Find your next music-word step
Choose a route, notice one sound feature and explain a small pattern.
Children often use one word such as high or fast to describe several different changes in sound. This lesson for ages 7–9 gives twenty useful words a clear job: name the sound, follow its timing, compare pitch and volume, and describe a small musical action. A four-beat pattern makes the differences visible and gives children something concrete to explain.
The English, Mandarin, Hindi and Russian editions share word numbers, the practice pattern and the same original story. Every card gives meanings and examples in all four languages and links to the corresponding card in the other editions. Start with the language your child understands best, then compare one new version while keeping the activity the same.
You can use a finger, a suitable quiet tapping surface and four drawn boxes. Pictures, pointing and silent gestures can carry the language activity when sound-making is inconvenient. No instrument, recording, notation system or particular musical tradition is assumed. An adult can read and mark the beat while the child chooses a comfortable way to respond.

Chapter 1–4
Chapter 5–8
Chapter 9–12
Begin with one comparison at a time. Show a high and a low note through a comfortable adult demonstration or describe two labelled examples. Keep their volume similar. Next compare a quieter and a moderately louder version of the same small action. Ask which feature changed; this separates knowing a label from noticing its meaning.
If a child says high when they mean loud, give a short model: “This sound is louder; its pitch stayed the same.” If the idea is understood in a familiar language, add the new language phrase. If several changes happen together, simplify the example so there is a clearer feature to describe.
Choose one useful goal: distinguish loud from fast, keep four even beats, or explain a silent space. Pointing to labelled cards can show meaning before a long sentence is ready. Record whether the response was independent, supported by a picture, or repeated after an adult.
The words form connected groups. Music, sound, silence, voice and instrument name what we discuss. Beat, rhythm and melody organise what happens. High and low compare pitch; loud and quiet compare loudness; fast and slow compare tempo. Steady and the final action words help explain how we take part.
Languages may use overlapping everyday words for volume and speed. Hindi तेज़ and धीमा need the full phrase to make the comparison clear here. Mandarin and Russian also change wording according to the sentence. Compare the whole example instead of expecting a single label to cover every English meaning.
Pinyin marks Mandarin tones. The Hindi and Russian Roman-letter aids are approximate, with Russian stress marked on the word. They help compare written labels; listening to a fluent speaker remains useful for spoken language. The learning entries are matched by meaning, so a natural phrase may contain several words.
1. music · 音乐
English: music
Sounds and silences organised or experienced as a musical expression. Music takes many forms across communities. Our small exercise uses a regular beat, while other music can move more freely; the exercise is one example, rather than a rule for all music.
We make a short piece of music together.
简体中文·普通话: 音乐 (yīnyuè)
作为音乐表达而组织或体验的声音与停顿。不同群体的音乐形式很多。本练习用规律拍子,其他音乐可以更自由,因此练习只是一例,不是所有音乐的规定。
我们一起创作一小段音乐。
हिन्दी: संगीत (saṅgīt)

Лёгкое постукивание даёт короткий звук.
Name a sound source and one feature you can describe.
3. silence · 无声
English: silence
A period with no intended sound in our pattern. Background sounds may still be present in the room. A silent beat can be part of music: the count continues even when the player does not tap.
On beat three, we leave a moment of silence.
Point to beat three and let the count continue without a tap.
4. voice · 嗓音
English: voice
The sound a person produces when speaking, humming or singing. People have different voices and comfortable ranges. Use an easy, natural voice for the activity, and let listening or pointing be an equally useful way to participate.
I use my voice to sing two comfortable notes.
简体中文·普通话: 嗓音 (sǎngyīn)
人说话、哼唱或歌唱时发出的声音。每个人嗓音与舒适音域不同。活动用自然轻松嗓音,也可以通过听或指认参与。
我用嗓音唱两个舒服的音。
हिन्दी: आवाज़ (āvāz)

Я пою голосом две удобные ноты.
