Knowing the word character is different from explaining what a character does. A child might name a title correctly but retell only a favourite picture, leaving out the difficulty that connects the events. This lesson for ages 8–10 turns twenty useful book and storytelling words into actions: notice, compare, explain and tell again. It is a guided reading resource, not a timed test or a promise that one list will produce fluent reading.

All four editions use the same twenty entry numbers and the same original paper-boat story. Each word card contains English, Mandarin, Hindi and Russian definitions and examples. Choose a familiar language to establish the meaning, then compare another language at the same numbered card. You may explore all four, but there is no requirement to learn four new labels before understanding one idea.

Use paper, a pencil and, if available, a familiar book. An adult can read aloud while the child points, draws or answers. No particular school system, library membership, device or cultural reading tradition is assumed. The story is invented for this lesson; the example title is not a claim about a published commercial book.

Chapter 1 of 12 · Check the meaning

1. Find the exact reading step to strengthen

Back to contents

Begin with a three-part check. Ask the child to point to a title, name someone in a short story and explain one event that changed the situation. These tasks separate finding a label from understanding an action and linking it to a reason. A correct title with a muddled retelling is useful information about where to begin, not evidence of poor effort.

If the child can show the right event but cannot name it, offer a short sentence model. If the child names events yet reverses them, use three picture boxes and reread the connecting sentences. If the child gives a confident explanation without support, ask which line or picture makes that explanation reasonable. Repair the exact difficulty rather than restarting every word.

Choose a small goal for one sitting: identify character and setting, distinguish a clue from a prediction, or retell three connected events. A child can understand a story heard aloud even when reading the printed words is demanding. Keep listening comprehension, decoding and the new language labels separate when deciding what help to give.

Chapter 2 of 12 · Check the meaning

2. Connect the four languages

Back to contents

Use the table as a map, not a memorisation race. The first group names book features and people who make books. The next groups organise a narrative and its difficulty. The final verbs describe what a reader does with information. Learning the connection between two entries is often more useful than reciting twenty labels without a story.

Translations match the sense used here, not every meaning of an English word. Character means a story participant, setting means place and time, and solution means a response to a difficulty. Some languages naturally use a phrase where English uses one word. Twenty refers to twenty learning entries, not an identical count of written words in each language.

Pinyin indicates Mandarin tones. Roman-letter guides for Hindi and Russian are approximate aids rather than exact recordings. Russian stress marks highlight the stressed vowel, and sentence forms can differ from dictionary forms. Read complete example sentences: English word order cannot simply be copied into every language.

Back to contents

1. book · 书

English: book
A work made for reading, viewing or listening, often arranged in pages or sections. A book may be printed or digital. Some books contain stories, while others explain real subjects; book and story are not interchangeable labels.
Our book contains a story about a missing paper boat.

Try it

Compare a storybook and an information book. Explain why both are books, even if only one contains an invented adventure.

2. page · 书页

English: page
One side of a leaf in a printed book, or a comparable displayed part of a digital work. A page can contain words, pictures or both. A page is not necessarily a complete story or a complete event.
On this page, a small boat stands beside a window.

Try it

Find a page with pictures and a page with words. Say what each page contributes without assuming one page equals one event.

3. cover · 封面

English: cover
Here, the outside covering of a book, especially the front shown to a reader. It may show a title and a picture, but these are not guaranteed. The Hindi term selected here focuses on the front cover, not every part of a binding.
The cover shows a window and a blue paper boat.

Try it

Sketch a possible front cover for the lesson’s invented story. Label it as your design, not an existing published cover.

4. title · 标题

English: title
The name given to a book, story or other work. A title can suggest a topic without telling us every event. Here it is a work’s name, not a person’s formal title or ownership of property.
The title of our invented story is The Missing Paper Boat.

Try it

Suggest a second title. Explain what it highlights and what it leaves untold.

5. author · 作者

English: author
The person who creates the written work; a work can have more than one author. The voice telling a fictional story is not automatically the real author. Do not assume that every action by a character happened in the author’s life.
The author decides which events to include in the story.

Try it

Separate the author, a character and the voice telling the story. Do not assume they are the same person.

