Should I be worried if my child wants to register G3 Art, Higher Art, Music, Drama, Electronics, D&T, NFS or ESS as a 2027 SEC private candidate? The issue is the official subject menu, not talent. SEAB’s G3 private-candidate list has 44 codes and omits these school-managed subjects. Parents should not buy coursework or promise a qualification before confirming the correct registration route.
The 2027 G3 school-candidate roster has 57 codes, whereas the private-candidate roster has 44. The private list differs in both directions: several school-only portfolios, practical and performance subjects are absent, while private entries such as Islamic Religious Knowledge K363 and Arabic K386 require separate attention. Use the full K-code, year and candidate type.

The first useful decision
Identify the child’s intended qualification and future destination, then confirm the code in the SEAB private list. Ask the school or examining authority about any genuine alternative. Do not mistake a valid school-candidate syllabus PDF, rehearsal course or home portfolio for permission to enter the national examination privately.

1. A private-candidate restriction is not a judgement of talent
A student who loves performing, designing, drawing or sport may be discouraged to learn that a favourite G3 subject appears on SEAB’s school list but not on the 2027 private list. The difference concerns examination access, not whether the young person has talent or can learn.
The national examination separates school-candidate and private-candidate subject offerings. The private list identifies which K-codes can be considered through the private registration route, subject to personal eligibility.
The practical question is which qualifications are genuinely available and how those relate to the student’s intended next step. Start with that rather than a comparison of children’s hobbies or abilities.
Valuable artistic, technical and sporting learning can continue outside national examination entries. The family should preserve those interests while making accurate formal choices.
2. Check both G3 directories, not just a PDF title
The 2027 G3 school-candidate directory lists fifty-seven codes, including coursework-intensive subjects. The G3 private-candidate directory lists forty-four codes, with a different composition.
Some school entries are missing privately, and a couple of private-only options appear, so neither list is simply a shorter alphabetical copy of the other.
Parents must read the actual registration category. A PDF titled 2027 G3 Higher Art can be genuine without proving a private candidate may register for the subject.
Use both official rosters and the candidate’s real registration route before choosing a course or paying fees.
3. The key school-only creative and practical subjects
The 2027 G3 private roster does not list Art K347, Higher Art K348, Music K350, Higher Music K351, Drama K352, Electronics K353, Design and Technology K345, Nutrition and Food Science K346 or Exercise and Sports Science K354.
All these appear in the official school-candidate list. The distinction is particularly important where a supervised portfolio, recital, project, food investigation or practical performance forms part of assessment.
A portfolio made independently does not automatically become an accepted privately examined paper.
Families should confirm any special individual arrangement with SEAB before making claims about exam access or certificate recognition.
4. G3 Art and Higher Art are different but both school-listed
The school catalogue offers Art K347 and Higher Art K348. Their formal course work and Higher Art award arrangements differ, but both are absent from the 2027 G3 private catalogue.
Choosing the higher course name cannot bypass a candidate-type restriction. An impressive sketchbook also cannot by itself establish the required school assessment arrangements.
Art practice remains educationally worthwhile, with visual observation, interpretation and creative expression developing over time.
A family considering a portfolio-based next course should check that institution’s actual entry requirements rather than claim the private SEC awards either Art code.
5. Music K350 and Higher Music K351 are not private options
The school list includes G3 Music and Higher Music, each with listening, creating and performing requirements. Higher Music adds a separate elective under the school-candidate framework.
Neither K350 nor K351 appears in the 2027 G3 private-candidate subject menu. An external instrument grade or music-school recital does not create an SEC Music grade.
A learner can continue serious musical education, performances and independent practice without mislabelling the qualification.
If a future programme requests music evidence, check its rules about auditions or external certificates separately; never assume every musical credential is equivalent.
6. Drama K352 is a school assessment, not an open performance submission
The G3 school examination includes scripted and group-devised performance, written analysis and a Development Journal. Its authentic process and moderation requirements are part of the qualification.
