Find city photography ideas in the Top 10 Photos and Selfies to Take When Visiting and Touring series: architectural portraits, small details, food still lifes and personal pictures, with practical guidance on framing, light and permission. Each city guide helps you build an album with a story instead of returning with the same photograph ten times.
Choose a country, then a city. The directory follows countries alphabetically and lists published cities alphabetically within each country. Each guide has ten distinct picture ideas; several may study the same place at different scales. This is a growing collection of selected major cities, not a claim that every city is already covered.

Afghanistan
Read before using these guides: Afghanistan remains under an official against-all-travel advisory. These articles are cultural studies and conditional photography guides; their presence here does not recommend a visit or confirm camera permission. Read the dated access note in each article before considering any real-world application.

Choose a type of photograph
| Your aim | Start with | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Show where you are | A complete architectural or landscape view | Does the frame identify the subject without an exaggerated caption? |
| Notice what others overlook | A surface, pattern, material or small object | Can you explain where the detail belongs? |
| Record something personal | Your own permitted meal, notebook or portrait | Does the picture reveal anything private about you or someone else? |
| Practise composition at home | An ordinary lawful subject with lines, layers or repetition | Can the same visual principle work without a famous landmark? |
Build a small, thoughtful album
Start with an establishing view, move to a medium composition, then choose one detail. Add an object or meal if it contributes a different memory. Finish with a personal note or a portrait only where it is appropriate and permitted. Five distinct pictures can say more than fifty nearly identical ones.
Before pressing the shutter, choose what the picture is about. Before sharing it, check what the caption claims. Observation, historical fact and personal interpretation should remain distinguishable. A picture may show a blue tile; it cannot establish the tile’s age or maker without evidence.
Selfies are an optional part of the series. Entry permission does not automatically establish photography permission, and an attractive setting does not make every pose appropriate. Where a portrait is unsuitable, a lawful architectural frame or written observation can still preserve the memory.
Connect pictures with words
- World City Vocabulary Directory — find destination language and cultural reading.
- Afghanistan Travel Vocabulary Hub — compare the existing Herat, Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif vocabulary companions.
- How to Learn Photography Quickly — continue with the existing camera, light and composition guide.
Use the bilingual vocabulary tables inside each city article to move from “beautiful building” to a precise description: axis, texture, threshold, repetition or conservation. The Chinese glosses are for understanding the photographic idea; they are not local permission phrases.
How this directory grows
Countries form the alphabetical spine; cities sit beneath their country. Only completed guides receive links. New entries will join the same directory so readers can return here, compare nearby topics and continue without hunting through unrelated articles.
Collection established 8 October 2026. The first published selection covers Herat, Kabul, Kandahar and Mazar-i-Sharif. For current advice relevant to these guides, consult FCDO’s Afghanistan travel advice.
