Lights Out | You Are Allowed Not to Know — Why Specialisation Makes Us Powerful and Dependent

You are allowed not to know.

That may be one of civilisation’s most valuable permissions.

You can become very good at one thing because other people keep thousands of other things working around you.

The one-sentence answer

Specialisation increases collective capability by allowing people and organisations to concentrate on narrower tasks, but that same concentration creates dependence on everyone else continuing to perform the complementary tasks.

Power and dependence are not opposites here.

They grow together.


Imagine one person trying to live without specialisation

She grows all her food.

Builds her shelter.

Finds and treats her own water.

Makes her own clothing.

Produces her own tools.

Treats her own illness.

Teaches her own children every subject.

Builds her own communication system.

Generates her own energy.

Repairs every machine she uses.

She might become impressively self-reliant in a limited way.

She will also have almost no time to become a neurosurgeon, semiconductor physicist, orchestral violinist, bridge engineer or historian.

Human time is finite.

Specialisation is one way civilisation spends that finite time more deeply.

The surgeon is surrounded by people she depends on

A surgeon looks highly capable.

She is.

But her capability depends on a civilisation that allows her to specialise.

  • Farmers and food systems keep her fed.
  • Teachers and universities trained her.
  • Engineers keep electricity and water available.
  • Manufacturers produce instruments.
  • Scientists develop medicines.
  • Laboratories provide tests.
  • Cleaners and infection-control systems keep spaces usable.
  • Administrators coordinate schedules and records.
  • Pharmacists manage medicines.
  • Technicians maintain machines.

The surgeon’s excellence is real.

So is her dependence.

Specialisation does not remove dependence. It makes dependence productive.

Why specialisation increases capability

There are several reasons.

Practice becomes concentrated

Repeated work builds speed, pattern recognition and judgement.

Tools become specialised too

A specialist task can justify specialised equipment that would make no sense for one household to own.

Knowledge becomes deeper

A field can develop concepts, methods and professional memory beyond what a generalist could personally maintain.

Coordination creates scale

Many specialised roles can combine into an output no role could produce alone.

This is visible in factories, hospitals, orchestras, universities, ports, airlines and software companies.

It is also visible across countries.

Global supply chains allow production stages to occur where firms have particular capabilities, suppliers or advantages. The OECD’s 2025 Supply Chain Resilience Review describes these networks as major sources of efficiency, innovation, employment and access to inputs while also emphasising the need to manage concentration and disruption risk.

The price of depth is dependence

The more specialised a role becomes, the more it may depend on other roles for ordinary survival and professional function.

A chip designer cannot fabricate every chip alone.

A farmer may depend on machinery, seed, fertiliser, veterinary services, finance, weather information and transport.

A teacher depends on curricula, buildings, electricity, books, families, administrators and the wider language community.

A pilot depends on maintenance crews, air-traffic control, fuel, weather services, airport operations, engineering and certification.

This is not evidence that specialisation has failed.

It is the structure that makes the capability possible.

Dependence becomes dangerous when there is no alternative path

Not all dependence is equally risky.

You may depend on bread but have many bakeries.

A factory may depend on one proprietary component from one supplier.

A hospital may depend on a rare specialist with a very small replacement pool.

A city may depend on one corridor for a critical input.

The useful question is therefore not simply:

“Are we dependent?”

Almost every modern system is.

The better questions are:

  • How many alternatives exist?
  • How quickly can we switch?
  • Do alternatives fail for the same reason?
  • Can the function operate in a reduced mode?
  • Is some capability worth preserving locally?
  • How much buffer buys enough time to adapt?

Redundancy can look inefficient until the day it is needed

During normal operation, a spare supplier may look unnecessary.

Cross-training may look expensive.

Backup power may sit unused.

A reserve team may appear underutilised.

Redundancy often looks wasteful because its value is concentrated in exceptional moments.

But maximum efficiency and maximum resilience are not the same objective.

A civilisation has to decide how much normal-time efficiency it is willing to trade for failure-time options.

Cross-training is human redundancy

Suppose a critical function has one brilliant specialist.

The organisation appears capable.

But if nobody else can perform the function, the expert is also a single point of failure.

Cross-training does not mean everyone becomes equally expert.

It can mean:

  • someone else can perform the minimum safe function;
  • another specialist understands enough to supervise recovery;
  • procedures are documented well enough to reduce dependence on memory;
  • junior staff are deliberately developed before senior experts retire.

Education and workforce planning therefore become resilience mechanisms.

Interfaces let specialists cooperate without becoming each other

The answer to specialisation is not to make the surgeon become an electrical engineer.

It is to make the boundary between them work.

Good interfaces can include:

  • shared terminology;
  • clear handovers;
  • standards;
  • records;
  • referral pathways;
  • contracts;
  • checklists;
  • compatible data;
  • defined responsibilities;
  • feedback after the result is received.

The goal is not universal knowledge.

It is reliable cooperation between partial knowledge.


Specialisation changes the meaning of self-sufficiency

A modern city cannot become resilient simply by asking every person to become more self-sufficient.

The complexity is too high.

Instead, resilience often means preserving enough collective options.

  • Multiple sources.
  • Transferable skills.
  • Local repair.
  • Shared standards.
  • Strategic buffers.
  • Substitution pathways.
  • Training pipelines.
  • International partnerships.

A resilient civilisation does not require every part to be independent.

It requires dependence to remain manageable.

The Lights Out Event reveals the bargain

In the main Lights Out Event, the external civilisational web is removed.

The first thing that becomes visible is not merely imported products.

It is all the specialist capability that had been borrowed from elsewhere.

A local engineer may know the system extremely well but normally rely on an overseas manufacturer for one diagnostic.

A hospital may have outstanding clinicians but depend on internationally manufactured medicines and devices.

A local farm may know how to grow food but rely on imported inputs and machinery.

The separation does not make local specialists stupid.

It reveals how specialised capability had been distributed across distance.

What would adaptation look like?

If separation became permanent, specialisation would change.

Some very narrow roles might broaden.

Repair skills would become more valuable.

People might learn to fabricate replacements that were previously purchased.

Education would prioritise different skills.

Systems might be simplified so they require fewer specialised components.

Local production would expand where feasible.

Some high-complexity capabilities might shrink because the supporting network is too small.

This is not simply decline.

It is reconfiguration around a different scale of available specialisation.

The human dignity point

Specialisation creates prestige differences.

Some roles receive more status or pay than others.

That can hide a basic truth.

The highly prestigious role may depend on many less prestigious roles remaining reliable.

A surgeon needs sterile rooms.

A software executive needs electricity.

A professor needs sanitation.

A banker needs communications networks.

Dependency is not a ranking of human worth.

A civilisation should not confuse visibility or prestige with load-bearing importance.

The civilisational lesson

You do not know how to make most things you use.

That is not necessarily a failure.

It may be evidence that civilisation has made enough other capability dependable for you to spend your life becoming good at something else.

The freedom not to know everything is purchased by a civilisation that keeps enough other people able to know their parts.
