MOE Flexi-Adjunct Teacher Singapore | REMS Registration, Hourly Pay and School Duties

Teachers review textbooks and lesson plans together while planning a subject curriculum.

Quick answer. The MOE Flexi-Adjunct Teacher (FAJT) scheme allows eligible teaching professionals to take up shorter-term or flexible assignments in Singapore schools. It is not the same as signing up to be a temporary relief educator, and “flexi” does not mean duties are limited to a lesson or two with no preparation. FAJTs may teach classes and undertake related school responsibilities within their engagement. Recruitment and engagement processes use MOE’s Registration and Engagement Management System (REMS 2.0); applicants must follow the current requirements and instructions from the Ministry and the school.

This is most relevant to educators considering a different working pattern after full-time teaching, returning to school service or exploring a shorter appointment. Before applying, check three things separately: are you eligible for the scheme, what responsibilities may the school assign, and how will paid hours be recorded? An FAJT may perform both classroom and non-classroom work. In a parliamentary reply dated 10 September 2026, the Minister for Education said FAJTs are paid hourly, hours are capped and schools are guided to keep assigned duties within the paid hours. That is more useful than an unsupported claim that adjunct work has no workload.

  • Scheme: Flexi-Adjunct Teacher (FAJT), not the Scheme for Relief Educators (SRE).
  • Registration: check eligibility and the correct REMS 2.0 category before submitting documents.
  • Work: lessons, classroom management, attendance, marking and other assigned duties may apply.
  • Pay: hourly and tier-dependent; avoid assuming the same annual package as a full-time teacher.
  • 2027 planning: verify the current school engagement and MOE terms; a historic 2026 answer does not guarantee unchanged future rates.

What is an MOE Flexi-Adjunct Teacher?

Schools need temporary or additional manpower for several reasons. A regular teacher may be on extended leave, a school may require extra instructional support or an approved programme may need classroom coverage. An FAJT can help the school sustain teaching while the employment arrangement is more limited than a permanent full-time teaching post.

The key word is adjunct, not easy. Classrooms still need planning and safeguarding. Students need continuity, lesson materials and accurate feedback. When a class is assigned to an FAJT, the teacher may be responsible for normal classroom management and appropriate communication with colleagues. The particular assignment must be read in the context of the current MOE policy and the school’s engagement terms.

On 10 September 2026, a parliamentary reply addressed common misunderstandings about the scheme. The reply explained that FAJTs undertake teaching and non-teaching duties, potentially including form teachership and co-curricular activity duties, and that paid hours are subject to a cap. It also clarified that teachers who resigned and teachers on no-pay leave are engaged on the same FAJT terms. This does not mean each school assigns identical tasks or that every candidate can choose every preferred working hour.

FAJT, SRE, contract adjunct and permanent teacher: what is different?

ArrangementWhat to expectWhat not to assume
Flexi-Adjunct Teacher (FAJT)Eligible teachers engaged for flexible or time-limited school staffing needs; hourly pay modelNo preparation, marking or school duties beyond classroom delivery
Scheme for Relief Educators (SRE)Registered relief educators supplying temporary cover under a distinct schemeThat SRE registration equals trained-teacher FAJT eligibility
Contract Adjunct TeacherContractual teaching appointment where offered, with its own termsThat FAJT hourly structure and all benefits transfer automatically
Permanent full-time MOE teacherOngoing teaching career with separate appointment and employment packageThat salary, bonuses and career arrangements equal an FAJT package

Registration and engagement are distinct steps. Having a profile in a system does not automatically establish that a school has hired you, and registration under one scheme does not establish eligibility for another. A useful check is to ask the school which scheme will govern the assignment and what written agreement records the work.

For people who are not trained teachers or who want occasional classroom cover, read our separate guide to MOE Relief Teacher Application — SRE Registration. For graduates pursuing a full teacher-training route, read MOE PGDE Application rather than treating FAJT as an automatic training shortcut.

Who is eligible for Flexi-Adjunct teaching?

Eligibility is defined by the current scheme rules, education and teaching qualifications, records and any other applicable requirements. A past teaching career does not exempt someone from providing the required documents, fulfilling administrative checks or following registration steps. Nor does holding a university degree alone necessarily confer trained-teacher eligibility. Read the correct REMS category and linked MOE scheme material.

Former teachers and educators considering an FAJT arrangement should clarify whether they remain in service on no-pay leave, have resigned or have retired. The 2026 parliamentary reply says the same FAJT engagement terms apply to those who resigned and those on no-pay leave; this is an employment-terms clarification, not permission to ignore the person’s underlying employment, leave or approval obligations.