Choose speaking, humming, singing or a description to explore voice.
5. instrument · 乐器
English: instrument
An object used to make music, such as a drum, flute or shaker. Instruments are played in different ways. Here instrument means a musical object, rather than a scientific measuring tool; no particular instrument is required for the word lesson.
The picture shows an instrument that can be shaken.

Identify an instrument in a picture and explain the action used to play it.
6. beat · 拍子
English: beat
The regular pulse we follow in this exercise, or one point in that pulse. Keep the spacing even for the four-count pattern. Here beat concerns musical time, rather than winning a contest or striking someone.
We mark four evenly spaced beats.
Mark four even pulses with a small hand movement.
7. rhythm · 节奏
English: rhythm
The pattern of sounds and silences in time. Our rhythm can place two taps inside one beat and leave another beat silent. Beat and rhythm can work together without having one sound for every beat.
Our rhythm has five taps across four beats.
Count sound marks separately from the beat columns.
8. melody · 旋律
English: melody
An organised sequence of musical pitches heard as a tune or line. A melody can move higher, lower or repeat a pitch. Rhythm helps shape how its notes occur in time; not every musical part needs to be a melody.
We sing a short melody that goes high, low, high.
Describe a short high-low-high tune or point to its labelled cards.
9. high · 音调高的
English: high
Higher in pitch in the chosen comparison. Pitch is how high or low a note sounds, separately from its loudness. A high note can be quiet; raising a hand is a visual sign in our activity, not a cause of higher pitch.
The higher note is sung quietly.
Compare a higher and lower example at similar volume.
10. low · 音调低的
English: low
Lower in pitch in a comparison. Low does not mean quiet in this word card. Compare two comfortable notes at a similar volume so that the intended difference is easier to describe.
The second note is lower than the first.
Say which note is lower and what it is compared with.
11. loud · 响亮的
English: loud
Having a greater loudness in a comparison. Loudness differs from pitch and speed. Learn the word through discussion or a moderate contrast; there is no need to make extreme sounds or increase a device’s volume for this activity.
We describe a louder sound without changing the beat’s speed.
Use a labelled example to discuss louder without raising a device’s volume.
12. quiet · 轻声的
English: quiet
Having a smaller loudness in the chosen comparison. A quiet sound is still a sound, whereas the marked silent beat asks for no tap. Here quiet describes volume, not the speed of the pattern.
We repeat the pattern with quiet taps.
Explain the difference between a quiet tap and a silent beat.
13. fast · 快的
English: fast
Moving through the beats at a quicker tempo in a comparison. The same pattern can be performed faster while its loudness stays similar. Fast does not automatically mean loud or high-pitched.
We try a faster version of the same four-beat pattern.
Try or describe the same pattern at a faster pace while keeping its order.
14. slow · 慢的
English: slow
Moving through beats at a slower tempo. More time separates the beats, while the order of the pattern can stay the same. Slow is not the same as quiet, even when people sometimes use overlapping everyday words.
A slower version gives us more time between beats.
Point through the same symbols more slowly and explain what changed.
15. steady · 平稳的
English: steady
Keeping an even pace through the selected stretch of beats. A steady beat can be fast or slow. Our goal is similar spacing within one version, rather than making every piece of music use the same unchanging speed.
We keep the beat steady during one repeat.
Keep the spacing even within one slow version and one faster version.
16. repeat · 重复
English: repeat
To do something again. Say which part repeats: a rhythm, a melody or a single sound. Repeating the rhythm can keep the order of taps and silences even when we deliberately change the tempo.
We repeat the four-beat rhythm twice.
Choose exactly which part repeats and show where it starts again.
17. listen · 聆听
English: listen
To pay attention to sound. Listening can focus on one feature, such as the beat’s spacing or a change in pitch. Looking at a visual cue can support participation; a word lesson should not treat one response method as proof of everyone’s understanding.
We listen for the space on beat three.
