How a Granular Level Secondary 2 Math Tutor Diagnoses Algebra Breakdown Step by Step | Expressions, Signs and Equality Checks

Find the first algebra step that needs repair

When a student is described as weak in algebra, inspect the working before choosing more practice. This supporting guide shows how to distinguish expression, sign and equality errors. For the main programme account, read the Bukit Timah Secondary 2 Mathematics tuition programme guide. The aim here is to identify a teachable step, not to assign a broad label to the student.

Ask for a fresh attempt on a question already within the student’s taught work. Let the student finish a reasonable attempt before correcting it. The first incorrect line often tells more than the final answer, but confirm the pattern with another question before treating it as a recurring gap.

Separate expression meaning from operations

Compare 3x + 2x with 3x + 2. The first is 5x; the second contains unlike terms and cannot be collected into one x-term. Ask what each term represents. A student who writes 5x for both expressions may be treating letters as decoration rather than quantities.

Then compare 3x × 2 with 3x + 2x. Multiplication gives 6x; addition gives 5x. Before teaching a shortcut, establish which operation the student is performing and why.

Isolate brackets and negative signs

For −2(x − 4), the products are −2x and +8. If the student writes −2x − 8, ask them to calculate (−2) × (−4) separately. This distinguishes uncertain signed-number multiplication from failing to multiply every term in a bracket.

Next try 5 − 2(x − 4). Correct expansion gives 5 − 2x + 8 = 13 − 2x. Keep the subtraction attached to the multiplier. A fresh example with changed numbers tests the repaired step without simply inviting the student to remember the previous answer.

Check equality separately

In 3x + 5 = 17, subtracting 5 from both sides gives 3x = 12 and x = 4. Ask why the same operation is applied to both sides. Substitution into the original equation gives 12 + 5 = 17.

If expression simplification is accurate but equation solving fails, focus on equality and inverse operations. Do not assume another expansion worksheet will address the difficulty.

Verify the repair independently

After an explanation, cover the worked solution and ask for a similar question. Later, place the idea among other tasks so that the topic heading does not select the method. Note whether help supplied the operation, the first line or only an arithmetic reminder.

Use the first-wrong-step diagnosis pillar for broader patterns and the Number and Algebra pillar for connected teaching routes. For a follow-up routine, read the practice and error-review pillar. The Secondary 2 Mathematics master index collects the wider support hierarchy.