Practical questions before applying include: Am I registered under the correct category? Are my qualifications still valid for the subjects and levels involved? Do I have current records of previous teaching experience? Does my own employment status impose conditions? How does the scheme handle a lapse in availability or return to service? If unsure, seek clarification through official MOE channels.

How to register or update details in REMS 2.0

  1. Start from an official MOE source. See MOE Careers and its adjunct and relief schemes information.
  2. Use the registration system. Open MOE REMS 2.0 in a supported browser and select the FAJT scheme, not the SRE category by mistake.
  3. Check instructions before uploading. Review the scheme-specific eligibility and requested supporting documents. Do not submit an incomplete or contradictory profile.
  4. Keep your contact information current. Phone, email and available assignments must be accurate so any engagement can be communicated.
  5. Wait for confirmation. Registration, eligibility review, selection and actual school engagement are separate decisions.
  6. Review the school offer. Before accepting, confirm subject, class, school, dates, expected duties, reporting arrangements and how time will be recorded.

The Singapore Teachers’ Union published an explanatory note identifying REMS 2.0 categories including FAJ Teacher, FAJ(SEN Officer), FAJ(School Counsellor), FAJ(MOE Kindergarten Educator), SRE and other relief arrangements. Its note stresses complete documentation. The login and instructions shown in the current MOE portal take precedence over an older user guide.

Some official systems may require accounts, appropriate permissions or supported browsers. Use only the authentic MOE domain, not a third-party “job registration” site that collects personal credentials. If the portal is inaccessible, check the official help information instead of sending identification documents to an unsolicited contact.

Does an FAJT only teach lessons, or are other duties included?

Many applicants understandably want to know whether they can decline form teachership, marking or co-curricular duties. A straightforward answer is that no universal “lessons only” entitlement follows simply from the term flexi-adjunct. The September 2026 parliamentary explanation specifically recognised both teaching and non-teaching duties, potentially including form teachership and CCA responsibilities. The school must keep assigned responsibilities within paid-hour rules.

Classroom teaching

Teaching a class means more than standing at the front. Students need lesson objectives, explanations, checking of understanding, routines, feedback and an appropriate handover of progress. For a longer assignment, the school may expect consistency across multiple weeks. A teacher should ask what curriculum content and previous assessments have already been completed before changing the direction of a class.

Form teachership and student well-being

If form-teacher responsibilities are part of an engagement, clarify the exact scope, student records, attendance and required communication channels. A temporary teacher should not improvise a separate personal record system. In cases involving pupil welfare or sensitive information, use the school’s authorised safeguarding and escalation processes.

Co-curricular and event responsibilities

CCA, examinations or other school functions may be included depending on the assignment. Applicants should understand which hours are paid, how scheduling is agreed, what supervision is expected and whether the work requires any certification or clearance. A 45-minute classroom period and a full event duty are not necessarily recorded in the same way.

A good question before accepting is: “Can you walk me through a normal week, including teaching, marking, form-teacher work, meetings and other assigned hours?” This is more informative than assuming that flexibility means choosing only the most convenient periods.

How are FAJTs paid? Hourly rates, capped hours and benefits

The official parliamentary record states that FAJTs are remunerated hourly and their hours are capped. An earlier parliamentary reply described payment tiers based primarily on teaching experience, and explained that FAJTs do not receive the same bonuses and retention payments as regular full-time teachers. Annual pay cannot therefore be compared simply by multiplying a full-time teacher’s monthly base salary into an equivalent “flexi” rate.

Ask which tier applies to your experience and which activities count as approved work. Clarify record-keeping for classroom periods, preparation, assessment, meetings, duties, public holidays and training if applicable. School-specific instructions can explain day-to-day claims but should be read alongside current MOE-wide employment terms.

Example: why comparing hourly pay with monthly pay is misleading

Imagine two qualified teachers, one permanent full-time and one engaged as an FAJT. Both might teach the same learning topic. But their obligations and packages can differ: annual bonuses, paid time, career responsibilities, leave entitlements and the duration of appointments all matter. An hourly figure cannot establish an equivalent annual take-home amount without the approved hours and exact benefits.

Instead of asking only “What’s the hourly rate?”, ask: Which paid hours are expected in an ordinary week? Which tasks are included? Is there a first-hour or other applicable premium? What is the time-claim process? Are any public holidays, leave days or training hours payable under my contract? How is the work scheduled during school terms? Seek a written answer where possible.

Are there school-holiday hours?

A publicly available school staff handbook describes tight rules around holiday deployment and the need for specific prior approval. This is one school-level operating example, not proof of an identical entitlement or restriction for every 2027 engagement. Applicants must confirm their own school’s arrangements and the current centrally applicable rules.

