One reason collocations matter is that grammar can be correct while wording still feels unnatural. A phrase such as “do a claim” is understandable, but fluent academic English normally says make a claim. The repairs below train that difference. Read the less natural version first, predict the repair, then explain why the corrected combination is better.
- Less natural: do a claim. Better: make a claim. English convention pairs make with acts of formulation such as a claim, decision or recommendation.
- Less natural: give support to a claim. Better: support a claim. The direct verb is cleaner and more idiomatic unless the noun support itself is the focus.
- Less natural: show an evidence. Better: present evidence / provide evidence. Evidence is normally uncountable in this academic use.

Collocations become easier to retrieve when students see the grammar pattern underneath them. The same word can participate in several patterns, but each pattern creates a different sentence frame. Instead of memorising 100 isolated strings, learn families.
Pattern 1: verb + noun
This is the largest group in the list: support a claim, present evidence, draw a conclusion, challenge an assumption, conduct an analysis, identify a pattern, test a hypothesis, address a counterargument, implement a policy, improve access, reduce uncertainty, shape perception. The verb tells the reader what operation is being performed on the noun.
Useful frame: Subject + academic verb + object. “The data support the claim.” “The writer challenges the assumption.” “The experiment tests the hypothesis.” “The policy improves access.” This simple grammatical skeleton carries a large amount of academic meaning.
Pattern 2: adjective + noun
Examples include compelling evidence, credible source, reliable measure, tentative conclusion, major limitation, reasonable inference, causal relationship, contributing factor, underlying assumption, practical implication, significant difference, plausible explanation, coherent argument and nuanced interpretation.
The adjective selects a dimension of the noun. Evidence can be relevant, sufficient, compelling or substantial. Those adjectives are not decorative. Relevant asks whether the evidence connects; sufficient asks whether there is enough; compelling asks how persuasive it is; substantial describes considerable amount or strength.
Pattern 3: verb + noun + preposition
Many collocations extend into a prepositional frame: provide evidence for a claim, draw a conclusion from data, make a comparison between options, assess the significance of a finding, reflect on experience, transfer knowledge to a new context.
Students should store the preposition when it is predictable. Evidence for a claim. Relationship between variables. Implication for policy. Access to services. Responsibility for an outcome. Perspective on an issue. Knowing the head words without the frame often causes hesitation.
Pattern 4: noun + noun combinations
Academic English often compresses ideas into noun+noun phrases such as source credibility, policy implementation, error rate, research method, system resilience, word frequency. This compression is useful, but students should avoid uncontrolled noun stacks. If a phrase becomes difficult to parse, unpack it with of, for or a relative clause.
Pattern 5: linking verb + adjective + noun frame
Collocations also appear inside evaluation frames: “The evidence is relevant to the claim.” “The conclusion is consistent with the data.” “The strategy is effective in improving recall.” “The measure is reliable across repeated trials.” Learning the collocation includes learning how it behaves in a full sentence.
One noun, several collocations: build lexical networks
A powerful way to organise collocations is to start from a high-value noun and learn several natural partners. This creates a network instead of a list. When the noun appears in reading, multiple possible operations become available.
- Claim: make a claim, support a claim, challenge a claim, qualify a claim, weaken a claim, strengthen a claim.
- Evidence: present evidence, provide evidence, cite evidence, relevant evidence, sufficient evidence, compelling evidence, substantial evidence.
- Conclusion: draw a conclusion, reach a conclusion, support a conclusion, tentative conclusion, valid conclusion.
- Argument: develop an argument, organise an argument, strengthen an argument, coherent argument, address an argument, summarise an argument.
- Analysis: conduct an analysis, perform an analysis, critical analysis, data analysis, textual analysis.
- Pattern: identify a pattern, observe a pattern, recurring pattern, consistent pattern, emerging pattern.

Maren uses these networks during revision. If claim appears five times with the same verb, she asks whether the reasoning job actually changes. Perhaps one sentence makes the claim, another supports it, another qualifies it, and a later paragraph challenges it. Collocational variety should follow conceptual variety rather than being added for decoration.
Why synonyms do not always share collocations
Two words can be close in meaning yet prefer different partners. This is why thesaurus substitution can damage otherwise strong writing. Strong evidence is natural; powerful evidence can occur but often sounds less standard in formal prose. Heavy rain is natural while strong rain is not the usual English choice, even though heavy and strong can both express intensity elsewhere.
