CivOS Shadow Atlas Module 05 (Almost-Code, No Images)

EXTREMISM / POLARISATION OS (Negative Lane): Narrative Irreversibility, Identity Locks, and Repair Taboo

Module ID: CivOS-ShadowAtlas-EXTREMISM_POLARISATION
Purpose: Define extremism/polarisation as a narrative + legitimacy failure regime where identity binds to policy, off-ramps are deleted (NIT), dehumanisation rises, and repair becomes taboo—making violence and breakdown “feel necessary.”

0) Definition Lock Box

0.1 Polarisation (CivOS definition) — LOCK

Polarisation is the loss of shared repair space.
It is the process by which disagreement stops being a negotiable difference and becomes a signal of identity betrayal, making coordination brittle under variance.

0.2 Extremism (CivOS definition) — LOCK

Extremism is polarisation with enforcement.
It is the emergence of identity-locked narratives that justify coercion (social, institutional, or violent) as purification, survival, or sacred duty—typically after repair optionality collapses.

0.3 Extremism is not (LOCK)

Not just “strong opinions.”
Extremism is a phase shift:

  • tradeoffs become unspeakable
  • reversals become betrayal
  • opponents become non-human categories
  • off-ramps disappear
  • violence becomes morally legitimised

1) Core Objects

1.1 Narrative irreversibility (reuse)

NIT := { OffRampDeletion, CostSilence, MoralAbsolutism, TimeLock, Dehumanisation }

1.2 Identity lock

IdentityLock := belief(policy_position) == identity_membership
When identity lock holds, changing policy becomes changing self → repair taboo.

1.3 Repair taboo

RepairTaboo := attempts to de-escalate are punished socially/institutionally

2) Phase Map: Polarisation/Extremism across P3→P0

P3 (stable)

  • disagreement exists within shared rules
  • compromise and reversal are allowed
  • institutions mediate conflicts credibly

P2 (drift)

  • social sorting increases (“us vs them”)
  • media incentives reward outrage
  • trust declines; small betrayals narratives spread

P1 (brittle)

  • identity lock widespread
  • moral absolutism rises
  • repair taboo emerges (“no compromise”)
  • dehumanisation begins to appear

P0 (collapse pockets / systemic risk)

  • violence or coercion becomes acceptable
  • institutions lose steering power
  • society fragments into rival enforcement systems (shadow governance)

3) Lane Coupling Map (Extremism Signatures)

3.1 Canonical EXTREMISM coupling signature (S-EXT)

S-EXT := (INFO→POP outrage routing high) + (NIT high) + (LEGIT hollowing) + (Dissent punished) → (Repair taboo) → (Coercion legitimised)

3.2 Typical coupling locks

  • C[INFO,POP] ↑↑ : attention captured by outrage; identity reinforcement loops
  • C[INFO,LEGIT] ↑ : narrative substitutes for performance/competence
  • C[LEGIT,POP] ↓ : trust collapses; “system is fake”
  • C[POP,SECURITY] ↑ : calls for coercion / vigilantism rise
  • C[DIP/NEGOTIATION,*] ↓ : off-ramps rejected as betrayal (even domestically)

4) Sensor Pack (EXTREMISM_POLARISATION)

4.1 Core sensors

EXT_S0 := { NIT_score, IdentityLockIndex, BetrayalLexiconRate, DehumanisationVector, RepairTabooSignals, InstitutionalMediationFailure, OutrageEconomyIndex }

Sensor A: NIT_score

Use prior NIT scoring. Extremism risk rises sharply when NIT ≥ 3.

Sensor B: Identity Lock Index (ILI)

Indicators:

  • “If you believe X, you are not one of us”
  • policy = moral identity membership
  • social excommunication for nuance

Sensor C: Betrayal Lexicon Rate (BLR)

Rising use of:

  • “traitor”, “sellout”, “enemy within”, “purity”, “degenerate”
    Meaning: repair taboo forming.

Sensor D: Dehumanisation Vector (DV)

Presence of category-freezing metaphors:

  • vermin/disease/filth/animals (or equivalent)
    Meaning: irreversibility; violence legitimisation risk.

Sensor E: Repair Taboo Signals (RTS)

Indicators:

  • de-escalators attacked more than escalators
  • compromise framed as surrender
  • negotiation framed as treason

Sensor F: Institutional Mediation Failure (IMF)

  • courts, elections, unions, schools, community leaders stop resolving conflicts
  • disputes move to street or social media enforcement
    Meaning: shift to shadow governance.

Sensor G: Outrage Economy Index (OEI)

  • incentives reward anger/attack
  • short clips dominate; context punished
Meaning: INFO lane routing becomes destabilising.

5) Mechanisms: How extremism becomes self-propagating

5.1 Identity binding removes reversibility

IdentityLock ↑ → reversal cost ↑ → repair optionality ↓

5.2 Betrayal framing kills feedback loops

Error signal → messenger punished → no correction → drift accelerates

5.3 Dehumanisation enables coercion

Once the opponent is a non-human category:

  • empathy becomes illegal
  • violence becomes “cleaning”
This is a classic NIT critical step.

5.4 Fragmentation into rival enforcement systems

When institutions lose credibility, groups create:

  • private enforcement
  • protection networks
  • ideological patrols
This links Extremism OS to Crime OS and Capture OS.

6) Containment Conditions (EXTREMISM)

Extremism remains bounded when:

  1. Repair space preserved (compromise not betrayal)
  2. Off-ramps socially permitted (NIT low)
  3. Institutions mediate credibly (IMF low)
  4. Dehumanisation blocked early (DV = 0 norm)
  5. Cost speakability exists (tradeoffs allowed)
  6. Outrage incentives reduced (OEI not dominant)

7) Repair Router (ΔAd⁺) for EXTREMISM

RL-REPAIRSPACE (restore reversible disagreement)

  • legitimise nuance publicly
  • protect “middle” voices
  • decouple identity from single policies

RL-DETABOO (remove betrayal framing)

  • explicitly permit compromise as strength
  • punish retaliation against de-escalators

RL-HUMANISE (block dehumanisation)

  • ban category-freezing metaphors
  • enforce human framing norms

RL-INSTITUTIONS (restore mediation credibility)

  • speed up adjudication
  • reduce selective impunity
  • transparent processes (closes legitimacy gap)

RL-INFO-INCENTIVES (reduce outrage routing)

  • slow media loops
  • context restoration mechanisms
  • reduce reward for misinformation/attack content

8) Failure Mode Trace (EXT module)

Trace-EXT-01 (irreversibility cascade):
Stress rises → outrage routing grows (INFO→POP) → identity lock forms → betrayal lexicon rises → NIT crosses threshold → off-ramps deleted → dehumanisation appears → repair taboo dominates → coercion legitimised → institutions lose mediation → fragmentation into rival enforcement → P1/P0 pockets

9) WordPress Paste-Ready Blocks

Block A (Definition)

Polarisation is loss of shared repair space; extremism is polarisation with enforcement. The key mechanism is narrative irreversibility (NIT): off-ramps deleted, compromise punished as betrayal, and opponents dehumanised—making repair politically impossible.

Block B (Sensors)

Track NIT score, identity lock index, betrayal lexicon rate, dehumanisation vector, repair taboo signals, mediation failure, and outrage economy incentives. Extremism risk rises sharply when NIT ≥ 3.
