A completed drill does not prove a ready team
A hospital reports that every staff member attended a device safety drill. Yet participants miss the escalation step in an unexpected scenario. Readiness metrics should reflect demonstrated capability rather than attendance alone.
Define the safety-critical outcomes
Identify recognition, device operation, clinical assessment and communication tasks appropriate to each role.
Measure observable performance
Use structured simulation evidence rather than relying solely on confidence surveys.
Consider scenario difficulty
A simple rehearsed exercise and an unfamiliar complex scenario do not provide equivalent evidence.
Review team coordination
Backup response, handoffs and escalation may matter as much as individual operation.
Track improvement after remediation
Reassessment should show whether identified gaps were repaired.
Interpret results responsibly
Small samples and differences in scenarios may limit comparisons across teams.
Break-test: everyone passes the familiar drill but fails a varied scenario
Can the programme recognise false confidence and adjust training?
