DEFINITION LOCK — PSLE Vocabulary (FENCE)

Vocabulary (PSLE) = the set of words a learner can retrieve and use correctly under exam load (composition + situational writing + comprehension).

A word is “owned” only if it passes FENCE:

  1. Meaning (child-simple)
  2. Collocation (natural word-friends)
  3. Sentence (clean grammar + correct tone)
  4. Swap (upgrades a boring sentence naturally)
  5. Transfer (fits inside a paragraph/story without sounding fake)

If any step fails, the word is NOT owned (it stays in repair).

DEFINITION LOCK — Scene Bank

Scene Bank = a set of realistic PSLE story situations designed to “pull” vocabulary out naturally (so words appear as a consequence of plot, emotion, action, and dialogue — not as forced decoration).

A scene is “passed” only if the learner can:

  • produce a 5-Box plan (Setup → Trigger → Escalation → Choice → Outcome/Reflection), and
  • write 2 paragraphs using 6–10 target words naturally.

DEFINITION LOCK — Natural Use

Natural use = the word is the most fitting choice for:

  • the emotion (anxious vs embarrassed vs indignant)
  • the action (trudge vs sprint vs creep)
  • the tone (whispered vs snapped vs pleaded)
  • the context (school/home/public)

Not natural = the word feels “inserted” (wrong tone, wrong intensity, wrong collocation, or awkward grammar).

DEFINITION LOCK — Transfer Reliability (TR)

TR = the ability to use a word correctly inside a paragraph under time pressure, not just in isolated sentences.

TR Pass (minimum):

  • 1 paragraph (5–7 lines) includes ≥4 target words, all correct + natural.

TR Fail:

  • any wrong meaning / weird collocation / tone mismatch / unnatural “flex”.

PSLE Vocabulary: The Word List Lie (and the Fencing Fix)

If your child “knows many words” but still writes like this:

“I was very scared. I ran very fast. It was very fun.”

…then the truth is simple:

They don’t own vocabulary. They collect vocabulary.

PSLE doesn’t reward word ownership fantasies. It rewards usable language under time pressure.

The 3 brutal realities

  1. A word you can’t use in a sentence is not your word.
  2. A word you can’t retrieve under stress is not your word.
  3. A word used wrongly is worse than a simple word used correctly.
    (“He was ecstatic when his wallet got stolen.” → instant credibility loss.)

What vocabulary is NOT (PSLE version)

  • NOT: “My child can define 200 words.”
  • NOT: “My child highlighted a word list.”
  • NOT: “My child read it once and nodded.”

What vocabulary IS

Vocabulary = a weapon you can deploy at the right moment:

The FENCE™ Method (one word = one weapon)

For every word in the Top-100 list, your child must pass 5 moves:

1) Guard (Meaning): explain in simple Primary-6 English.
2) Thrust (Collocation): say 2 natural word-pairs.

  • e.g., anxious → “anxious about the test”, “anxious glance”
    3) Lunge (Sentence): write 1 clean sentence.
    4) Parry (Swap): replace a weak word in a basic sentence.
  • “I was scared” → “I was apprehensive.”
    5) Riposte (Transfer): use it inside a 5–7 line paragraph.

If a word fails any move, it goes to the Repair Pile.

Vocabulary = the set of words you can retrieve and use correctly in writing and comprehension under exam load.

Vocabulary has 2 forms

  • Passive vocabulary: “I recognise this word.”
  • Active vocabulary: “I can use this word correctly in a sentence/paragraph.”

PSLE writing needs active vocabulary.

The FENCE™ Vocabulary Loop (PSLE Execution Model)

Step 1 — Acquire (Input)

- Recommend ONE scene from the bank based on level.
- Set the load:

5) COMPOSITION DRAFT (Guided)
- The learner writes 2 paragraphs first (not full essay).
- You enforce naturalness:
  - No more than 3 “big words” per paragraph.
  - Every target word must fit tone and context.
- After 2 paragraphs, you give:
  - 2 praise points (specific)
  - 2 fixes (specific)
  - 1 upgrade challenge
6) TIMED MINI-WRITE (Exam Conditioning)
