Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

eduKateSG · SEC G3 CHEMISTRY · 2027 K324 / K326 / K328 · PHASE 4

Before You Study G3 Chemistry, Know Which G3 Chemistry You Are Actually Taking.

The 2027 Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate contains three Chemistry-bearing G3 routes that matter here: K324 pure Chemistry, K326 Science (Physics, Chemistry) and K328 Science (Chemistry, Biology). They share chemical ideas, but they are not the same course and they are not assessed in the same way.

This distinction matters from the first tutorial. A student preparing for K324 needs the depth and practical architecture of a full Chemistry subject. A student preparing for K326 or K328 needs Chemistry integrated into a combined-Science assessment in which time, partner-subject load and shared practical work change the operating problem.

This eduKateSG page distinguishes the three Chemistry-bearing G3 routes and explains how depth, pacing, practice mix and examination preparation should match the student’s actual syllabus. It is a national learning and route map, not a permanent local class-size promise.

What This Page Owns

This page is the canonical eduKateSG route map for 2027 SEC G3 Chemistry. It owns the distinction between pure Chemistry K324 and the two Chemistry-bearing combined-Science routes K326 and K328, and explains how teaching changes across those routes.

The year-specific teaching jobs remain separate: Secondary 3 Chemistry owns the transition into upper-secondary Chemistry, while Secondary 4 Chemistry owns final-year integration and examination stability. Students taking G2 should use the SEC G2 Chemistry route.

K324 Pure Chemistry: A Full Chemistry Examination System

For K324, candidates enter for three papers. The 2027 scheme gives the subject a distinct balance between recognition, generated written reasoning and formal practical competence.

PaperFormatDurationMarksWeighting
Paper 1Multiple Choice1 hour4030%
Paper 2Structured and Free Response1 hour 45 minutes8050%
Paper 3Practical1 hour 50 minutes4020%

Paper 1 contains 40 compulsory MCQs. Paper 2 contains compulsory structured work in Section A and a choice in Section B; it also includes a data-based question requiring interpretation, evaluation or problem solving. Paper 3 is a formal practical assessment rather than a written simulation of laboratory work.

Official syllabus: 2027 K324 G3 Chemistry.

This architecture explains why pure Chemistry cannot be prepared by theory revision alone. Twenty per cent of the subject is practical assessment, and the theory papers themselves also reward handling information, data and unfamiliar situations.

K326 and K328: G3 Combined Science Has Its Own Architecture

For G3 combined Science, candidates enter for Paper 1, Paper 5 and the two structured papers corresponding to their Science combination. The Chemistry-bearing routes therefore use Chemistry in three different modes: shared multiple choice, a dedicated structured Chemistry paper and practical work paired with the second Science.

PaperRoleDurationMarksWeighting
Paper 1MCQ across the two Sciences1 hour4020%
Paper 3Structured and free response — Chemistry1 hour 15 minutes6532.5%
Other structured paperPhysics for K326 or Biology for K3281 hour 15 minutes6532.5%
Paper 5Practical across the two Sciences1 hour 30 minutes3015%

K326 uses Physics and Chemistry; K328 uses Chemistry and Biology. Paper 3 is the Chemistry structured paper for both routes. Paper 5 contains practical work from the relevant two Sciences.

Official combined-Science syllabus: 2027 K326/K327/K328 G3 Science syllabus.

This is why a combined-Science student should not simply use a pure-Chemistry revision schedule cut in half. The assessment is organised differently and must coexist with another Science.

Pure Chemistry Is Not Just Combined Chemistry Plus More Chapters

The difference is better understood as a change in resolution. At higher resolution, more distinctions matter, relationships are followed further, data can be more demanding and practical competence becomes a larger independent object of assessment.

A pure-Chemistry learner needs a dense network connecting atomic structure, bonding, properties, quantitative relationships, reaction families, energy, rates, redox, periodic behaviour, organic chemistry and experimental evidence according to the syllabus. The important feature is not simply the number of topics. It is the number of ways one topic constrains another.

For example, an unfamiliar question may ask the student to use structural information to infer physical properties, interpret experimental data, write equations and then make a quantitative deduction. The chapters have disappeared into one problem.

G3 Chemistry rewards a model that remains coherent when the representation changes.

The Six G3 Chemistry Backbeats

1. Conservation

Atoms, charge and reacting relationships do not disappear because a question is unfamiliar. Formulae and equations become more reliable when students treat them as representations of conservation rather than decorative notation.

