Choose a route and connect material names, descriptions and making actions.
A child can know the word paper and still struggle to explain why a paper model falls over. This lesson for ages 7–9 connects twenty words to three questions: what is it made from, what is this sample like, and what do we do to make it work? Children name materials, compare a few properties and describe a small design using everyday objects and pictures.
English, Mandarin, Hindi and Russian editions share the same twenty entry numbers and the same original design story. Every word card includes all four languages. Start with a familiar language, then use the matching entry to compare another. The practical aim is to understand and explain a small idea; learning four language versions can happen gradually.
For the optional making task, an adult can provide clean paper, a cardboard base, a small paper card and suitable tape. Use labelled pictures for glass, rubber and unfamiliar objects. Children can complete the language activities entirely through pictures, drawing and discussion. Families can choose available materials without buying a special kit.

Chapter 1–4
Chapter 5–8
Chapter 9–12
Start with a familiar object or a labelled picture of a spoon. Ask “What is it?” and then “What is it made from?” Keep the answers in separate spaces: spoon belongs in the object space; wood or metal belongs in the material space. Then ask for one observable description. This reveals whether help is needed with the object name, the material name or a property word.
If the child gives an object name for a material, model one complete sentence: “This spoon is made of wood.” If the child recognises the material but cannot describe it, offer two relevant words and let them choose with a reason. If both are secure, compare two samples of the same material and ask what changes while the material name stays the same.
Choose one useful goal for the session: separate object and material, describe two textures, or explain a fold and a test. Pointing, drawing or answering in a familiar language can reveal understanding. Add the new language label after the concept becomes clear, and record the support that made the answer possible.
The words have different jobs. Material names answer “made from what?”; soft, hard, smooth and rough describe a sample; bend, fold, tear, cut and join describe actions. Design names planning an intended result, and test names trying a specific question. Use a sentence that connects the jobs: “I fold the paper to make a support, then test whether it stands.”
Compare the selected meaning, not every dictionary sense. Hard here describes a sample under a gentle press; it does not translate the phrase “a hard question”. Tear here is the action of pulling paper apart. Natural translations may use several words, and Hindi or Russian sentence forms can differ from the word-card form.
Mandarin pinyin shows tones. The Hindi and Russian Roman-letter aids are approximate; Russian stress marks show the stressed vowel. Listen to a fluent speaker when available and practise a short meaningful sentence. The written guides help readers compare labels, while spoken language still needs listening and use.
1. material · 材料
English: material
What an object is made from. A spoon is an object; wood or metal can be its material. One object may contain several materials, so its name alone does not tell us every material inside it.
Paper is the material we use for our first model.
Name an object and its material in two separate spaces. Add a second material if the object contains one.
2. paper · 纸
English: paper
A material made into sheets from fibres. Paper can vary in thickness, coating and feel. Here it is the material used for folding, rather than an examination paper or a newspaper as a whole publication.
We fold a sheet of paper to make a small stand.
Compare two clean paper samples. Describe the pieces you have instead of saying all paper feels the same.
3. cardboard · 纸板
English: cardboard
A thick paper-based material used for things such as boxes and models. Some cardboard has layers or a wavy middle. Its behaviour depends on the particular piece, including thickness and structure; not every cardboard sample behaves identically.
A piece of cardboard forms the base of our model.
Look at a cardboard picture or sample. Point to a layer if one is visible.
4. wood · 木材
English: wood
Material from the woody parts of trees and shrubs. A wooden object may have a coating or other materials added. Learn from a familiar finished object or picture; colour alone is not enough to identify wood reliably.
The picture shows a wooden spoon beside a metal spoon.
Find a labelled picture of a wooden object. Explain why colour alone would be weak evidence.
5. metal · 金属
English: metal
A group of materials including iron, aluminium and copper. Metal objects can differ greatly in thickness and flexibility. A metal name does not mean that an object is safe to bend, heat or handle without checking.
We identify the metal spoon in a picture.
Compare pictures of a metal spoon and a wooden spoon: same object type, different materials.
6. plastic · 塑料
English: plastic
A large group of manufactured materials that can be formed into many objects. A thin plastic sheet may bend while a thick plastic object may be rigid. One sample cannot show every property of all plastics.
This plastic lid feels different from the fabric sample.
Compare two labelled plastic objects. State a difference without extending it to every plastic.
7. fabric · 布料
English: fabric
Cloth used for items such as clothing, bags or coverings. Fabrics can be made in different ways and from different fibres. Some feel soft, some rough, and the feel of one piece does not define every fabric.
We describe a fabric sample with the word soft.
Use a clean fabric sample or picture. Give a description and explain which sample you mean.
8. glass ·
English: glass
A material used in objects such as some windows and containers. Ordinary glass can break into sharp pieces. For this lesson, use a picture to learn its name; transparency alone does not prove that an object is glass.
The picture label says that the jar is made of glass.
Use a labelled glass picture. Explain why a clear plastic object could also look transparent.