Academic vocabulary behaves the same way. We commonly draw a distinction, not usually pull a distinction. We conduct research or carry out research, not normally execute research in ordinary educational prose. We raise a concern, address a concern and express concern; different verbs create different functions.
Iona’s rule is to treat repeated real usage as evidence. If a combination appears frequently across serious texts, store the chunk. If a thesaurus replacement is grammatically possible but unfamiliar, check whether the surrounding words also need to change.
Cross-curricular transfer lab: the same collocation in different subjects
A collocation becomes durable when it survives a change of topic. If support a claim belongs only to English, the chunk is narrow. If the student can use it in Science, History, Geography and everyday reasoning, it has become part of a general academic language system. The laboratories below deliberately reuse the same phrases across subjects.
Transfer Lab 1: English comprehension
Iona reads a passage in which a character repeatedly checks the door and avoids eye contact. She first identifies a pattern in the behaviour. She then offers an interpretation: the character may be apprehensive. To support the claim, she presents evidence from the repeated actions. Because the text never states the emotion directly, she calls the result a reasonable inference rather than a fact.
The sequence can be stored as a comprehension routine: identify a pattern → offer an interpretation → present evidence → support a claim → draw a conclusion. The phrases are not decorative. Each one labels the next reasoning move.
Transfer Lab 2: Literature analysis
Maren compares two moments in a story. She highlights a contrast between the character’s confident public language and hesitant private actions. She then draws a distinction between confidence and performance of confidence. That distinction supports a nuanced interpretation rather than a one-word description of the character.
A mature literary paragraph may therefore combine collocations from several clusters: broader context, significant difference, underlying assumption, reasonable inference, coherent argument. Students learn that strong vocabulary is often multiword reasoning vocabulary.
Transfer Lab 3: Science investigation
A class tests a hypothesis about light and plant growth. It controls a variable by keeping temperature constant, collects data over four weeks and then analyses data for a pattern. If growth differs between groups, the class asks whether the evidence is sufficient to establish a causal relationship.
The group may only reach a tentative conclusion because the sample is small. That language is scientifically useful: it communicates evidence strength without pretending certainty.
Transfer Lab 4: Mathematics and data interpretation
Leonie examines a graph and identifies a pattern. She then calculates a rate of change rather than describing raw totals. If exact values are unavailable, she estimates probability or magnitude cautiously. When comparing two groups, she asks whether there is a significant difference and what the comparison actually means.
These collocations replace vague numerical language. “It went up a lot” becomes “The rate increased sharply.” “They are different” becomes “There is a significant difference in the measured outcome.” Precision comes from the chunk and the concept together.
Transfer Lab 5: History and source evaluation
Iona cites a source, checks whether it is a credible source, and places it in the broader context of the event. She may consider a perspective shaped by class, role or time period. If the source contains a strong viewpoint, she avoids assuming bias automatically and instead looks for evidence that the perspective systematically distorts what is represented.
The final paragraph might assess significance rather than merely describe the event. The same collocations used in English now help structure historical reasoning.
Transfer Lab 6: Geography and environment
A student identifies a pattern in urban growth, names a contributing factor, and tries to explain the underlying mechanism. When evaluating a transport proposal, the student may assess feasibility, improve access, promote equity and ensure sustainability as separate criteria rather than collapsing them into “good planning”.
Geography particularly rewards collocations that connect systems, people and constraints. Overcome a constraint and support adaptation become useful when discussing climate, infrastructure and changing demand.
Transfer Lab 7: Social studies and public policy
A government may implement a policy, an agency may enforce a regulation, officials may exercise authority, and independent review may ensure accountability. These four collocations describe different institutional functions. Using them correctly prevents vague sentences such as “the government controls everything”.
A policy essay can then address a counterargument, make a concession about cost, offer a rebuttal based on long-term benefit, and qualify the claim where evidence is incomplete.
Transfer Lab 8: Technology
A technology proposal may introduce innovation while also attempting to improve efficiency. Before expansion, a team should assess feasibility. After deployment, it should evaluate effectiveness, increase reliability and build resilience. The phrases create an evaluation pipeline instead of an empty claim that the technology is “advanced”.
