January 2027 school calendar for Singapore families. The first week of school, O-Level results, the start of the first SEC year and a clear plan for Term I.
January sets the tone for the year.
New classes, new teachers and new subjects arrive at once. Some students settle in a week. Others take a term.
The difference is often routine, not ability.
This guide is useful for families who need to:
- prepare a child for Primary 1 or Secondary 1;
- support a student through O-Level results and post-secondary choices;
- understand what the new SEC means for Secondary 4; or
- set a steady weekly routine for Term I.
At eduKateSG, we pay close attention to the first weeks of the year. Small problems are easiest to fix before they grow.

The First Weeks of School
Primary 1
Everything is new: the bell, the canteen, the classroom rules.
- arrive on time and keep mornings calm;
- check the bag and homework diary together each evening;
- ask about friends and recess, not only lessons; and
- read together for a few minutes every night.
Primary 1 and Primary 2 pupils have no weighted assessments or examinations. These years are for building habits and confidence.
Secondary 1
A new school, longer days and more subjects.
In Mathematics, algebra usually arrives early. In English, writing becomes longer and more structured.
- help the student plan the week, not just the day;
- watch for homework that takes far too long; and
- ask which subject feels hardest by week three.
See Secondary 1 Mathematics Tuition for what the first term usually covers.
O-Level Results and Next Steps
The 2026 GCE O-Level results are tentatively due between Wednesday 13 and Friday 15 January.
Applications for junior colleges, Millennia Institute, polytechnics and ITE usually follow quickly through the Joint Admissions Exercise. Schools brief students on the dates.
On results day
- read the results together, calmly;
- check the aggregate against the courses and schools being considered;
- talk about interests, not only cut-off points; and
- keep a back-up choice ready.
JC Year 1 and Millennia Institute Year 1 students begin Term I on Wednesday 3 February.
2027: The First SEC Year
Students who started Secondary 1 in 2024 under Full Subject-Based Banding are now in Secondary 4. They are the first cohort to sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) examinations.
What changes
- subjects are examined at G1, G2 or G3, with the same format and standards as the N(T)-, N(A)- and O-Level papers respectively;
- English and Mother Tongue written papers are held in September;
- Mother Tongue has one written sitting, with no mid-year paper;
- written papers for other subjects run from October to November;
- oral, listening and practical components are held before the written papers; and
- there is one common results release in January 2028.
What it means in practice
English must be ready a month earlier than other subjects.
Revision cannot wait for the September holidays. It must be planned from January.
For a full English plan, read SEC English Language G3 2027: The Complete Secondary 4 Examination Training System.
What Term I Usually Brings
Schools set their own assessment schedules. Ask for the term’s plan early.
Primary 3 to Primary 5
Weighted assessments are spread across the year. Science begins in Primary 3, so Primary 3 families should watch how the new subject is landing.
Primary 6
PSLE year. Orals usually come in August, with written papers in late September. Term I is for strong foundations, not panic.
Secondary 1 to Secondary 3
Since 2023, there are no mid-year examinations at any primary or secondary level. Weighted assessments carry more of the year’s result, so each one matters.
Secondary 4
SEC year. Every term counts.
A Simple Plan for January
Week 1: Set the routine
Fix bedtime, homework time and screen time. Keep them the same every school day.
Week 2: Get the assessment plan
Find out when the first weighted assessments are and what they cover.
Weeks 3 and 4: Watch for early warning signs
- homework that takes much longer than it should;
- a subject the child avoids talking about;
- unusual tiredness or irritability; or
- marks on early worksheets that keep falling.
Early signs are easier to act on than late results.
How eduKateSG Helps in January
January is a good month to start lessons. The syllabus is just beginning, so students can learn alongside school rather than chase it.
In the first weeks, we:
- check foundations from the previous level;
- align lessons with the school’s topic order; and
- set clear targets for the first weighted assessments.

Useful materials include:
- recent test papers and weighted assessments;
- the latest report book;
- marked homework;
- the school’s assessment schedule; and
- examples of questions the student finds difficult.
We are not only looking at the score.
We are looking for patterns.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does school start in 2027?
The school year begins on Monday 4 January 2027. Primary 1 starts that day, and Primary 2 to 6 start on Tuesday 5 January. Secondary schools confirm their own first-day arrangements.
When are the 2026 O-Level results released?
They are tentatively due between Wednesday 13 and Friday 15 January 2027.
What is the SEC?

No. Mid-year examinations were removed at all primary and secondary levels from 2023. Schools use weighted assessments across the year instead.
Do Primary 1 and Primary 2 pupils have exams?

Is January a good time to start tuition?
Yes, especially for students entering a demanding new level. Starting early lets lessons run alongside school instead of chasing it.

January 2027: Start Steady
The first month does not decide the year.
But it shapes it.
A clear routine saves energy.
An early assessment plan removes surprises.
A problem noticed in week three is a small problem.
The same problem noticed in May is a large one.
Start steady, and the year has room to grow.
