Vocabulary OS Sensors Directory is the instrument panel that makes Vocabulary OS executable.
Vocabulary OS is a closed loop:
exposure → connection → retrieval → sentence use → repair → repeat
Sensors are how we know the loop is running cleanly, not just “doing vocabulary”.
Without sensors:
- students memorise and forget
- errors repeat
- vocabulary becomes decorative, not usable
- growth becomes unstable (spike → collapse)
With sensors:
- vocabulary becomes measurable
- repair becomes permanent
- growth compounds
What a Vocabulary OS Sensor Must Do
Every sensor must have:
- One variable only (one job)
- How to read it (signal vs illusion)
- Thresholds (low / stable / strong / danger)
- Repair actions (what to do next)
If it doesn’t do all four, it’s not a sensor.
The Five Core Vocabulary OS Sensors (Canonical Set)
1) Exposure Sensor
Measures whether the learner is getting enough correct contact with words.
2) Connection Sensor
Measures whether words are being linked into a network (not stored as isolated items).
3) Retrieval Sensor
Measures whether the learner can pull words out after delay, under light pressure.
4) Sentence Use Sensor
Measures whether the learner can use words correctly in real sentences (meaning + grammar + tone).
5) Repair Sensor
Measures whether wrong usage is being fixed permanently (recurrence drops).
How to Read the Whole Panel (Fast)
Vocabulary OS is healthy when these move together:
- Exposure rises (input)
- Connection rises (network)
- Retrieval rises (ownership)
- Sentence use rises (output)
- Repair keeps recurrence low (stability)
If exposure is high but retrieval is low, the student is “seeing words” but not owning them.
If retrieval is high but sentence use is low, the student “knows meanings” but cannot apply.
If sentence use is high but repair is low, the student is building bad habits.
The Master Truth Test: Recurrence
Vocabulary OS has one brutal truth test:
If the same mistake repeats, repair did not happen.
This prevents fake progress.
Interpretation Pages (Gauge Layer)
Sensors produce readings.