Leonie adds a useful distinction: a tool can improve efficiency without achieving the intended outcome. The collocations help students separate those criteria.
Transfer Lab 9: Learning and study habits
A student tries a new revision routine. The goal is to achieve an outcome: delayed recall. The student retrieves from memory, monitors errors, and asks whether the routine improves effectiveness. If performance remains weak, the student may challenge an assumption such as “more time always means more learning” and then support adaptation by changing the method.
When the same student can use the language to analyse Science, essays and revision, the learner begins to transfer knowledge rather than memorise isolated vocabulary.
Transfer Lab 10: Media literacy
A dramatic post makes a claim. Iona asks whether it cites a source, whether the source is credible, and whether the post provides sufficient evidence. She questions the premise if the argument assumes that popularity equals truth. She may also identify a pattern of selective examples and minimise bias in her own response by checking information that could challenge her first impression.
This routine turns collocations into digital reasoning habits. Language becomes part of verification.
Essay reconstruction lab: build paragraphs from collocation functions
Students often try to insert advanced phrases after a paragraph is already written. A better approach is to use collocations as planning labels. The phrases below tell the writer what the next sentence must do.
Paragraph model 1: claim → evidence → reasoning → qualification
Make a claim: “Reliable public transport can improve access to employment.”
Present evidence: “Travel-time data show that residents near the new line reach major employment centres more quickly.”
Support the claim: “This evidence supports the claim because lower travel time expands the practical range of jobs a resident can reach.”
Qualify the claim: “However, the benefit depends on fare affordability and feeder connectivity.”
Draw a conclusion: “The strongest conclusion is therefore that infrastructure can improve access when supporting conditions are present.”
Notice that each collocation creates a function. The paragraph is coherent because the functions form a sequence. The phrases can later be varied, but the reasoning architecture remains.
Paragraph model 2: concession → counterargument → rebuttal
Make a concession: “A legitimate concern is that the programme requires substantial initial spending.”
Address a counterargument: “Critics therefore argue that the programme is financially inefficient.”
Offer a rebuttal: “However, this argument overlooks lower maintenance costs across the following five years.”
Provide justification: “When total cost is calculated across the full operating period, the initial expense is partly offset by later savings.”

Collocation ladders: increase sophistication without forcing rare words
A collocation ladder starts with ordinary wording and increases precision step by step. The purpose is not to replace every simple sentence. The ladder shows how language changes as the reasoning becomes more specific.

Academic writing becomes fluent when one collocation naturally triggers the next. The chains below can be used as planning routes.

- Investigation chain: test a hypothesis → control a variable → collect data → analyse data → identify a pattern → reach a conclusion.

The chains are not templates to copy blindly. Their value is diagnostic. If an essay jumps from present evidence directly to draw a conclusion, perhaps the missing stage is explanation. If a policy recommendation begins with implement a policy before assess feasibility, the reasoning order may be incomplete.
Editing workshop: replace isolated vocabulary with functional chunks
Consider the sentence: “This important evidence is good because it shows the writer is right.” The individual words are understandable, but the reasoning is blurred. A collocation-based repair might be: “This relevant evidence supports the claim because it directly addresses the stated cause.” The revised sentence uses two chunks and identifies the relationship between them.
Another weak sentence says: “There is a big problem with the study because the group is small.” A collocational repair is: “A major limitation is the small sample, which weakens the claim that the result applies to the wider population.” The improvement comes from conceptual precision, not from longer words.
Maren’s editing method is to circle a vague verb-noun combination and ask whether academic English has a standard chunk for that job. “Do analysis” becomes “conduct an analysis”. “Say a claim” becomes “make a claim”. “Show why” may become “provide justification”. “Talk about the other side” may become “address a counterargument”. The replacement should clarify the reasoning function.
Reverse retrieval: can you produce the whole collocation from the idea?
Reading a collocation and understanding it is easier than producing it from meaning. Writing requires the harder direction. Cover the answers below, read the cue, and retrieve the entire phrase. A response counts as fully secure only when the wording is both conceptually correct and natural.

Timed retrieval drills
Leonie trains collocations under progressively tighter conditions. The objective is not speed for its own sake. The objective is to make useful phrases available quickly enough that they do not consume all the attention needed for reasoning.