Focus on the third-beat space through listening or visual cues.
18. tap · 轻敲
English: tap
To make a light, short contact, for example with a finger on a suitable surface. Here tap is an action, not a water fitting. A small hand gesture can represent the tap when making sound is not wanted.
I tap once at the start of beat two.
Show a single gentle tap with a finger or a small gesture.
19. shake · 摇动
English: shake
To move something back and forth. In music a suitable shaker instrument can make sounds through this action. Identify the action with a picture or an adult-selected instrument; an imagined hand movement is enough for the language task.
The player gently shakes the instrument.
Match a shaking action to a suitable instrument picture.
20. sing · 唱歌
English: sing
To use the voice for musical sounds. Singing may use words or a simple vowel, with pitches in a comfortable range. Joining the activity through a gesture or a spoken description is also useful when a child chooses not to sing.
We sing a short high-low-high melody in an easy voice.
Choose an easy voiced example or describe how singing uses the voice.
The table below is our own practice notation. Each numbered column lasts one beat. ● means one gentle tap at the start of the beat; ● ● means two evenly spaced taps, one at the start and one halfway through; — means no tap for that whole beat. Keep the four beats equally spaced within one version.
An adult can mark the pulse with one small hand movement for each column while the child follows the rhythm row. Pointing through the symbols without making sound is another option. The pattern has five taps across four beats: two, one, none, two. Silence occupies time rather than deleting the third column.
Read the story in a familiar language, then find the same change in another version. Ask what stayed the same and what changed: volume, pitch, tempo or the tap pattern. The four versions preserve the activity while using natural sentences in each language.
| Part | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steady pulse | ● | ● | ● | ● |
| Rhythm | ● ● | ● | — | ● ● |
English
Four Beats, Five Taps. Ada and Sam draw four boxes for a short music activity. They agree that each box lasts one beat. Ada marks a steady pulse with a small hand movement. Sam follows the rhythm: two taps in beat one, one in beat two, silence in beat three, and two in beat four. The two taps in a box are evenly spaced, one at its start and one halfway through. They count five taps altogether, even though there are four beats. Sam first skips the silent box. Ada points to it and keeps the pulse going. “The silence takes time too,” she says. They repeat the whole pattern and leave the space in place. Next they try a slower version. The spaces between beats become longer, but the order of taps and silence stays the same. Then they describe a faster version made with quiet taps. Fast tells them about the tempo; quiet tells them about loudness. They look at a picture of a shaker instrument and mime how someone would gently shake it. After the rhythm activity, Ada uses an easy voice for a short high-low-high melody. Sam points to the pitch cards instead of singing. The higher note is quiet, so they do not call it loud just because it is high. They discuss how voice, pitch and volume describe different parts of the example. For their final change, they replace the first pair of taps with one tap. Now there are four taps across the same four beats, with the third beat still silent. They label this as a changed rhythm. They choose one pattern to repeat and explain which feature they want to keep steady.

Discuss the questions with the pattern visible. Let the child point, gesture, tap or explain. Ask for the feature that supports the answer: spacing for tempo, relative pitch for high or low, and loudness for loud or quiet. The reason is often more informative than a quickly chosen word.
For a counting error, go column by column. Count beats in one pass and sound marks in another. For a mixed description, change one feature at a time. Keep a clear distinction between understanding the word and independently performing a coordinated musical pattern.
1. How many beats are in the original pattern?
2. How many taps are in that pattern?
3. Does beat three disappear when it is silent?
4. Can a steady beat be slow?
5. Does a high note have to be loud?
6. What changes in a faster version with the same symbol order?
7. Is a quiet tap the same as no tap?
8. What does the shaker picture help us describe?
9. How many taps remain after the first pair becomes one?
10. What should repeat mean in a clear instruction?
Answer guide
- Four. Each numbered column lasts one beat.
- Five: two, one, none, two.
- No. It still occupies one beat of time.
