Examination Craft | Make Your Thinking Visible

There is a strange examination problem that happens to capable students.

They know more than the paper can see.

The reasoning happens in the head. Connections are made quickly. Steps are skipped because they feel obvious. A conclusion appears, and the student writes only the end of the journey.

Sometimes that is enough.

Sometimes it is not.

Examination Craft therefore asks a practical question:

What part of my reasoning needs to become visible for this answer to be understood, checked and assessed?

Quick Read

Making thinking visible means externalising the parts of a solution that matter: the relationship being used, the evidence selected, the causal link, the comparison, the method, the justification or the structure of an argument. It is not an instruction to write every thought. It is the craft of deciding which reasoning must leave the head and become readable on the page.

The Examination Can Only Read the Response

A student may look at a Mathematics question and immediately see why two quantities are related.

A Science student may understand the mechanism behind an observation.

An English student may feel exactly why a line sounds threatening, hopeful or ironic.

That private understanding is valuable.

But assessment works with evidence.

The examination cannot award a thought simply because the student had it.

This does not mean every answer requires a long explanation. Different papers, subjects and question types have different marking requirements. Students must follow the conventions of their own syllabus and examination.

The general rule is narrower:

If a piece of reasoning is necessary for the answer to count, do not leave it entirely invisible.

Visible Does Not Mean Verbose

Students sometimes hear “show your thinking” and translate it into “write more”.

That is not the goal.

More words can conceal thinking just as easily as too few words can conceal it.

The better question is:

What is the smallest clear trace of reasoning that makes this answer intelligible?

Sometimes that trace is one equation.

Sometimes it is a phrase connecting cause to effect.

Sometimes it is a quotation followed by an explanation.

Sometimes it is a comparative sentence that makes the relationship explicit.

Sometimes it is a labelled diagram.

The form changes.

The principle does not.

Three Reasons to Externalise Reasoning

1. The assessor can follow it

Where the assessment expects reasoning, a readable chain helps the response demonstrate what the student actually did.

2. The student can inspect it

Reasoning on the page becomes an object the student can check.

An omitted negative sign can be seen.

A Science explanation can reveal that the cause has not actually been connected to the outcome.

An English paragraph can reveal that the evidence and claim are sitting beside each other rather than being linked.

3. The student can recover if the route breaks

Visible state makes it easier to return to a question after interruption or uncertainty.

Mathematics: Do Not Make the Page Guess the Route

Mathematics gives the clearest example because the route itself is often part of the examinable performance.

A chain such as:

known relationship → substitution → transformation → result

is not merely decoration around an answer.

It can also function as an error-control surface for the student.

Science: Make the Causal Bridge Explicit

A common Science weakness is not a missing fact.

It is a missing bridge.

The student writes the condition.

Then writes the result.

But the mechanism that connects them is left inside the student’s head.

A useful execution pattern is:

condition → relevant mechanism → consequence

This is not a universal marking formula. It is a thinking check: have I exposed the causal relationship the explanation depends on?

English and Humanities: Make the Relationship Visible

Evidence does not explain itself.

A quotation may be relevant.

A historical fact may be accurate.

A source may be correctly identified.

But the assessment may require the student to do something with that evidence.

Compare it.

Interpret it.

Use it to support a judgement.

Explain an effect.

The relationship between evidence and claim needs to become visible enough for the answer to do its job.

The Compression Test

Strong examination writing is often compressed.

But compression should remove redundancy, not remove logic.

Ask:

  • If I delete this line, does the reasoning still remain clear?
  • If I keep only the final answer, does an important step disappear?
  • Have I made the decisive relationship explicit?
  • Am I repeating evidence after the job is already complete?

The aim is not maximum visibility.

It is sufficient visibility.

Visible Thinking Is Also a Checking Tool

One reason this matters under examination conditions is that internal reasoning can feel smoother than it really is.

When reasoning is externalised, contradictions become easier to notice.

The units do not match.

The conclusion does not follow from the evidence.

The comparison mentions only one side.

The explanation jumps from condition to outcome without mechanism.

The student can now inspect the work rather than relying on a feeling that it was correct.

Do Not Turn Every Answer into a Performance of Metacognition

There is an important limit here.

Students do not need to narrate their mental process to the marker.

They do not need to write:

“First I thought this, then I considered that…”

unless the assessment genuinely asks for reflection.

The metacognition happens in the student.

The answer should contain only what the task needs.

This distinction protects speed and clarity.

A Practice Routine

Take a marked paper and choose five questions where the student says:

“But I knew that.”

For each one, compare three layers:

  1. What the student says they understood.
  2. What actually appeared on the page.
  3. What the question required the response to demonstrate.

Then identify the missing bridge.

Was it a method?

A justification?

A causal link?

A comparison?

An interpretation?

This gives the student a repair target much more precise than “write more detail”.

What Parents and Tutors Should Look For

When reviewing an answer, ask whether the student’s reasoning is:

  • relevant — it belongs to the task;
  • visible — the crucial part is actually present;
  • connected — the steps or evidence form a readable relationship;
  • economical — the answer is not carrying unnecessary material;
  • checkable — the student can inspect what they have done.

Then fade the support.

The student must eventually perform this judgement alone.

The next question is not what the marker sees.

It is what you need to leave behind so that a difficult question remains recoverable if you have to stop and return.