Drill 1: five-second completion
Read a first word and complete the chunk within five seconds: support…, draw…, credible…, test…, address…, practical…, assess…, shape…. If several answers are possible, give one natural academic completion and then another.
Drill 2: meaning-to-chunk
Use a meaning cue rather than the first word: “question something taken for granted” → challenge an assumption. “Judge whether a plan can realistically be done” → assess feasibility. This direction is closer to real writing because the idea appears before the words.
Drill 3: choose among near-neighbours
Give three options: present evidence, provide evidence, support a claim. Ask which best completes a sentence and why. Another set might be draw a conclusion, reach a conclusion, support a conclusion. All are natural, but they perform different jobs.
Drill 4: repair the unnatural phrase
Display phrases such as do a claim, make a conclusion, give an interpretation, prove a hypothesis, big limitation. Students repair them without looking at the list. Error correction is powerful because the wrong combination makes the boundary memorable.
Drill 5: one-minute paragraph
Provide three required chunks—perhaps make a claim, present evidence, qualify a claim—and ask for a coherent paragraph in one minute. The challenge is not merely to include the phrases, but to make their reasoning functions real.

Production diagnostic: recognition, selection or retrieval?
When a student misuses a collocation, identify the broken stage. A recognition problem means the phrase is not understood when seen. A selection problem means several plausible chunks are available but the wrong one is chosen. A retrieval problem means the student understands the phrase but cannot produce it quickly enough from the idea.
For example, a student may recognise draw a distinction perfectly in reading, yet write “make a distinction” or “show a difference” under pressure. The meaning is present; the exact chunk is weak. That student needs retrieval and collocation practice, not another definition lesson.
Another student may retrieve significant difference quickly but use it for every visible difference. That is a selection problem: the collocation is available, but the semantic conditions are not controlled. The repair is contrast practice—significant versus substantial, relevant, marginal or minimal—not faster recall.
A thirty-day learning plan for the 100 academic collocations
The most effective way to learn collocations is cumulative rather than linear. A student should not study ten phrases on Monday, abandon them on Tuesday and move to ten new phrases. New chunks should enter the system while earlier chunks keep returning through retrieval, contrast, sentence building and transfer. The thirty-day plan below therefore mixes acquisition with recycling.
Day 1: Learn support a claim, make a claim, present evidence and provide evidence. Write one short paragraph in which each phrase performs its real function. Finish by explaining the difference between presenting evidence and supporting a claim.
Day 2: Learn cite a source, draw a conclusion, reach a conclusion and challenge an assumption. Use a short article or textbook passage. Identify where the source comes from, state one assumption, and draw a cautious conclusion.
Day 3: Learn question a premise and justify a position. Retrieve all ten collocations from Cluster 1 without looking. Then write an argument in which one premise is questioned rather than simply rejected.
Day 4: Learn compelling evidence, credible source, reliable measure and valid conclusion. Build a four-column contrast table: what does each phrase evaluate, what evidence would justify it, what nearby phrase could be confused with it, and what would misuse look like?
Day 5: Learn relevant evidence, sufficient evidence and tentative conclusion. Take one broad claim and decide what evidence would be relevant, what amount might be sufficient and when the conclusion should remain tentative.
Day 6: Learn significant finding, major limitation and reasonable inference. Repair three vague sentences such as “This is important”, “The study has a problem” and “I think this means”. Replace the vague wording with precise collocations.
Day 7: Retrieval day. Test Clusters 1 and 2 from meaning to phrase. Mark each answer as immediate, hesitant or incorrect. Do not spend equal time on all phrases; focus on the hesitant and incorrect ones.
Day 8: Learn conduct an analysis, offer an interpretation, explain a mechanism and identify a pattern. Use one literary passage and one simple dataset. Practise transferring the same phrase across both contexts.
Day 9: Learn establish a relationship, draw a distinction and make a comparison. Compare two study methods or two characters. Make the basis of comparison explicit rather than merely listing differences.
Day 10: Learn highlight a contrast, assess significance and evaluate effectiveness. Write three sentences about the same example, with each sentence performing a different analytical job.
Day 11: Learn causal relationship, contributing factor, underlying mechanism and measurable outcome. Explain one everyday problem without overclaiming causation. Name a factor, propose a mechanism and define a measurable outcome.
