable return pattern:

For each new word learned on Day 1:

Review on Day 2
Review on Day 4
Review on Day 7
Review on Day 14
Review on Day 30

You’re not cramming. You’re preventing decay.

Step 4 — Weekly Transfer Anchor (keeps words alive)

Once per week:

write a short composition (6–10 lines)
reuse 2–4 words from Bucket B/C

This turns vocabulary into long-term writing equipment.

Step 5 — Repair rules (don’t “review wrong”)

If a word fails review, do not just repeat the definition.

Repair the failed gate:

wrong meaning → meaning lock + “not this”
awkward phrase → rebuild phrase anchors
sentence breaks → sentence frame
forced usage → downgrade + rebuild naturalness

7) “This Week Plan” (Parent Operator Routine)

10–15 minutes/day

Works for any age that is writing.

Daily structure (simple):

5 minutes: Bucket A (new words)
5 minutes: Bucket B (stabilising words)
2–5 minutes: Bucket C (maintenance)

Example week

Day 1: Learn 8 new words (Bucket A)
Day 2: Review Bucket A (phrases + sentences)
Day 3: Add 4 new words + review Bucket B
Day 4: Review Bucket A + 2 mini paragraphs (Bucket B reuse)
Day 5: Short composition using 2–4 words from Bucket B/C
Weekend: Light review game + rewrite one paragraph naturally

This is small, repeatable, and prevents silent decay.

8) Safe AI Use (optional)

AI is good for generating review prompts and checking if a word was used naturally.

Child produces first. AI checks second.