The private G3 directory does not list K352. A home-recorded monologue or private drama workshop cannot automatically replace the formal coursework entry.
The student can still learn voice, interpretation, stagecraft and collaboration through safe, appropriate theatre activities.
Parents can be optimistic about creative growth without making a misleading promise that an unofficial recording will be assessed by SEAB.
7. Electronics K353 cannot be entered simply by building a gadget
G3 Electronics appears on the school roster with written theory and a supervised electronic project. The 2027 private list does not include K353.
A student may enjoy designing circuits or understanding sensors, yet still lack an official private route for this particular examined project.
Encourage safe conceptual study and teacher-approved technical enrichment. Do not recreate unsafe electrical experiments or handle charged components at home to imitate the assessment.
When a candidate needs an official technical qualification, check actually offered codes and later destination requirements rather than invent private coursework access.
8. Exercise and Sports Science K354 is separate from PE and CCA
The school-only G3 ESS subject assesses theory, selected physical activities and a Development Log under supervised conditions. It is not the same thing as compulsory Physical Education or a sports CCA.
K354 is absent from the 2027 private-candidate roster. Playing on a club team or keeping a personal fitness diary does not automatically constitute nationally examined ESS coursework.
A family can value safe physical activity, coaching and sportsmanship independently of that certification.
The next decision should use reliable information about formal admissions and appropriate participation opportunities, not pressure to perform an unapproved practical examination.
9. Nutrition and Food Science K346 has its own coursework rules
The school G3 NFS syllabus includes written assessment and a supervised food investigation. Authentic experimental, practical and reflective evidence matters to its assessment.
K346 is not listed for 2027 private registration. Making dishes at home, compiling photographs or paying for a report does not establish official coursework eligibility.
Parents can discuss consumer literacy and basic food science safely while preserving any individual medical or allergy safeguards.
Avoid representing unexamined home activities as K346 evidence. Only the examining authority and approved school arrangements can confirm formal assessment routes.
10. Design and Technology K345 is not privately listed
G3 D&T combines written design understanding with assessed project work under official school conditions. It is not identical to informal making or a short commercial workshop.
The 2027 private roster excludes K345. A child who enjoys technical sketching and evaluating user needs can still develop those interests through suitable safe activities.
A portfolio of independently documented designs may be valuable for learning or some other application, if that institution accepts it, but it is not an automatic SEC D&T grade.
Safety, authorship and honest descriptions of the work remain important whichever learning route the family follows.
11. Biotechnology K375 and Design Studies K376 have special access
The school-candidate G3 Applied Subjects catalogue includes Biotechnology K375 and Design Studies K376, limited to approved schools with their own fee and project arrangements.
Neither code appears in the 2027 G3 private list. The fact that a subject is called applied does not turn it into a general private entry open to anyone paying a fee.
The existing syllabus information also flags 2028 as the planned final examination year for these G3 Applied Subjects, making the examination cohort and school offering especially important.
Ask the school and SEAB rather than invent an entry route or a future availability promise.
12. The two Special Programmes are not private roster entries
G3 Chinese (Special Programme) K364 and Malay (Special Programme) K365 appear on the 2027 school-candidate list but not on the general G3 private-candidate menu.
Their names resemble ordinary Chinese K320 or Malay K321, which are separately listed privately and have different curriculum and examination aims.
Do not assume that studying a language informally qualifies someone for every named school programme.
The correct full subject title and K-code protect a student’s planning from an error caused by familiar language names.
13. Third-language Arabic and Bahasa Indonesia are distinct entries
The school G3 roster lists Arabic as a Third Language K366 and Bahasa Indonesia as a Third Language K367. These are not shown on the 2027 G3 private list.
The private list instead includes a separate Arabic K386 entry. Similarity in the word Arabic is not evidence that the private course and school third-language course share a paper.
Check the official language and candidate category before choosing instructional material, especially when a learner has studied it in another programme.
A correct code matters more than a shortened subject label in a marketing brochure.
