Comprehension Slope Sensor measures whether a learner’s reading comprehension is improving over time.
This is not a one-time score.
This is a slope.
Comprehension is the gateway skill:
- if comprehension is weak, everything else becomes heavy
- if comprehension improves, learning accelerates across all subjects
This sensor exists to track direction, not vibes.
What This Sensor Measures
Comprehension Slope measures:
- accuracy
- does the learner correctly understand what they read?
- speed
- does comprehension happen faster with less friction?
- retention
- can the learner recall and summarise after reading?
- inference ability
- can the learner infer meaning, intent, and implications?
- error pattern
- what type of comprehension errors keep repeating?
A student can read many words and still have low comprehension if meaning is not stable.
How to Read This Sensor
Comprehension slope is healthy when:
- accuracy improves across weeks
- speed improves without losing accuracy
- the learner summarises correctly
- inferential questions become easier
- fewer misunderstandings repeat
- the learner can explain “why” not just “what”
Comprehension slope is weak when:
- progress is flat over time
- speed increases but accuracy drops (skimming)
- the learner misinterprets key details repeatedly
- inference questions remain random guessing
- comprehension collapses when text is unfamiliar
- vocabulary gaps cause constant friction
Comprehension slope controls learning velocity.
Minimum Viable Test (So Comprehension Exists)
A learner passes the minimum comprehension test when they can:
- read a short passage
- answer literal questions accurately
- summarise the main idea in one sentence
- explain one inference (“why did this happen?”)
If they can’t summarise, comprehension is not stable.
Comprehension Levels (Gauge Alignment)
Level 1 — Fragile
- frequent misunderstandings
- slow, effortful reading
- vocabulary friction dominates
Level 2 — Basic
- understands literal meaning
- struggles with inference
- slow speed
Level 3 — Functional
- accurate understanding of most texts
- can do basic inference
- speed is improving
Level 4 — Strong
- fast + accurate
- inference is reliable
- summaries are clear
- handles unfamiliar topics
Level 5 — Compounding
- comprehension becomes automatic
- can analyse tone, intent, bias
- transfer across subjects is high
- learning velocity accelerates
The One Mistake This Sensor Prevents
Many students try to improve writing by writing more.
But writing quality cannot exceed comprehension quality.
If comprehension is weak:
- vocabulary use becomes forced
- ideas become shallow
- composition becomes repetitive
- comprehension questions become guessing
This sensor forces the right order:
fix comprehension first.
Repair Actions (If Comprehension Slope Is Flat)
- patch vocabulary gaps
Comprehension cannot rise if meaning bandwidth is low.
Run Vocabulary OS sensors, especially Exposure + Connection + Repair.
https://edukatesg.com/vocab-os-sensors/ - teach main idea extraction
- headline the paragraph
- one-sentence summary
- “what is the author really saying?”
- train inference as cause-effect
- “because” chains
- motive → action → consequence
- reduce noise
- smaller passages
- clearer texts
- gradual increase in difficulty (S-curve)
- track errors by type
- detail errors
- vocabulary meaning errors
- inference errors
Repair the recurring type first.