4. Pictures, participants and structure: words 6–10

Back to contents

6. illustrator · 插画家

English: illustrator
A person who creates pictures for a book or another text. An author can also be the illustrator, but the roles are different. The Hindi word can mean an artist more broadly; the book context narrows the intended meaning.
The illustrator draws the curled edge of the paper.

Try it

Draw one useful story illustration. Explain which information your picture adds or makes easier to notice.

7. character · 角色

English: character
A person, animal or other being presented as taking part in a story. In fiction, an object can be given a speaking role. Here character means a story participant, not a letter, a written symbol or someone’s moral qualities.
Lina and Omar are the two main characters.

Try it

Name two characters and give one action for each. Keep the window in the setting unless your changed story makes it act like a being.

8. setting · 故事背景

English: setting
Where and when a story takes place, with surrounding conditions that matter. A room on a windy afternoon is a setting, not a character. This lesson does not use setting to mean an adjustment on a machine.
The setting is a shared room on a windy afternoon.

Try it

Give both where and when. Change the time and explain whether the place must also change.

9. beginning · 开头

English: beginning
The opening part of a story as it is told. It can introduce characters, a place or an important situation. A story can begin by showing a later event, so its beginning is not always the earliest event in the characters’ lives.
At the beginning, Lina places her boat beside the window.

Try it

Point to the opening event. Explain what the reader knows at that point, without borrowing later knowledge.

10. middle · 中间部分

English: middle
The part between the opening and the ending. Actions can develop, questions can grow and characters may try different responses. It need not occupy exactly the central page or contain the same number of sentences as the other parts.
In the middle, the children search and compare clues.

Try it

Choose two middle events. Explain how the second follows from the first instead of counting pages.

Chapter 5 of 12 · Explore the word cards

5. Difficulties, events and clues: words 11–15

Back to contents

11. ending · 结尾

English: ending
The final part of a story as it is told. An ending may solve a problem, leave a question open or show a change. Ending and solution can overlap, but they are not the same label for every story.
The ending shows the children moving their boats away from the open window.

Try it

Identify the final event and the solution separately. Can they occur in different sentences?

12. problem · 难题

English: problem
A difficulty or situation that calls for a response. In this story the missing boat is the problem. A problem need not be a dangerous emergency, and a character facing one is not therefore a bad person.
The problem is that Lina cannot find her paper boat.

Try it

State the difficulty in one sentence. Avoid replacing it with a judgement about a character.

13. solution · 解决办法

English: solution
A way of resolving the named problem. A solution must connect to that difficulty: finding the boat resolves its disappearance, while moving the boats may help prevent a repeat. Here solution is not a liquid mixture.
Their solution is to look behind the basket and retrieve the boat.

Try it

Connect the proposed solution to the named problem. Explain why drawing another boat is not the same as finding the missing one.

14. event · 事件

English: event
Something that happens in a story or in real life. Opening a window and finding a boat are events; blue is a description, not an event by itself. Not every event has equal importance to the central problem.
One event is the gust moving a loose sheet across the table.

Try it

Sort these into event or description: the sheet moves; the boat is blue. Explain your choice.

15. clue · 线索

English: clue
A detail that helps someone work out an answer. A clue can support an idea without proving it alone. The word here means information used in reasoning, not a guarantee that the first explanation is correct.
The blue corner behind the basket is a clue.

Try it

Choose a clue and explain which idea it supports. Say what it does not prove on its own.

Chapter 6 of 12 · Explore the word cards

6. What readers do: words 16–20

Back to contents

16. predict · 预测

English: predict
To say what you think may happen, usually using what you already know. Here the focus is a future story event. A prediction can be reasonable even if later events differ; name the information behind it rather than presenting it as a fact.
I predict that the loose sheet may move again because the window is still open.

Try it

Before the final paragraph, make a prediction with may or might. Return later to see whether it happened.

17. explain · 解释

English: explain
To make an idea clearer by giving relevant information or reasons. Repeating an answer more loudly is not necessarily explaining it. A useful explanation connects what happened with the details that support the idea.
Omar explains why they should check behind the basket.

Try it

Use a because sentence that connects your idea with a relevant story detail.