14. Islamic Religious Knowledge K363 is a private-only distinction
The 2027 private G3 local-subject list includes Islamic Religious Knowledge K363, which does not appear on the school G3 roster used for comparison here.
The official private page also includes a specific note about its treatment in JC and Millennia Institute aggregate computations. Families should consult the authority’s current admissions rules rather than make broad promises.
This illustrates why school and private rosters differ in both directions, not only through coursework omissions.
The lesson is to inspect the precise candidate type, examination code and intended destination rather than treat one catalogue as universal.
15. G3 private Physics, Chemistry and Biology are listed
Unlike many portfolio and performance subjects, the G3 private roster does include Physics K323, Chemistry K324 and Biology K325.
Their practical and other examination components remain governed by official syllabuses and examination centre arrangements. A listed science code is not permission to improvise hazardous experiments at home.
A student may find these subjects suitable depending on background knowledge and future requirements, but each needs a proper preparation plan.
Parents should verify individual registration eligibility and all paper details before making promises about a science qualification.
16. G3 Computing K349 is a genuine private option
The private list includes G3 Computing K349, with a written paper and a software-based practical lab examination. The published software information names Excel, Python and JupyterLab Desktop.
That is a different form of assessment from the Electronics K353 supervised physical project and cannot be described as the same qualification.
A learner interested in computing may find it a meaningful option if prepared for the real syllabus, not simply because its title sounds related to gadgets.
Ask about the lab, software and examination arrangements directly and check the intended destination’s prerequisites.
17. Business and Economics are available under private codes
The 2027 private catalogue includes G3 Economics K343 and Business K344, alongside Principles of Accounts K342. These differ in learning focus and examination structure.
A parent should not assume Business coursework is an alternative to an Art portfolio. The subject develops knowledge of organisations, markets or financial information rather than the same creative objectives.
Review actual paper requirements and the child’s interests before deciding which is appropriate.
Choosing a valid qualification should be an informed educational decision, not a rushed attempt to replace one word on a certificate with another.
18. A private route should be tied to the learner’s purpose
If the family wants an SEC grade for post-secondary application, the relevant admission conditions determine which subjects and levels matter.
If the immediate goal is creative enrichment, a supervised independent course or personal portfolio may be valuable even without a national grade.
Those two purposes can coexist, but it is misleading to use one as proof of the other.
Discuss the intended destination with the school or appropriate admissions authority before committing substantial time to an unlisted private subject.
19. Official registration rules apply beyond the subject name
The SEC overview says eligible private candidates register through SEAB’s Candidates Portal. Individual circumstances, age and other restrictions require checking in the year-specific registration instructions.
A school-enrolled learner should not assume private registration is available as a workaround for a subject-combination disagreement.
Do not rely on an unofficial agent or a guessed timetable from the 2026 GCE system.
A sound plan records what SEAB has confirmed, what remains uncertain and which official contact can resolve the question.
20. A family can maintain creativity without mislabelling it
Independent art, music, drama, design, food projects and sport can support intellectual, cultural and physical development.
The student may document genuine work and what they learnt from feedback, using appropriate safety and privacy safeguards.
Such evidence can be discussed with relevant future institutions if those institutions accept it, but it should never be presented as a nationally moderated SEC project when it was not.
Honest ownership preserves the value of real learning and avoids the temptation to fabricate an examination history.
21. Can home Art portfolios become G3 Art marks?
The 2027 private-candidate list omits both G3 Art K347 and Higher Art K348. A self-developed portfolio can be excellent evidence of creativity without constituting assessed SEC Art work. Official school supervision and the registered examination route are different questions from personal artistic achievement.
Ask the destination institution if it accepts independent portfolio evidence, and document authentic sketches, observations, choices and revisions rather than trying to recreate national coursework.
Never state that a private collection has been moderated by SEAB when it has not. Honest ownership preserves learning value.
