How to study Primary Subjects | MOE Syllabus Study Guide Hub

Three primary students sit around open books at a classroom table while one gives a thumbs-up, with stationery and a whiteboard of lesson notes nearby.

Choose your level and subject to find a step-by-step primary study guide. Each guide helps you identify a difficulty, understand an example, practise independently and check what improved. Start with the skill you need now rather than trying to read every guide at once.

This directory currently connects one hundred and ten guides: sixteen English, Mathematics and Science level guides, six separate Primary 5–6 Foundation guides in those subjects, and thirty-six Mother Tongue guides and six Primary 1–6 Art guides and six Primary 1–6 Music guides and six Primary 1–6 Physical Education guides and six Primary 1–6 Social Studies guides and six Primary 1–6 Character and Citizenship Education guides and two Primary 1–2 Programme for Active Learning support guides and ten focused English skill guides across Primary 1–6, six focused Mathematics guides for number bonds, regrouping, multiplication word problems, equivalent fractions, fraction word problems and ratio word problems, and four focused Science guides for classification, observation/explanation, fair tests and evidence-based open-ended answers. PAL is a programme within CCE, not a separate examined subject. The Mother Tongue route currently covers Primary 1–6 Chinese, Malay and Tamil, plus separate Primary 5–6 Foundation Chinese, Malay and Tamil guides, and Primary 3–6 Higher Chinese, Higher Malay and Higher Tamil guides. Choose the subject and programme that match school learning; all routes below lead to published articles.

These independent eduKateSG guides use MOE curriculum references and original teaching examples. Science formally begins at Primary 3; earlier science enrichment does not create a national P1 or P2 Science subject specification. At Primary 6, SEAB’s examination documents must be checked for the relevant year and programme.

STEP 1 OF 10

Choose the right starting point

Back to contents

Your current school level identifies the main guide, but an earlier level may help repair a prerequisite. If a P4 learner cannot compare tenths and hundredths, strengthen place value before pushing through harder decimal calculation. If a P5 learner reads fluently but makes unsupported inferences, practise linking clues with conclusions.

A return to an earlier skill is a practical repair, not a judgement about the learner. Choose a narrow section, practise it and return to current school work when the relationship is clearer.

STEP 7 OF 10

Primary 6: combine repair with examination preparation

Back to contents

The Primary 6 guides connect targeted practice with the current examination references. Choose the Standard, Higher or Foundation route that matches your school subject, and check the specification for your own cohort.

Separate Foundation English, Mathematics, Science, Chinese, Malay and Tamil guides are available above. Further subject and language variants will be added as the wider series continues.

STEP 8 OF 10

Use a guide in one complete learning loop

Back to contents

  1. Identify one difficulty from actual school work.
  2. Read the relevant explanation and worked example.
  3. Attempt a similar task without the solution visible.
  4. Check the cause of any mistake.
  5. Try a fresh task later with less prompting.

Do not confuse copying a correction with being able to use the skill again. The return task supplies useful evidence of independence.

STEP 9 OF 10

For parents and tutors

Back to contents

Observe before supplying a method. Ask the learner to explain what the question wants and what each quantity, clue or scientific feature means. The explanation can reveal whether support is needed in reading, understanding, organisation or recording.

Use school feedback to choose a realistic next step. Bring persistent difficulties to the teacher with examples. These articles provide study support; they do not set school assessment policy, guarantee results or replace the applicable syllabus.

STEP 10 OF 10

Official curriculum and examination references

Back to contents

MOE publishes teaching syllabuses. SEAB publishes national examination information. They serve related but different purposes. A primary teaching guide should not be presented as an examination paper specification for every level.

The series now includes English, Mathematics and Science routes and the opening Mother Tongue guides. Further language levels and programme variants will be added progressively. This directory describes current published coverage; it does not claim complete coverage of every primary subject or variant.