Day 12: Learn control a variable, test a hypothesis, collect data and analyse data. Describe a simple experiment from beginning to end using all four collocations naturally.
Day 13: Learn estimate probability and calculate a rate. Then retrieve all ten Cluster 4 collocations. Use one numerical example so the language remains tied to an actual operation.
Day 14: Mixed transfer day. Use five collocations from Clusters 3 and 4 in English, Science, Mathematics or Humanities. The target is not merely correctness but flexibility across subjects.
Day 15: Learn develop an argument, address a counterargument, make a concession and offer a rebuttal. Build one counterargument paragraph from these four functions.
Day 16: Learn qualify a claim, strengthen an argument, weaken a claim and support a conclusion. Take one overconfident paragraph and revise it so the claims better match the available evidence.
Day 17: Learn provide justification and maintain coherence. Then retrieve all ten Cluster 5 collocations. Ask whether each chunk names a sentence function, an argument-level operation or an evidence relationship.
Day 18: Learn underlying assumption, practical implication, broader context, central issue and key factor. Use a newspaper-style issue or school problem. Identify which phrase belongs to hidden belief, real-world consequence, surrounding frame, main question and important contributor.
Day 19: Learn significant difference, substantial evidence, plausible explanation, coherent argument and nuanced interpretation. Build contrast pairs: significant versus substantial, plausible versus proven, coherent versus merely correct, nuanced versus complicated.
Day 20: Learn implement a policy, enforce a regulation, exercise authority, ensure accountability and assume responsibility. Map a real or hypothetical institution from decision to implementation to enforcement to review.
Day 21: Learn improve access, promote equity, protect welfare, assess feasibility and improve efficiency. Evaluate one proposal using all five phrases. Notice that a policy can improve one dimension while weakening another.
Day 22: Learn achieve an outcome, improve effectiveness, increase reliability, reduce uncertainty and minimise bias. Apply them to a study method, experiment or technology tool.
Day 23: Learn build resilience, support adaptation, ensure sustainability, introduce innovation and overcome a constraint. Explain how a system responds to change, pressure or limited resources.
Day 24: Learn shape perception, influence behaviour, affect motivation, form an identity and reflect culture. Use one social or literary example for each. Keep influence separate from total control.
Day 25: Learn challenge a norm, follow a convention, express an attitude, gain experience and consider a perspective. Analyse how people, groups or writers behave within social expectations.
Day 26: Learn organise an argument, structure a paragraph, improve coherence, increase precision and shift emphasis. Edit one existing piece of writing rather than composing from scratch.
Day 27: Learn signal a transition, summarise an argument, reflect on experience, retrieve from memory and transfer knowledge. Use the final two phrases to describe the learning process itself.
Day 28: Full meaning-to-collocation retrieval test. Attempt all 100 before checking. Separate wrong answers from slow answers; the slow answers are often the most important next targets.
Day 29: Subject-switch test. Choose twenty collocations and use each in two different domains. For example, identify a pattern in a poem and a graph; evaluate effectiveness in a policy and a study method.
Day 30: Timed writing test. Write one analytical paragraph, one argumentative paragraph and one short evaluation. Use collocations only where they genuinely express the reasoning move. After writing, circle every target chunk and ask whether a simpler or different phrase would have been more accurate.
Seven levels of collocation mastery
Level 1 — Recognition: the learner recognises the phrase and understands its broad meaning when reading. “Draw a conclusion” looks familiar, but the learner may not yet produce it independently.
Level 2 — Meaning: the learner can explain what the whole chunk does. “Qualify a claim” means narrow or refine a claim so it better matches the evidence.
Level 3 — Grammar frame: the learner knows how the collocation behaves in a sentence: provide evidence for, draw a conclusion from, relationship between, reflect on, access to.
Level 4 — Partner selection: the learner can choose the natural partner among plausible alternatives. English prefers make a claim over do a claim, draw a distinction over pull a distinction, and major limitation over a vague big problem.
Level 5 — Production: the learner can use the whole collocation naturally in an original sentence where its reasoning function is real.
Level 6 — Delayed retrieval: the learner can produce the phrase from a meaning cue after hours or days without seeing the first word.
Level 7 — Transfer under pressure: the learner can select the right chunk in a new subject or timed task when several related collocations compete for retrieval.