2. Structure → interaction → property

Many explanations can be stabilised by identifying the structure, the relevant particles or charge carriers, the interaction between them and the property being explained. This prevents generic phrases such as “strong bonds” from being used in the wrong context.

3. Amount → ratio → required quantity

Quantitative Chemistry becomes manageable when the student can move deliberately between measurable quantities, amount of substance and the stoichiometric relationship encoded by an equation.

4. Electron bookkeeping

Redox and related processes become less mysterious when students can track oxidation, reduction and electron transfer consistently rather than memorising unrelated reaction statements.

5. Evidence → inference

Observations, measurements and data constrain the conclusion. Students learn to separate what the experiment directly shows from what a chemical model allows them to infer.

6. Transfer under novelty

A model is useful only if the student can recognise it inside an unfamiliar industrial, environmental or experimental context. We vary the wrapper while keeping the underlying chemical relationship stable.

The G3 Practical Difference

At G3, experimental work is not merely a classroom demonstration. Both the pure K324 route and the G3 combined-Science routes include formal practical assessment, though the architecture differs.

K324 pure Chemistry practical

The formal Paper 3 assesses four skill areas: Planning; Manipulation, Measurement and Observation; Presentation of Data and Observations; and Analysis, Conclusions and Evaluation. The practical paper contributes 20% of K324.

The syllabus expects familiarity with a range of techniques including titration, rate experiments, separation techniques, salt preparation, gas collection, qualitative inorganic analysis and appropriate organic observations. This does not mean students should memorise a laboratory recipe for every possible experiment. They need enough practical experience to understand why the procedure works and how evidence is generated.

K326/K328 combined practical

Paper 5 is a 1 hour 30 minute combined practical worth 15% of the G3 combined-Science subject. It contains practical work from the two relevant Sciences. A K326 learner must therefore switch between Physics and Chemistry practical thinking; a K328 learner between Chemistry and Biology.

That switch is itself trainable. Apparatus, measurement and data presentation have shared scientific habits, while the domain-specific inference must remain correct.

Why 3-Pax Matters at G3

G3 Chemistry produces errors that can look identical on the page but come from different internal causes. Two students may both miss a stoichiometry question. One misunderstood the chemical equation; the other made an arithmetic conversion error. Two students may both lose an explanation mark. One has the wrong particle model; the other has the correct model but weak command-word execution.

In a three-student lesson, we can ask for the reasoning before the final answer, inspect written working, change the representation and test whether the repair transfers. The shared lesson still creates peer comparison, but the tutor has enough attention to distinguish cause from symptom.

This becomes especially valuable when pure and combined students are following different school sequences. We maintain the common chemical backbeat while aligning exact depth and assessment practice to the learner’s route.

A Typical 90-Minute G3 Chemistry Tutorial

Retrieval across old topics

Short mixed questions prevent earlier Chemistry from becoming inaccessible. The student practises recognising relationships without a chapter label.

Current concept or repair

The school’s present topic is taught at the correct G3 route depth. If a prerequisite is broken, we repair that node rather than piling the new topic on top of it.

Representation switching

The same chemistry is moved through particle descriptions, equations, calculations, data and experimental contexts. The tutor watches for information loss between representations.

Generated response

Students explain, calculate, deduce or evaluate without answer options. This exposes whether recognition has been mistaken for mastery.

Practical reasoning

Where relevant, apparatus, observations, planning, data and evaluation are integrated with theory so practical competence grows throughout the course.

Transfer and error closure

A new wrapper tests the model. Errors are classified by cause and scheduled for retrieval again rather than merely corrected once.

MCQ, Structured and Practical Are Three Different Proofs

A strong Chemistry programme should not assume that success in one mode guarantees success in the others.

MCQ proves discrimination

The learner must distinguish the correct chemical claim from plausible alternatives efficiently. Good review explains why the distractors fail.

Structured work proves generation

The learner must construct the equation, calculation, explanation, deduction or evaluation without being shown the answer. Command-word discipline becomes visible.

Practical proves interaction with evidence

The learner must operate in a real or formally assessed experimental setting: manipulate equipment, measure, observe, present, analyse and evaluate. Practical work returns Chemistry from the page to the world.

We train each proof mode deliberately, then reconnect them. A practical observation should inform a theoretical model; a theoretical model should help predict an observation; a quantitative relationship should remain chemically plausible.