22. Can an acting teacher register G3 Drama privately?
G3 Drama K352 appears in the 2027 school list, not the G3 private list. Its scripted performance, group-devised piece and Development Journal follow school-candidate conditions. A reputable acting teacher can build expressive confidence without having authority to manufacture a private K352 entry.
Ask any programme whether it offers enrichment, its own completion certificate or an officially registered national examination; verify the last claim with SEAB.
Rehearsal and performance are still worthwhile, but a private recording should not be sold as moderated Drama coursework.
23. Does an instrument grade substitute for Music?
G3 Music K350 and Higher Music K351 include specific listening, creating, performing and reflection tasks. Neither is listed for G3 private candidates in 2027. An external music examination is a separate credential with its own objectives and awarding body.
A family interested in a later music course should ask whether the institution considers auditions, portfolios or external certificates under its own published selection rules.
A good musical achievement deserves recognition without being inaccurately relabelled as an SEC Music grade.
24. A home electronics project does not give K353 access
Electronics K353 combines a written paper with a supervised electronic project. The private G3 catalogue does not list it, even though the school-candidate syllabus PDF is public. Building a gadget independently is not equivalent to a moderated national project.
A learner interested in electronics can safely study conceptual diagrams, logic and relevant computing skills while considering an officially available qualification.
Do not attempt household mains work, capacitor discharge procedures or other hazardous practical experiments to imitate the school assessment.
25. Competitive sport is separate from K354 ESS
The school G3 ESS course K354 has theory, practical performance and a Development Log. These assessment components differ from compulsory PE, a sports CCA or an external club competition. The code is absent from the 2027 private roster.
Continue suitable coached participation and record genuine progress, but ask the intended future institution how it treats sporting achievements separately from SEC grades.
No club medal, training diary or coach’s letter automatically becomes moderated K354 coursework.
26. Food Science investigation cannot be privately self-submitted
G3 Nutrition and Food Science K346 is a school-listed course that includes a formal food investigation and report. Its code is absent from the G3 private list. A student may understand cooking science but cannot establish registration merely by compiling a recipe portfolio.
Families can encourage safe consumer literacy and food-science reasoning without constructing fake assessment data or images.
Personal allergy or medical concerns need individual guidance, and national coursework remains governed by the official approved arrangements.
27. D&T and Design Studies are separate unlisted qualifications
Design and Technology K345 and Design Studies K376 have different course goals, even though both can involve user needs, design decisions and prototypes. Both are school-listed and absent from the 2027 G3 private-candidate menu.
Check a later course’s accepted prerequisites rather than switch between similar titles hoping to solve the access problem.
Safe drawings and design inquiry retain educational value, but an independently made prototype is not automatically national assessed coursework.
28. Biotechnology is an approved-school Applied Subject
Biotechnology K375 appears in the G3 school Applied Subject category, limited to approved schools with a prescribed structured project. It is not privately listed for the 2027 examination. The similar subject Biology K325 is separately available to private candidates.
Ask which biological concepts the child wants to study and whether Biology’s actual syllabus serves a meaningful qualification goal.
No one should attempt unapproved culturing or laboratory processes at home to recreate the Biotechnology project.
29. Special Programme languages need their exact K-codes
G3 Chinese (Special Programme) K364 and Malay (Special Programme) K365 appear on the school roster but not the published private one. Standard G3 Chinese K320 and Malay K321 are different courses with their own examination aims.
A parent should confirm the full subject title, code, candidate type and language expectations before arranging instruction.
Names that share the word Chinese or Malay are not evidence of identical qualification or private registration access.
30. Arabic codes are not interchangeable
School-candidate Arabic as a Third Language K366 and Bahasa Indonesia as a Third Language K367 are absent from the ordinary 2027 G3 private list. Private candidates separately have Arabic K386, an individually named local-subject route.
Always verify which syllabus governs writing, reading and any oral or listening components, rather than using only a familiar language label.
A tutor’s use of the word Arabic does not establish permission to register for either national code.