A student can be strong at one level and weak at another. Someone may recognise assess feasibility immediately but write check feasibility under pressure. Another may retrieve significant difference quickly but apply it to every small contrast. Diagnose the stage that fails before adding more phrases.
A collocation notebook that records more than definitions
A useful collocation notebook should make every entry retrievable and transferable. A single line saying “compelling evidence = convincing evidence” is too weak. Use a richer entry structure.

Contrast natural and unnatural combinations. Assess both recognition and production. Multiple-choice questions can test whether a phrase looks natural, but they do not prove that the student can retrieve it. Include meaning-to-chunk prompts, sentence repair, paragraph construction and subject-switch tasks. A student who can recognise the phrase but cannot use it needs a different intervention from a student who uses the phrase fluently but imprecisely.
Parent use: improve natural academic English without turning home into a test centre
Parents can help by noticing useful word partnerships in ordinary reading. If a newspaper says a report “raises concern”, a child can collect the whole phrase rather than only the word concern. If a teacher comment says “support your claim”, the useful unit is the entire expression.
When a child uses an understandable but unusual combination, avoid stopping the conversation for a long correction. Offer the natural chunk and continue. “Yes, you can say draw a conclusion here.” Later, revisit the phrase briefly. This protects fluency while improving accuracy.
Use one contrast at a time. “Would you make a claim or do a claim?” “Would you test a hypothesis or prove it?” “Is this evidence relevant, sufficient or compelling?” Small comparisons build durable language without requiring formal worksheets.
Encourage paraphrase when retrieval fails. If assess feasibility does not arrive, the child can say “check whether the plan can realistically be done”. Then return to the target phrase. Communication should continue while the compact academic chunk is being strengthened.
Frequently asked questions about academic collocations
Are these an official Grade 9 collocation list?
No single international Grade 9 curriculum uses exactly these 100 combinations. “Grade 9” identifies a broadly comparable stage of secondary education and a common search term. The list prioritises high-utility academic combinations useful across essays, analysis, evidence, research, data and cross-curricular reading.
Why learn chunks instead of individual vocabulary words?
Individual words provide meaning, but chunks provide usable patterns. Knowing conclusion does not automatically tell a learner that English commonly says draw a conclusion, reach a conclusion, tentative conclusion and support a conclusion. Collocations reduce the number of choices that must be assembled during writing.
How many collocations should a student learn each week?
Ten to fifteen can be manageable when old chunks are repeatedly retrieved and reused, but the right number depends on prior knowledge. Are alternative collocations sometimes also correct?
Yes. English often allows several natural combinations with different shades of meaning. We can draw or reach a conclusion. We can present or provide evidence. We can offer or provide a rebuttal. The aim is not to pretend only one phrase is ever legal. The aim is to learn common, natural and functionally precise options.
Do British and American English affect these phrases?
Most collocations remain the same, but spelling can differ. British English commonly uses analyse; American English commonly uses analyze. The underlying phrase analyse/analyze data is the same. Students should follow the spelling conventions required by their school or publication context while keeping the collocational relationship intact.
Should students memorise the phrases exactly?
Exact wording is useful because collocations are partly conventional, but memorisation should be connected to meaning. A student who repeats assess significance without knowing what significance is cannot use the phrase well. Learn the chunk, the reasoning job, the grammar frame and at least one contrast.
Can simple language be better than an academic collocation?
Yes. Use the collocation when it clarifies the reasoning. “The bus arrived late” is better than forcing abstract language into a simple observation. Academic phrases are tools, not decorations. The best wording is the wording that makes the intended distinction clearly and naturally.
How can a student check whether a combination is natural?
Look for repeated use in high-quality texts, dictionaries with collocation information, corpora, reputable educational resources and subject-specific reading. One unusual example proves little. Repeated patterns across serious writing provide stronger evidence that a combination is conventional.
What if a student knows the phrase but cannot use it under exam pressure?
That is usually a retrieval problem rather than a knowledge problem. Practise meaning-to-chunk recall, short timed completions and one-minute paragraph tasks. Repeated retrieval should gradually reduce the time needed to access the whole phrase.

That stored language frees attention for harder work: deciding whether evidence is sufficient, whether a relationship is causal, whether an interpretation is plausible, whether a counterargument deserves concession, or whether a conclusion should be qualified.
