Vocabulary OS Sensor: Exposure (Canonical)

Exposure Sensor measures whether a learner is receiving enough correct contact with vocabulary.

Vocabulary cannot grow without input.

But exposure is not just “seeing many words”.

Exposure must be:

  • frequent
  • meaningful
  • level-appropriate
  • repeated over time

This sensor detects whether the input stream is strong enough to feed the loop.

What This Sensor Measures

Exposure Sensor measures:

  1. volume
  • how many words the learner encounters per week
  1. frequency
  • how often the learner encounters them (repeat exposure)
  1. quality
  • whether exposure is in meaningful context (not random lists)
  1. level match
  • whether words are slightly above current comfort level (S-curve zone)

Exposure is the fuel of Vocabulary OS.

How to Read This Sensor

Exposure is healthy when:

  • words appear repeatedly across days and weeks
  • exposure happens in context (reading, listening, discussion)
  • the learner can roughly understand the text (not drowning)
  • there is consistent weekly rhythm
  • the learner meets the same words again naturally

Exposure is weak when:

  • contact is rare and irregular
  • words appear once and disappear
  • exposure is only “word list dumping”
  • texts are too hard (student shuts down)
  • exposure happens without meaning, so nothing sticks

Minimum Viable Test (So the Loop Can Run)

A learner passes the minimum exposure test when:

  • they meet vocabulary daily (even small)
  • and they meet the same words again within 7 days

If words are not re-seen, the loop starves.

Exposure Levels (Gauge Alignment)

Level 1 — Starved

  • rare exposure
  • no repeat contact
  • vocabulary network cannot grow

Level 2 — Sporadic

  • exposure happens but irregular
  • words are seen once
  • decay is high

Level 3 — Stable Input

  • consistent exposure rhythm
  • words repeat naturally
  • comprehension remains manageable

Level 4 — Rich Input

  • high-quality exposure across multiple sources
  • repeated contacts are frequent
  • learner stays in the S-curve growth zone

Level 5 — Compounding

  • exposure is consistent, rich, and varied
  • learner meets words across contexts
  • vocabulary growth accelerates

The One Mistake This Sensor Prevents

Many students try to “learn vocabulary” without exposure.

They:

  • memorise lists
  • do worksheets
  • cram definitions

But without living exposure:

  • words never become natural
  • meanings stay brittle
  • usage stays wrong
  • decay is high

Exposure prevents artificial vocabulary.

Repair Actions (If Exposure Is Weak)

  1. Create daily input
  • 10–15 minutes reading or listening daily beats weekly cramming
  1. Repeat within 7 days
  • re-seeing words inside a week prevents decay
  1. Use level-appropriate texts
  • too hard = shutdown
  • too easy = no growth
  1. Tie exposure to a theme
  • themes create connection scaffolds (feeds Connection Sensor)
  1. Keep it stable
  • consistency matters more than intensity