31. Private-only IRK K363 has important conditions
Islamic Religious Knowledge K363 appears in SEAB’s G3 private list, while absent from the general G3 school roster. SEAB separately notes that Religious Knowledge cannot be used as a best-scoring subject for JC and Millennia Institute aggregate computation.
Families considering the subject should read the actual eligibility, paper and admission rules before assuming it fits an intended programme.
This example shows why the private list differs in both directions, not simply by removing all school coursework.
32. Some science practical examinations are available privately
G3 Physics K323, Chemistry K324 and Biology K325 all appear on the private-candidate list. A practical assessment within an officially listed subject is different from access to unlisted school coursework.
Ask SEAB about approved centres, candidate arrangements and the precise paper structure before planning practical preparation.
Safety matters: private registration does not mean students should improvise experiments using risky materials or unauthorised laboratory equipment.
33. G3 Computing K349 is listed as a separate private paper
Computing K349 is available through the published private G3 menu, with a written paper and a laboratory examination using approved software. SEAB identifies Excel, Python and JupyterLab Desktop in its private-candidate information.
A learner interested in digital systems can explore that syllabus while recognising it differs substantially from Electronics K353 and its physical project.
Check readiness and destination requirements instead of assuming any computing qualification automatically substitutes for engineering coursework.
34. Business, Economics and POA are real but different options
The private G3 menu lists Business K344, Economics K343 and Principles of Accounts K342. Business deals with organisations, Economics with markets and choice, and POA with accounting records and decisions.
A student may enjoy one of these without it being equivalent to a portfolio or performance subject. Try a genuine syllabus-aligned diagnostic before selecting.
A paper being privately available is not proof that it meets every later course’s specified prerequisite.
35. Humanities and Literature have genuine private routes
The private G3 roster includes specified combined Humanities choices, standalone History and Geography and language-based Literature courses. These develop research, comprehension, contextual knowledge and supported interpretation.
They may suit someone interested in culture or social questions but do not assess the same capabilities as a scripted Drama performance.
The candidate must identify the complete K-code and all compulsory papers rather than rely on a shortened label.
36. Foreign languages have distinct registration conditions
G3 private candidates can find several foreign and regional language courses, including French, German, Japanese, Spanish and Thai, where listed. Each has its own specified syllabus and examination arrangements.
A learner’s proficiency and future purpose should drive any choice, subject to the examination’s actual eligibility criteria.
Do not promise that an unrelated language pass replaces an Art or Music entry merely because both can express culture.
37. Admissions prerequisites are more important than title similarity
An intended post-secondary course may specify particular SEC subjects, G-levels, aggregate scores or alternative selection evidence. Those requirements matter more than a parent’s assumption that one qualification sounds similar to another.
Check the destination’s current official instructions and ask how independent portfolios, if permitted, are assessed separately.
A good subject decision preserves options without promising that every private G3 pass serves the same admissions purpose.
38. A younger student needs the applicable later-year directory
The rosters being compared describe 2027, the first SEC examination year. They should not be turned into an absolute claim about every future year for a child still in lower secondary.
Before committing money or time for a later cohort, check that cohort’s syllabus, subject availability and candidate-type rules.
The durable habit is verifying the year, K-code and examination status, not retaining a static list forever.
39. Returning to school depends on formal arrangements
A child who wants an assessed creative subject may ask whether a school-based route is possible. The answer depends on actual admissions, age, course offerings and relevant MOE or school rules.
A school-candidate subject appearing on SEAB’s list does not imply that every institution teaches it or must admit a particular private applicant.
Seek direct advice from the responsible authority rather than promise a transfer or subject-level change.
40. Private examination eligibility is an individual question
SEAB’s SEC overview describes registration through the Candidates Portal for applicants meeting conditions such as age. A listed subject is only one part of a valid entry.
Current school enrolment, personal eligibility, examination centre arrangements and the 2027 registration instructions need to be checked before submitting an application.
Avoid assuming that a school-enrolled pupil can use the private route to bypass an unsatisfactory timetable.