18. retell · 复述

English: retell
To tell a story again, often in your own words. Keep the important events and relationships faithful to the version you read. Retelling does not require word-for-word copying, but inventing a new event should be labelled as a change.
I retell how the children use a clue to find the boat.

Try it

Retell the problem, search and discovery in your own words. Keep new inventions for a separate version.

19. imagine · 想象

English: imagine
To form an idea or picture in your mind. You can imagine a different setting or a speaking boat in a new story. Mark invented possibilities clearly when comparing them with what the original text actually says.
We imagine a new story in which the boat can speak.

Try it

Invent a speaking boat. Announce the change clearly before telling the new story.

20. detail · 细节

English: detail
A particular piece of information in a description or story. Some details help explain the main event, while others create a picture or mood. Here detail means information, not a spare part for a machine.
The curled blue corner is a small but useful detail.

Try it

Compare a useful clue detail with a decorative detail. Explain how each contributes without saying decoration is always useless.

7. The Missing Paper Boat in four languages

Back to contents

Read one language version first. Stop before the children find the boat and ask for a prediction about what they may discover. After reading, separate what the text states from what you infer. The blue corner is visible information; its being the missing boat is an idea to check. Later confirmation changes what the reader knows.

The four versions carry the same important events, although their wording is not mechanically identical. Find the shared problem, clue and solution across two languages. Do not judge a translation only by whether words occupy the same position. A clear retelling preserves the connections between events while allowing natural language patterns.

English

The Missing Paper Boat. On a windy afternoon, Lina and Omar are making paper boats in a shared room. Lina folds a blue boat and puts it on the table beside an open window. Omar is drawing a small flag for his own boat. A gust pushes a loose sheet of paper across the table. Lina turns to pick up a pencil. When she looks back, her boat is gone. She checks beside her book, but it is not there. “Perhaps someone moved it,” she says. Omar does not know. He looks at the open window, then notices a curled blue corner behind a basket on the floor. “That might be part of your boat,” he says. “The wind moved the loose sheet. It may have moved the boat too. Let’s check rather than decide yet.” They look behind the basket and find the blue boat. Lina lifts it carefully; one side is bent, but she can straighten it. They did not see the boat move, so the wind explanation remains their supported idea, not something they directly witnessed. Finding the boat solves the immediate problem. To reduce the chance of another boat being blown off the table, they move their work away from the window. At the end, Lina draws a tiny basket on her flag. Omar asks why. “It reminds me of the clue that helped us look in the right place,” she explains. Then they begin a new story in which a paper boat can tell its own adventure. They agree that this speaking boat belongs to their imagined version, not to what actually happened in the first story.

Chapter 8 of 12 · Practise and plan

8. Discuss, practise and check

Back to contents

Treat the questions as discussion prompts, not a speed contest. Let the child point to the story, draw or respond in a familiar language. Note whether the answer was independent, supported by a reread, or copied after a model. These show different levels of support; they are not all independent recall.

A reasonable alternative answer may be better than a memorised sentence. Ask for a relevant reason. At the same time, a retelling should not quietly add an event that was never in the story. Give invention its own space: first tell the original, then announce a changed version and explain the change.

1. Who are the main characters?

2. Give the setting’s place and time.

3. What is the immediate problem?

4. Which detail suggests where to look?

5. Did the children see the wind move the boat?

6. Predict one possible next event before reading the discovery.

7. What resolves the disappearance?

8. Is a speaking boat in the first story?

9. Does a retelling need the exact original words?

10. Must every ending fully solve every problem?

Answer guide

  1. Lina and Omar. The window and basket are objects in the setting, not acting beings in this version.
  2. A shared room on a windy afternoon. A country or a precise clock time is not stated.
  3. Lina cannot find her paper boat. A bent side becomes visible later, but it is not the original disappearance problem.
  4. The curled blue corner behind the basket. It supports checking there before the children know what it is.
  5. No. They saw a loose sheet move. Wind moving the boat is a supported explanation, not a witnessed event.
  6. They may look behind the basket and find the boat, because the blue corner suggests it. Other supported possibilities can be discussed; a prediction is not certainty.
  7. Looking behind the basket and retrieving the boat. Moving the work away from the window is a later preventative choice.
  8. No. The children invent that in a separate new version. Label the change instead of adding it silently to a retelling.
  9. No. Use your own words while keeping important events and relationships accurate.
  10. No. This story resolves its main search, but other stories may leave questions open. A story map is a tool, not a universal formula.