- Yes. Steady means even spacing within that version; its tempo can be slow or fast.
- No. Pitch and loudness are different features; a high note can be quiet.
- Tempo. The beat intervals become shorter; the symbol sequence stays the same.
- No. A quiet tap still produces a sound; the marked silent cell has no tap.
- An instrument and the action shake. Its name alone does not specify a melody.
- Four: one, one, none, two. There are still four beats.
- Name the part that repeats and any feature deliberately changed, such as tempo.
The seven-day route is a flexible example. Repeat a small group of words across brief sessions and choose a comfortable response method. Return to a familiar comparison before adding a new language label. The aim is usable meaning in a fresh example, rather than finishing every activity on a fixed day.
| Day | Words | Activity | What to notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | music · sound · silence | Compare a sound with a marked silent space. | Keeps the time of the silent beat. |
| 2 | voice · instrument · sing · shake | Use pictures, a voice example or gestures. | Connects a source with an action. |
| 3 | beat · rhythm · tap | Count beat columns and sound marks separately. | Finds five taps in four beats. |
| 4 | melody · high · low | Compare two comfortable notes or labelled examples. | Describes pitch separately from loudness. |
| 5 | loud · quiet | Discuss moderate differences at the same pace. | Identifies loudness rather than tempo. |
| 6 | fast · slow · steady · repeat | Use the same pattern at two even paces. | Keeps order while explaining tempo. |
| 7 | listen · review · new use | Make a fresh row and describe one feature. | Uses the meaning beyond the story. |
For support, use sound, silence and repeat with two boxes. An adult can point to each box while the child responds through a gesture or description. Visual patterns can support discussion of timing; a labelled description can support the words for pitch. Adjust the response method to the learner rather than demanding one performance.
For a stretch task, keep the four-beat structure and replace the first two-tap cell with one tap. Ask how many sounds remain and whether there are still four beats. Then perform or describe a slower version without changing the symbol order. Separate a changed pattern from a changed tempo.
Music preferences and ways of joining differ across families and communities. Use an invented pattern, a familiar permitted example or silent gestures as appropriate. Children can describe a feature without being asked to sing alone, copy an unfamiliar tradition or share personal recordings.
Create a new three- or four-beat row and ask the child to explain one feature. Use the same words with another everyday sound or an instrument picture. Change the task while keeping the intended comparison clear. A familiar-language explanation may show a concept before its new-language wording is secure.
Notice clearer descriptions, fewer prompts, accurate symbol counts and the ability to keep pitch, loudness and tempo separate. Record support honestly. One short activity cannot establish musical ability or fluency in four languages; revisit the meanings through a different example before treating them as secure.
Do we need an instrument?
No. A finger gesture, pictures and four drawn boxes support the whole word activity. Use an adult-selected instrument only if it suits the situation.
Is beat the same as rhythm?
They are related. Here the beat is the regular pulse and rhythm is the pattern of taps and silences over it. One beat may hold more than one tap.
Can high be quiet and low be louder?
Yes. Pitch and loudness describe different features. Use a clear, comfortable comparison or labelled description to explain them.
Why do some Hindi phrases contain several words?
Everyday words can cover more than one feature. Full phrases such as fast pace and loud voice distinguish tempo from volume in this lesson. Natural translations need not have equal word counts.
Must children sing alone?
No. Pointing, speaking, drawing or following a visual pattern can show the intended meaning. Choose the response that suits the learner and the activity.
Does every music tradition follow our four-beat pattern?
No. This is one invented learning pattern. Music uses many approaches to time, sound and expression; a familiar example is a useful starting point for comparison.
Should we speed up until the child makes a mistake?
Keep the pace useful for understanding. A clear explanation at an easy tempo gives better information about the word than a rushed attempt with confused labels.
What can we learn next?
Use the time-and-planning lesson for sequence and duration, and the teamwork lesson for sharing roles. Return to one musical word in a different sound example.