Quantitative Chemistry: Make the Chain Visible Before Compressing It

At G3, quantitative Chemistry becomes a major source of avoidable volatility. Students often know the individual formulas yet become uncertain when several quantities are linked.

We use a stable question:

What quantity do I have → how does it connect to amount of substance → what ratio does the chemistry impose → what quantity do I need?

This reduces the temptation to hunt for a memorised template. It also provides checkpoints. If the equation is wrong, stop. If the unit is wrong, stop. If the final magnitude is chemically absurd, inspect the chain before accepting the calculator display.

Students who carry unnecessary mathematical friction can also use Why Additional Mathematics Matters for Chemistry to understand how algebraic and proportional fluency support the subject.

G3 Chemistry Is Also a Language Subject

Scientific precision depends on language. The difference between observation and inference, intermolecular force and covalent bond, oxidised and oxidising agent, or rate increases and yield increases is not cosmetic. These distinctions protect the model.

We teach command words and chemical vocabulary inside real questions so the language remains attached to the reasoning it serves. When the bottleneck is broader English expression or vocabulary control, the learner can connect to the English Learning Hub and Vocabulary Master.

Three G3 Chemistry Student Pathways

Rebuild

For a student already failing, we identify the earliest high-leverage weakness. Formulae, bonding, equations and mole relationships frequently sit underneath later failures. We rebuild those before attempting full-paper volume.

Stabilise

For a student who understands most topics but fluctuates, the work shifts toward delayed retrieval, mixed representation, error closure, practical competence and timed execution. The objective is lower variance.

Extend

For a stronger student, we increase novelty, integration and depth. Harder questions should force the model to work across multiple sections rather than reward early exposure to content that has not yet been consolidated.

What Progress Looks Like in G3 Chemistry

  • The student knows whether the route is K324, K326 or K328.
  • Formulae and equations are generated from relationships rather than visual memory.
  • Particle and structure explanations identify the correct entities.
  • Quantitative steps survive unfamiliar contexts.
  • Data can be translated into a defensible chemical claim.
  • MCQ distractors can be rejected with reasons.
  • Structured responses answer the actual command word.
  • Practical observations are separated from inference.
  • Experimental improvements target specific limitations rather than generic “repeat the experiment” answers.
  • Older topics remain retrievable during mixed work.
  • The timed–untimed gap becomes smaller.
  • The student increasingly detects chemically impossible answers independently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is K324 the same as “pure Chemistry”?

Yes. In the 2027 G3 SEC syllabus list, Chemistry K324 is the standalone Chemistry subject. K326 and K328 are combined-Science subjects that include Chemistry.

Does G3 combined Science have practical assessment?

Yes. K326 and K328 candidates take Paper 5, a 1 hour 30 minute practical test across the two Sciences in their combination. It contributes 15% of the combined-Science result.

How is K324 practical different?

K324 has a dedicated 1 hour 50 minute Chemistry practical paper worth 20%. The syllabus explicitly assesses planning, manipulation/measurement/observation, presentation of data and observations, and analysis/conclusions/evaluation.

Is pure Chemistry simply harder combined Science?

It is better described as Chemistry at greater disciplinary resolution with its own full assessment architecture. The difference is not usefully captured by “same subject but harder”.

Can a K326 or K328 student use pure-Chemistry questions for practice?

Selected questions can be useful when they test shared chemistry at an appropriate level, but whole-paper practice should match the actual syllabus. Extra difficulty is beneficial only when it sharpens the target skill instead of introducing irrelevant load.

What if my child is strong in Chemistry but weak in the partner Science?

For K326/K328, the full combined result still depends on the second Science and the shared assessment architecture. Chemistry tuition can target the Chemistry component, while planning should remain aware of the partner Science and practical workload.

How should class format be judged?

Judge a class by whether the tutor can see the learner’s calculations, explanations and practical reasoning closely enough to diagnose and correct them. Current class size, lesson duration and availability should be confirmed with the relevant implementation owner rather than treated as permanent information on this guide.

Continue Through the Chemistry Route

Continue Through the SEC G3 Chemistry Route

The first job is to identify the right route. The second is to protect the Chemistry that survives all three: particles, structure, conservation, quantities, mechanisms, evidence and transfer. The third is to train the exact assessment environment in which that Chemistry must perform.

Pure and combined students do not need identical programmes. They do need the same intellectual discipline: a chemical claim should follow from a model, a calculation should follow from a relationship, and an experimental conclusion should follow from evidence.

Know the route. Build the model. Test it against the world. Then make it survive the examination.
