Can a GCE Private Candidate Appeal Their Results? SEAB’s Deadline and Payment Steps

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

If you sat a Singapore-Cambridge GCE examination as a private candidate, SEAB allows you to apply for a review of results through the Candidates Portal. Its private-candidate guidance says to submit the request within five working days from results release, counting the release date itself. The application and electronic payment must both reach SEAB before the deadline. A fee applies for each subject.

Start by identifying the subject and checking the exact deadline displayed for your examination. Decide which subject you want reviewed and check that the payment and submission are both confirmed. If an admissions deadline is approaching, deal with it separately while the review is pending.

  • Save your official results and identify the subject you want reviewed.
  • Check the current appeal window and how it counts working days.
  • Submit and pay through the designated portal before it closes.
  • Keep proof of the request and payment.
  • Continue tracking admissions and monitor the registered email address.

Check the deadline before deciding

Open the official SEAB notice or portal task for your examination. Record the release date and the final submission date. The published five-working-day window for private candidates includes the day of release. Use the applicable dates and time shown by SEAB, especially when a weekend or holiday falls nearby.

Check your sign-in and registered email early. If the portal is inaccessible, contact SEAB through its official route with the examination and subject details. Explain which action you cannot complete and when the window closes. Keep a record of the enquiry and follow the instructions you receive.

Decide which subject you want reviewed

Read the grade as shown on the official record and check that you have selected the correct subject. SEAB charges by subject and says its results go through multiple checks before release. It notes that most reviews do not produce a grade change. Consider which subject you actually want reviewed before paying.

A results review concerns an awarded result. If the issue is an exam-day event, check the separate instructions for Special Consideration. If the problem is retrieving a document, use the relevant records route. Give SEAB the precise problem if you are unsure which procedure applies.

Verify both submission and payment

Complete the requested steps in the Candidates Portal. Save the acknowledgement and electronic payment confirmation and check that they correspond to the right examination and subject. A saved draft or an attempted payment can leave an action outstanding. Use the portal or official assistance route if the status is unclear.

SEAB’s private-candidate page says it emails the outcome to the registered address within six weeks after the appeal deadline. Save the outcome when it arrives. If SEAB adjusts the awarded grade, ask any institution considering your application how it wants the updated result.

Worked example

A candidate wants one subject reviewed and is also applying for a course. They check the SEAB deadline, submit the review and verify that payment went through. They record the expected outcome window and keep the appeal reference.

The course application closes before the appeal outcome is expected. The candidate follows the institution’s current instructions and asks what evidence it accepts if the result changes later. They track the course deadline and the appeal outcome on separate calendar lines.

Frequently asked questions

Can I submit now and pay after the appeal window closes?

SEAB says both the application and electronic payment must be received before the deadline for the request to be processed.

Do I submit through my former school?

Use the private-candidate route in the Candidates Portal if that is the category under which you sat. If you sat as a school candidate, follow the instructions for that category.

Where does SEAB send the decision?

Its private-candidate guidance says it emails the outcome to the registered email address. Check that account and save the response.