Chapter 9 of 12 · Practise and plan

9. A flexible seven-day route

Back to contents

This route is a flexible example. Repeat a row when it is useful and stop while the activity is still manageable. A brief, meaningful use of three words is more informative than ticking twenty boxes after an adult supplies every answer. Return to older words before adding new ones, and include a different short story when checking transfer.

DayWordsActivityWhat to notice
1book · page · cover · title · authorExplore a familiar book; separate its name from its maker.Finds a feature without assuming every book has the same design.
2illustrator · character · settingDraw one scene and label who, where and when.Distinguishes a creator from a story participant.
3beginning · middle · endingArrange three drawings of the story.Explains connections instead of dividing pages into equal piles.
4problem · solution · eventConnect the disappearance, search and discovery.Matches the solution to the actual difficulty.
5clue · predict · explain · detailPause before the discovery and give a supported idea.Separates observed information from an explanation to check.
6retell · imagineTell the original, then clearly announce one changed version.Keeps retelling faithful and invention labelled.

Chapter 10 of 12 · Support and continue

10. Support, stretch and respectful choices

Back to contents

For support, keep only character, problem and ending visible. Read the story aloud and let the child arrange three drawings. Add a sentence frame only if it helps: “The problem is … because …”. Pictures, gestures or a familiar communication aid can show meaning. These teaching choices are not a diagnosis or an individual treatment plan.

For a stretch task, change one condition: the window is closed in the new version. Which explanation now needs reconsideration? The clue behind the basket may still justify looking there, but the earlier wind explanation has less support. Ask the child to revise one connection rather than replacing every sentence with harder vocabulary.

Respect a child’s choice of examples. Fictional characters allow discussion without asking children to reveal private family difficulties. Books can come from any language and reading tradition. The simple story map is one useful tool, not a rule that every story must have a single problem, a tidy solution or a happy ending.

Chapter 11 of 12 · Support and continue

11. Check understanding in a different story

Back to contents

Check a new story rather than repeating the paper-boat answers. Ask who takes part, where and when it happens, what changes and which detail supports an explanation. Begin with a familiar language, then invite one new-language label. A missing translation does not automatically mean the child missed the concept.

Notice more accurate connections, a clearer distinction between text and imagination, fewer prompts or a faithful retelling in new words. Do not combine these into an invented fluency score. One week’s practice cannot certify reading ability in four languages. If an explanation remains unclear, reread the relevant passage and reduce the task to two connected events.

Chapter 12 of 12 · Support and continue

12. Questions, references and onward learning

Back to contents

Must children use all four languages at once?

No. Establish the meaning in a familiar language. Add one other language when it supports curiosity rather than interrupting comprehension. The matching word numbers keep the choice open.

Can an adult read while the child listens?

Yes. Discussing a story heard aloud can be the starting point. Record that support honestly; it is not the same task as independently decoding the printed passage.

Is a character always a person?

No. Animals and imagined beings or objects can participate in fiction. In this particular story the boat does not speak; a speaking boat belongs to the explicitly changed version.

Is every detail a clue?

No. A detail may build a picture, mood or rhythm. It becomes a clue in a particular question when it helps support an answer. Relevance depends on what you are trying to work out.

What if a reasonable prediction is wrong?

Discuss the earlier evidence and the new information. A prediction is provisional, not a promise. Changing an idea after reading more can be a useful response to evidence.

Should a retelling repeat every sentence?

No. Select important events and keep the relationships accurate. A brief retelling can be faithful, while a long one can still be misleading if it changes who did what or why.

Do the four editions match word for word?

No. They match the intended learning meanings and important events. Natural phrases and grammar differ. The examples illustrate selected senses rather than every possible use of each English word.

How can we continue after this lesson?

Use three entries to discuss a new story. The time-and-planning lesson can help with event order, and the teamwork lesson can support explaining a shared decision. Return to these words later; finishing a page is not permanent mastery.
