Is Absolute Value Always Positive? | Bukit Timah Maths Tuition Guide

Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

Bukit Timah Maths Tuition Guide

Is absolute value always positive?

No. Absolute value is always non-negative. It is positive for every non-zero real number, but |0| = 0.

If your child says absolute value is always positive, the almost-correct idea needs one repair: distance cannot be negative, but it can be zero. Absolute value measures a number’s distance from zero on the number line.

Try this now: mark −4, 0 and 4 on a number line. Ask for each point’s distance from zero. The answers 4, 0 and 4 reveal both the symmetry and the zero exception.

This small vocabulary distinction matters later in inequalities, graphs and proofs. “Positive” means greater than zero; “non-negative” includes zero.

1. Build absolute value from distance

The absolute value of a real number is its distance from zero. Distance is reported without direction, so −5 and 5 have the same absolute value: |−5| = 5 and |5| = 5.

The vertical bars are an operation symbol, not brackets to remove casually. They tell the learner to find distance. That definition is more reliable than “make it positive,” because zero does not become positive and expressions can contain signs outside the bars.

Opposite numbers share an absolute value. That does not make the numbers equal: −7 ≠ 7, even though |−7| = |7|.

2. Separate positive from non-negative

A positive number is greater than zero. A non-negative number is greater than or equal to zero. Absolute value outputs are non-negative because no distance from zero can be less than zero.

For x ≠ 0, |x| > 0. For x = 0, |x| = 0. The complete statement is therefore |x| ≥ 0 for every real x.

Original teaching illustration: the distance counter

Imagine a counter that records how many units you walk from zero but ignores left or right. Walking nowhere records 0, not a positive distance. Walking three units in either direction records 3.

Ask the learner to improve the sentence “absolute value removes negatives.” A stronger version is “absolute value gives the distance from zero, so its value is never negative.”

3. Read signs outside the absolute-value bars

The value of |−4| is 4. But the value of −|−4| is −4 because the outside negative sign is applied after the absolute value is evaluated. The bars do not erase every negative sign in sight.

ExpressionFirst stepValue
|−4|distance of −4 from 04
−|−4|find |−4|, then take its opposite−4
|3 − 8|evaluate 3 − 8 = −55
|8 − 3|evaluate 8 − 3 = 55
2 − |−3|find |−3| = 3−1
Evaluate from the inside out.

The equality |a − b| = |b − a| expresses a distance between two points: reversing the order changes direction but not distance.

4. Solve and check simple absolute-value statements

If |x| = 3, then x can be 3 or −3 because both points are three units from zero. If |x| = 0, then x must be 0. If |x| = −2, there is no real solution because a distance cannot be negative.

Three checks before accepting an answer

  • Check the output: an absolute value cannot be negative.
  • Check both directions: a positive distance usually corresponds to two opposite points.
  • Check zero separately: zero has only one location and one solution.

This prevents a common half-answer in which the learner writes x = 3 but forgets x = −3. It also prevents invented real solutions for a negative target.

5. Diagnose the misconception and transfer it

A wrong answer may come from vocabulary, number-line understanding, order of operations or equation solving. Diagnosis comes before more practice: ask the learner to draw the distance, name which sign is inside the bars, and explain why zero is special.

Transfer the idea to coordinates and graphs. The expression |x − 2| measures distance from 2, not distance from zero. The graph y = |x| stays on or above the x-axis because its outputs are non-negative.

For Singapore families, Posting Groups PG1, PG2 and PG3 guide initial secondary-school posting; they are not G1, G2 and G3 subject levels. Under Full Subject-Based Banding, a student takes subjects at the applicable levels. From 2027, the GCE N(T)-, N(A)- and O-Level examinations are combined and renamed the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC); the relevant Mathematics syllabus depends on subject level, examination year and candidate type.

When tuition can help

Tuition can help when a learner remembers a shortcut but cannot explain zero, outside signs or two-solution equations. In a verified 3-pax setting, each student can draw, state and test the reasoning while feedback stays specific. The aim is independent transfer, not a guaranteed grade.

Sources and scope

The number-line, distance-counter and equation checks are original teaching illustrations. They explain general real-number mathematics; current school scope should be checked against the applicable syllabus.
