Repeating the same drill can create false confidence
A team knows exactly when a simulated alarm will occur because the scenario never changes. Scenario rotation tests whether staff recognise and respond to important events under different realistic conditions.
Define the core competence
Identify the device response, clinical assessment and communication tasks that must remain consistent.
Vary the surface conditions
Change timing, workload, available staff or equipment context without distorting the underlying safety objective.
Preserve clinical realism
Scenarios should reflect approved procedures and plausible device behaviour.
Avoid unnecessary surprises
Variation should assess readiness, not trick participants with irrelevant details.
Observe independent performance
Look for recognition, appropriate escalation and follow-up rather than memorised choreography.
Debrief and improve
Use results to refine training, procedures and future scenarios.
Break-test: the team succeeds only when the alarm is expected
Can a varied scenario reveal and repair the recognition gap?