Three FAJT assignment examples

Case 1: covering a mathematics class for several weeks

A secondary mathematics teacher goes on approved leave. An FAJT is engaged to preserve learning continuity. Before lessons begin, the FAJT needs the class’s current topic, known misconceptions, assessment schedule, access to approved materials and the handover contact. A good first lesson checks understanding of the most recent taught concept rather than jumping to the FAJT’s favourite method.

When the original teacher returns, the handover should record what content was taught, what students struggled with and any assessment still pending. Attendance and sensitive pupil matters remain within authorised school systems. The aim is minimal disruption for students, not just covering the timetable.

Case 2: supporting a targeted small-group programme

A school assigns an FAJT to support students needing additional practice. The school should define whether the role is to provide new instruction, reteach known content or supervise structured exercises. A student may benefit from clearer worked examples and immediate feedback, but the teacher should still coordinate with the students’ subject teachers so methods and assessment targets remain coherent.

Useful outcomes include whether students can explain a key concept without prompts and whether their errors change after guided work. A group session should not be evaluated solely by how many worksheets were completed.

Case 3: a form-teacher responsibility appears mid-engagement

An FAJT initially expects subject lessons but is asked to take on a class’s form-teacher duty. Instead of accepting an unclear informal arrangement, the applicant should seek clarification of the schedule, paid hours, responsible school leader, privacy procedures and handover. The school needs flexibility, but hours and duties must remain consistent with the actual engagement terms.

This is why practical questions before signing are worthwhile. They prevent avoidable misunderstandings without treating the school or teacher as an adversary.

How can an FAJT obtain access to Singapore Student Learning Space?

Singapore’s SLS information site, updated 20 October 2026, explains that some non-permanent teachers—including flexi-adjunct and relief teachers—may need school-initiated application for access through MIMS. The SLS account is generally ready around three days after access is granted via MIMS, according to the official guidance. This is an access-processing detail, not a promise that any registered FAJT can activate their own school account immediately.

For a new assignment, ask who the local MIMS administrator is and when the school will arrange access. Do not use a permanent teacher’s login or send passwords through informal messages to bypass an access delay. The school should provide the correct process for digital lessons, records and communications.

Read the official SLS guide to activating teacher accounts and the teacher login troubleshooting guide if access has been authorised but is not yet working.

Four-week preparation and decision plan

Week 1: check your scheme eligibility, teaching qualifications and current employment status. If you were previously a full-time MOE teacher, review any relevant service, leave or administrative obligations before registering.

Week 2: complete or update the correct REMS 2.0 profile with accurate documents. Prepare a concise summary of subjects, teaching levels, recent experience and the type of school work you can realistically accept.

Week 3: rehearse a complete teaching sequence with clear goals, error diagnosis and a handover plan. Decide which days, travel distances and types of duties are workable for you; leave room for the school’s actual needs.

Week 4: review any engagement offer in writing. Ask about teaching load, non-teaching duties, paid-time claims, hourly tier, school systems, supervision and start and end dates. If no offer arrives, keep records current but do not mistake a registration profile for a guaranteed paid placement.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone who has resigned from teaching join FAJT?

The scheme is used by former teachers. The September 2026 parliamentary reply says those who resigned and those on no-pay leave are engaged on the same FAJT terms. Individual eligibility must still be confirmed.

Can I refuse all CCAs and form-teacher duties?

Do not assume you have a universal right to decline every non-classroom duty. Published ministerial clarification states FAJTs can be assigned such work, within the paid-hour arrangements.

Is there an hourly cap?

Yes, MOE’s September 2026 parliamentary reply refers to capped hours. Check the applicable current scheme and engagement for the detailed limit.

Are FAJTs paid like full-time teachers?

No. Hourly tiers and annual full-time remuneration packages are different; some full-time bonuses do not apply.

Does registering through REMS guarantee a school assignment?

No. Registration, eligibility and actual school engagement are separate stages.

Do I use the same registration as an SRE relief educator?

Both may use REMS 2.0, but they are different schemes and categories. Choose the correct one.

Can an FAJT access SLS?

Eligible FAJTs can receive access through the school’s MIMS procedures. Activation must be authorised; it is not automatic from REMS registration.

What if I am asked to do unpaid work?

Clarify the task, approved hours and reporting process with the school. MOE has stated that duties should remain within paid hours.

Can I choose one school near home?

Preference is not a guarantee. Verify availability, travel expectations and actual assignment details with the employer.

Is this suitable for someone who has never been a trained teacher?

Do not assume so. Review FAJT eligibility separately from relief educator and initial teacher-training routes.
