More than three decades of archaeological work have recovered very large quantities of material from the Temasek and post-1819 periods. The pre-1350 material supports the existence of a sophisticated, multicultural port society with long-distance commercial links, although researchers still know much less about its complete political and social organisation than about later Singapore. The 1819 settlement did not begin on an empty geographical canvas. It created a new British-controlled port within an older Malay maritime and political region.