41. Commercial coursework offers require verification
A provider might offer national-style Art, Drama or Music portfolio support while using ambiguous language about certificates. The official published 2027 private subject list remains the starting point for assessing any claimed registration.
Ask whether the payment buys teaching, a private completion award or an official SEC examination, and require documentary proof for the latter.
Honest enrichment is worthwhile; an unavailable national examination should not be marketed as guaranteed access.
42. Authentic non-exam work can still be valuable
The learner can document independent drawings, music, drama practice, design thinking or sport through real examples, thoughtful reflection and appropriate teacher feedback.
Record what the student did, which help they received and what improved, without inventing assessment marks or altering evidence.
Such portfolios may be useful where a future destination accepts them, even though they cannot be presented as SEAB-moderated coursework.
43. A four-week decision process can reduce anxiety
Week one compares the two official G3 rosters and identifies which desired subject is genuinely privately available. Week two checks personal eligibility and any special paper rules.
Week three reviews an intended destination’s actual admission prerequisites and uses suitable diagnostics for the available subjects.
Week four creates a sustainable preparation plan while allowing the child’s artistic or sporting interests to continue honestly and safely.
44. Five concrete questions for an adviser
Which exact 2027 K-code and candidate type can this person register for, based on current SEAB rules?
What practical paper, location or eligibility requirement still needs formal confirmation?
Does the intended course require a named SEC subject or accept a separately reviewed portfolio or audition?
How can the student develop genuine skills without falsely describing a private project as national examination evidence?
45. Frequently asked questions: 2027 G3 private access
Art, Higher Art, Music, Higher Music, Drama, Electronics, ESS, D&T and NFS appear in the school G3 roster but not the 2027 private one.
G3 Computing, Physics, Chemistry and Biology are among the subjects listed privately, though their exam arrangements must be followed.
A hobby course, club achievement or portfolio does not create a missing SEC registration automatically.
The absence of a private subject is not evidence of a child’s low ability or weak creativity.
Properly taught kids shine a bright light into the future. Good qualification decisions and authentic learning are compatible.
46. Why the 2027 private list is not just the school list minus coursework
The actual two rosters differ in more than portfolio access. SEAB’s school list includes some special programmes and third-language offerings that are absent privately, while the private roster includes Arabic K386 and Islamic Religious Knowledge K363 that require their own interpretation.
This means parents should avoid using a single school-subject table with the coursework rows crossed out. Every private K-code should be verified directly with the 2027 private-candidate authority.
For a chosen subject, write its complete title, exact code and candidate category before purchasing material. Those three details can determine whether a seemingly familiar paper is genuinely relevant.
A correct official registration is more valuable than memorising a misleading list of supposedly equivalent subject names.
47. A teenager’s interest can survive a changed examination plan
A learner may feel disappointed when the desired national Art or Drama code is unavailable through a proposed private route. The family’s response should separate that administrative fact from the student’s creative identity.
Ask what aspect of the subject most excites them: sketching, interpreting stories, building devices, teamwork or understanding human movement. Those capabilities can still develop in safe, appropriate ways.
At the same time, discuss which formally available SEC subjects genuinely serve any later qualification goal. These are connected decisions, but one does not replace the other.
A realistic plan preserves motivation without inventing the right to sit an unlisted examination.
48. How to check private eligibility before deciding to retake
A candidate considering the first SEC examination should consult SEAB’s current private-registration rules and Candidates Portal rather than rely solely on the syllabus directory.
Individual eligibility can depend on age, schooling status and other conditions; an exam paper may be listed without every individual automatically qualifying to register.
Ask the authority which examination year and subject code applies, and record the answer alongside any confirmed fees or deadlines. Avoid guessed arrangements borrowed from an older GCE year.
Careful early checks prevent avoidable disruption and let the learner prepare for an examination route that genuinely exists.

The article describes the 2027 published rosters, not permanent rules for every later year. Candidate eligibility and any unusual permission must be confirmed by SEAB; independent portfolio work is not automatically a nationally assessed qualification.