9. rubber ·
English: rubber
An elastic material used in many objects. Different rubber products have different formulations and can behave differently. We learn the material name from a labelled picture here, rather than assuming every stretchy object is rubber.
The labelled picture shows a rubber tyre.
Find rubber in a labelled picture and say the object name separately.
10. soft ·
English: soft
Easy to press or change shape under a gentle touch in this context. Soft describes how a sample behaves, rather than the name of its material. Here it does not mean a quiet voice or a kind personality.
This clean fabric pad feels soft when gently pressed.
Describe a soft sample under a gentle press, or use an adult’s description of a picture.
11. hard · 硬的
English: hard
Resistant to a gentle press in this everyday comparison. Scientific hardness has more precise tests; here we use a simple descriptive sense. Hard does not mean difficult schoolwork, and a hard sample may still bend if its shape allows it.
The finished wooden block feels hard under a gentle press.
Explain the difference between a hard sample and a hard question in English.
12. smooth ·
English: smooth
Having an even surface with few noticeable bumps in the chosen comparison. Smooth concerns the surface, while soft concerns a different response. A sample can be both hard and smooth; here smooth does not mean oily.
One side of the card feels smooth.
Describe the smoother side of a card. Decide whether it can also be hard.
13. rough ·
English: rough
Having noticeable small bumps or an uneven texture in this context. Rough describes the selected surface, not a person’s manners. Comparing two sides of one sample can reveal different textures without changing its material name.
The other side of this card feels rougher.
Compare both sides of the same card or fabric. Keep its material name while describing a texture difference.
14. bend ·
English: bend
To change something from a straighter shape into a curve or angle. Bending may leave a broad curve without a sharp crease. Whether an object bends depends on its material, shape and thickness as well as the force used.
We bend a paper strip into a broad curve.
Make a broad curve with a paper strip. Point to its shape and describe the action.
15. fold · 折叠
English: fold
To bring one part over another, often forming a crease. Folding is a particular way of changing shape; it does not require removing material. A fold can change how a paper model stands even when the sheet’s material remains paper.
We fold the bottom edge to make a small foot.
Fold paper and point to the crease. Explain whether you removed any material.
16. tear · 撕开
English: tear
To separate material by pulling it apart. A torn edge can be uneven. Here tear is an action, not the drop from an eye; the English noun for that drop has a different pronunciation.
We tear a spare paper strip and describe its edge.
Tear spare paper if appropriate, or draw a torn edge. Compare it with the folded edge.
17. cut · 剪切
English: cut
To separate or shape material with a cutting tool. The action differs from tearing, even if both divide paper. Children can identify the action in a picture; any practical cutting should match the adult’s choice of suitable tools and supervision.
The picture shows an adult cutting a paper rectangle.
Use an action picture to identify cutting and name the tool shown.
18. join · 连接
English: join
To connect two or more parts. Parts may be joined in different ways, including a slot or a small piece of suitable tape. Joining does not always make a permanent connection, so describe the particular method you use.
We join the paper support to the cardboard base with tape.
Show two parts before and after joining. Say how they were connected.
19. design · 设计
English: design
To plan how something will be made or work. Here it is a verb. A useful design includes a purpose and choices about shape or materials; a pretty drawing alone does not tell us whether a model will meet the purpose.
We design a stand that will hold a small paper name card.
Draw a stand and state its job before making it. Include one choice of shape or material.
20. test · 测试
English: test
To try something in a planned way and observe what happens. Here it is an action, not an examination score. State the question and conditions; one successful attempt supports what happened in that attempt, rather than proving a design works in every situation.
We test whether the stand stays upright with the same name card.
Choose a clear test question, keep the card and table the same, and describe what happened.
Read the same design story in a familiar language first. Draw three boxes labelled purpose, change and result. Put the intended job in the first box, the fold in the second, and the observed standing result in the third. Keep the paper’s material name separate from the model’s changing shape.
Use another language version to find the same action and reason. Sentence order can differ while the design idea remains the same. Then ask what the story actually establishes: the second version stood in that trial. A fresh attempt with a different card, surface or support may produce another result, which gives us something new to describe.
English
A Stand for a Name Card. Nia and Arun want a small paper name card to stand on a table. They first look at labelled pictures of objects made from wood, metal, plastic, fabric, glass and rubber. They name each object and material separately. For their own model, they choose paper and a cardboard base supplied by an adult. They notice that one side of the cardboard feels smoother than the other. A clean fabric pad nearby feels soft; the finished wooden block in their picture activity is described as hard. These descriptions refer to particular samples. Nia designs a paper support with a narrow folded foot. Arun joins the foot to the base with a small piece of tape, then rests the name card against the support. They test it on the clear table. The support bends and the card falls. “The material is still paper,” Nia says. “We can change its shape.” They fold a wider foot and make a second crease to strengthen the support’s shape. Keeping the same card and table, they try again. This time the card stays upright during their short observation. They draw the two versions and record the different results. They do not yet know how a heavier card would behave. On a spare paper strip, Arun compares a broad bend with a sharp fold. Nia points to a picture of cutting and draws a torn edge beside it. At the end, they explain their design: paper forms the support, cardboard forms the base, and a fold changes the way the support stands. They choose one new question to test next: will the same design work with a larger paper card?

