SEAB’s 2026 secondary GCE rules allow highlighting questions in question papers and answer booklets. They advise candidates against highlighting any part of their answers because it may make those answers harder to read.
The same booklet says to submit answers in the language of the question paper unless the questions instruct otherwise. Read the instructions for the specific task before starting.
- Highlight only the question where permitted.
- Keep your written answers clear and legible.
- Check the language required by each question.
- Use the instructions for your qualification and year.
Know where the question ends and your response begins
Some booklets put the question and the answer space on the same page. If you use a highlighter, mark only the printed question where allowed. Leave your response clear so a marker can read it easily.
For example, you might highlight “give two reasons” in the question and write the two reasons normally in the answer space. Keep the highlighter away from the explanation and any labels you write.

Check the language instruction before answering
Use the language in which the paper is set unless the question instructs otherwise. Read the full task first, particularly where it asks for a translation or another response with a specific language requirement.
If you are preparing with a practice paper, identify the instruction and language before drafting. Use the same sequence during a timed rehearsal.
