How to Appeal GCE N-Level, O-Level or A-Level Results | SEAB Review Guide

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

If you want SEAB to review a year-end GCE N-Level, O-Level or A-Level result, apply within the appeal period announced for that results release. School candidates apply through their school. Private candidates apply through SEAB’s Candidates Portal. Check the subject fee and make sure payment is completed in time for your application to go through.

The review covers marking and a clerical recheck. Separately, check any admission or acceptance dates that matter to you. The exam-result review and the application for a school or course can follow different schedules, so record each deadline on its own.

  • Find the year-end notice for your exam and candidate type.
  • Confirm which subject you want reviewed, the fee and the submission deadline.
  • Complete the application and payment through the correct channel.
  • Check any admissions or acceptance deadlines while waiting for the outcome.

What a GCE results review covers

SEAB describes the year-end review as a check of script marking together with a full clerical recheck. The review outcome arrives through the route for your candidate type. SEAB’s year-end guidance says candidates receive the outcome without an individual report explaining their performance.

Before deciding, name the actual question you want answered. “I want SEAB to review my Mathematics result” fits this process. “I want to know which topics to practise” is a learning question you can work through separately. “I want to change my posted course” calls for the applicable admissions process.

Check the exact examination year on the result. O-Level or A-Level results may arrive in the next calendar year. When searching for notices, use the year of the examination and confirm that the notice describes the correct release exercise.

How school candidates apply

Contact your school during the stated review period. Ask how to submit the request, what fee applies per subject and when payment must be completed. Use the school’s instructions for any form, collection process or preferred contact.

If a parent is helping, sit down with the student and confirm the exact subject on the result slip. Write down the deadline and who will handle the submission. If you are considering several subjects, calculate the fee for the requests you intend to make using the figures announced for that exercise.

After completing the school’s steps, keep any acknowledgement or receipt and ask how the result will be communicated. The year-end GCE process states that school candidates receive the outcome letter through their school.

How GCE private candidates apply

Use the SEAB Candidates Portal during the stated appeal period. Sign in with the credentials associated with your examination registration. Follow the instructions for selecting the subject and paying the announced fee. SEAB says the application is submitted for processing after successful payment.

Check for an acknowledgement before moving on. An incomplete payment or a form still open on a device may require further action. If you encounter a problem, use the official contact route promptly and keep any receipt or error reference that will help explain what happened.

The official GCE year-end guidance says private candidates receive their review outcome by email. Check the address associated with your account and look for the message within the published outcome timeline. Use the official contact if the expected date has passed and you cannot find it.

Should you request a review?

Start with the decision in front of you. If you want a formal check of a particular grade, look at the process, fee and deadline for that subject. If you also need a course decision, identify which choices are available with the current results and where a different result could matter. Keep those two tasks separate.

For example, a student is surprised by one grade and is also preparing an application for the next intake. The student asks the school about the review, confirms the subject and cost, then checks the application options that are open on the results already issued. They can make an informed decision about both tasks on the same day.

A practice result or preliminary grade can explain why a student feels surprised. It cannot tell the family what the review will find. Make the decision with room for the result to stay as issued and ask the relevant admissions authority how an amended result would be handled if one is issued.

What to do while waiting for an outcome

Keep an exam-review checklist and an admissions checklist. For the review, record the subject, payment, submission and expected response. For admissions, record the application deadline, any acceptance or reporting date, and the contact for questions about amended results.

Use the current admissions instructions if you need to apply while a review is pending. Ask the relevant authority how a revised result could be considered. If you already have an offer or posting, check the instructions for retaining or reporting for that place while you consider any separate posting appeal.

One useful question is “What action do I have to complete by the deadline with the results I have now?” Another is “If SEAB later issues an amended result, whom should I contact and what proof will I need?” Get the answers for your own exercise because different routes can use different processes.

Parents can make this easier by taking responsibility for writing down dates and receipts. Let the student talk through course preferences and practical considerations. That way a single disputed result does not absorb all the time available for making a considered application.