Use the prompts for discussion. A child can point to a sample picture, arrange action cards or explain aloud. Begin without a model answer, then offer a picture or a short sentence if needed. Note which answers required help so that progress remains visible and specific.
A useful explanation links a description to an observation. “This side is rougher because I notice more small bumps” gives more information than “because it is cardboard”. Ask which sample, which side and which action were involved. Accept a careful account of a different result in the child’s own model.
1. Is spoon an object name or a material name?
2. Can one object contain more than one material?
3. Does a fold turn paper into plastic?
4. Can a sample be hard and smooth at the same time?
5. Does one flexible plastic sample prove all plastics are flexible?
6. What is the difference between folding and tearing paper?
7. What job did the children design the stand to do?
8. What stayed the same for the second test?
9. What did they observe in the second trial?
10. What can they ask next?
Answer guide
- An object name. Wood and metal are possible materials for a spoon.
- Yes. The model includes paper, cardboard and the tape used to join parts.
- No. In this task the shape changes and the material remains paper.
- Yes. These describe different aspects: response to gentle pressure and the surface texture.
- No. Describe the particular sample, its shape and thickness.
- Folding brings parts over one another, often with a crease; tearing separates material by pulling.
- Hold a small paper name card upright on the table.
- The card and table. They changed the folded support’s shape.
- The card stayed upright during their short observation. That result applies to the described trial.
- Whether the same design works with a larger paper card. They need another test to find out.
This seven-day route is a flexible example. A row may be repeated across several short sessions. Reuse familiar words before adding new ones and choose a picture route whenever practical making is inconvenient. A useful explanation with three words is a good next step even if the full set is still unfamiliar.
| Day | Words | Activity | What to notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | material · paper · cardboard · wood · metal | Separate object names and materials using labelled pictures. | Can answer both what it is and what it is made from. |
| 2 | plastic · fabric · glass · rubber | Match labelled objects to materials; discuss more than one material per object. | Uses labels and context as evidence. |
| 3 | soft · hard · smooth · rough | Compare selected samples or pictures. | Distinguishes surface texture from response to pressure. |
| 4 | bend · fold | Describe a curve and a crease in paper. | Explains a shape change while keeping the material name. |
| 5 | tear · cut · join | Use action pictures and two paper parts. | Explains whether parts separate or connect. |
| 6 | design · test | Draw a stand, choose a purpose and discuss the result of a trial. | Separates intention, change and observation. |
| 7 | review · new use | Describe a bag picture or another paper model. | Uses the meaning beyond the original story. |
For support, use one object picture, one material word and one action word. An adult can read the card while the child points or draws. For a child who prefers not to touch a texture, use a clear photograph and an adult’s description. The language goal can be reached through several response methods.
For a stretch task, compare two paper models made from equal-sized pieces of the same sheet. Change the fold and keep the card and table the same. Ask what changed, what stayed the same and what you observed. Changing several things at once makes it harder to connect a result to one particular change.
Describe the model rather than judging the maker. “This version fell when we added the card” gives a clear repair point. A child can suggest a wider foot, another fold or a different arrangement, then choose one idea to try. A result that differs from the plan provides information for the next design.
Check the words in a new situation, such as a picture of a bag or a simple paper bookmark. Ask for the object, a material, a relevant property and an action. A bag may combine fabric, metal and plastic, so several well-supported answers can be appropriate. Ask what evidence identifies the materials.
Look for clearer distinctions and explanations: object versus material, texture versus softness, fold versus tear, and intention versus observation. Record whether the child used a word independently, with a picture or after a model. One successful session is a useful start; revisit the meaning in another task before calling it secure.
Must children handle all eight material types?
No. Labelled pictures support the whole language lesson. Use paper and familiar adult-selected samples for optional making; glass is taught through pictures here.
Do all four languages need to be new?
No. Use one familiar language to make the idea clear, then compare another. Returning to a familiar language can help explain a difficult relationship.
Why can the same material feel different?
Thickness, surface treatment, structure and the specific product can differ. Describe the sample in front of you and name the feature you observed.
Are smooth and soft opposites?
No. Smooth and rough compare surface texture; soft and hard compare another aspect in this lesson. A hard sample may also be smooth.
Does one successful trial prove the design always works?
It shows the observed result under those conditions. Change the card or the surface and test the new question. Explain the conditions along with the result.
How can we compare fairly?
Choose one intended change, keep other relevant conditions similar and state what you observed. For the paper task, keep the same card and table while comparing a changed fold.
Can a child answer through drawing?
Yes. A drawing can show a fold, an object or a material label. Ask for a short explanation in a familiar language, then offer the new word when useful.
Where should we go next?
Use the shapes lesson to describe the design, and the time-and-planning lesson to explain its sequence. Return to one material, one property and one action in a fresh situation.
