Rail Corridor Central is the approximately 4km stretch between Hillview and the conserved Bukit Timah Railway Station, as described by NParks in its reopening announcement. It offers a different outing from climbing Bukit Timah Hill: a linear walk through greenery and railway heritage, with several places to enter or leave.
For a first visit, choose your entry, exit and return transport before setting off. The corridor is not lit throughout at night, and NParks encourages visitors to leave before dark. Check the current access maps and notices rather than assuming that a photograph of an open trail confirms your entire route.
The pleasure here is in the connections. A bridge, an old railway building and a green stretch can belong to the same walk, but you do not need to cover every kilometre to enjoy the place. A shorter out-and-back route is a perfectly good introduction.

SECTION 1 OF 5
1. Choose one-way or out-and-back
A one-way walk gives you a changing view, but it needs a separate journey home from the finish. An out-and-back walk makes the return simpler; remember that every kilometre outward becomes another kilometre back.
At the railway-station end, our King Albert Park MRT guide helps you plan the approach. At the other end, compare your chosen access with the Hillview or Hume transport options.
Do not describe the trail distance as the total distance of your outing. The station approach, access path, detours and journey to a meal all add walking.
SECTION 2 OF 5
2. Match the entrance to the group
Read the current NParks access map for your chosen entry and exit. A staircase can work for one group and be unsuitable for another, particularly with a wheelchair or pram.
The corridor includes different surfaces: the official visitor page distinguishes bound aggregate from grass-and-gravel stretches. Check the part you will use rather than treating the entire corridor as one smooth pavement.
Ask everyone about pace and distance before committing. A route is only comfortable when the finish remains realistic for the slowest walker.
SECTION 3 OF 5
3. Enjoy heritage without obstructing the path
The Central stretch’s heritage features include conserved railway bridges and the Bukit Timah station area. Pause where there is space, keeping through movement clear.
Our Bukit Timah Railway Station guide focuses on that destination. This guide focuses on planning the walk around it.
For children, choose one observation: what suggests that trains once passed here? Let them distinguish a visible detail from a guess about how it was used.
SECTION 4 OF 5
4. Give daylight and weather a real place in the plan
Start with enough daylight to finish comfortably, including pauses and the final exit. Limited lighting at selected points does not make the whole route a night-walking destination.
Check Singapore’s current weather information before travelling. If conditions deteriorate, shorten or postpone the walk; do not let a lunch booking persuade the group to press on through a storm.
Bring water, suitable footwear and a charged phone. Save the access map so that your next decision does not depend on searching while tired.
SECTION 5 OF 5
5. Keep the optional detour optional
The Rail Corridor connects with other green destinations around Bukit Timah, but entering a nature park can add distance, different terrain and different rules.
Choose a food stop after deciding your exit, not before. Our Rail Mall guide covers one separate possibility in the Hillview area.
A good first walk leaves you with a clear memory and enough energy to return. You can explore another section next time instead of stretching this visit beyond its comfortable limit.
